Hi,

I'm trying to help a friend recover data on a WD sharepace NAS. It's configured as RAID 0 and an hard reset was done on it (which set to factory defaults and apparently wiped the drives). Is there any way to recover this? I know the data is still there on the drives but how do I get it?

I've recovered single HDDs before but never recovered a RAID set. I'm also hoping that setting the drives back up will just restore it to it's previous state (data and all) but this is possibly cluthing at straws.

Cheers,

Tim

Did some detective work. The MBR record on my disk only varies from the SDA_MBR files provided on the Backup Images page by a couple of bytes, both changed from the same value to another value. So it doesn't look like my MBR has been corrupted.

Has anyone seen similar behaviour and have a solution for what I'm seeing. Since I've had to rebuild everything from scratch once already this year, I'm loathe to try re-imaging the partitions and starting again.

To summarise, the box powers up, responds to ping requests, but nothing else seems to be working.

Thanks.

I dont know exactly what to do, but my first idea is do put both in your pc, run linux and try to assamble the partitions via mdadm (http://linuxwiki.de/mdadm). theres also a command which check, which partitions belong together if you dont know it, but i cant remember. After that i think linux will mount the partitions an you can access them.so try to search about that.

Hello All,

I had a 1TB MyBook that failed to power up. After reading all the great HowTo's, I decided to use Ubuntu to do a recovery of the data on the two hard drives.

I installed Ubuntu on a spare hard drive that I had, plugged both of the MyBook hard drives into my desktop motherboard, and powered-up.

After loading the mdadm package into Ubuntu and after rebooting, Ubuntu showed the two drives and all the RAID partition information. I did all of this using the package manager in the GUI.

Ubuntu showed a 992GB Linear Array (/dev/md4) and I sucessfully mounted the drve. Opening the drive the following folders were listed…

lost+found
DATA <— I created this folder using the MyBook interface before it failed
GHOSTIMAGES <— I created this folder using the MyBook interface before it failed
PUBLIC

However, when trying to open DATA folder , Ubuntu reports that "You do not have the permissions necessary to view the contents"

I'm not a familar with Ubuntu and I thinking all I need to do is change the permissions on the folder. I look at the DATA folder properties to change permissions but Ubuntu will not let me change them.

Any help on changing permissions on the folder???

John

Almost a year to the day since my previous MBWE died, the replacement has gone the same way. It's a 500Gb blue-light.

The disk powers on, the lights are up but it doesn't respond to any services which means ssh, samba and http are all gone, so I can't run the firmware hacks. The box does respond to ping requests however.

I have managed to remove the disks and mount them to linux and the partition contents look OK, so I'm working on the assumption that the MBR might be corrupt; that the ping response is being provided by the network controller before the disk needs to boot?

Question: should it be possible to just copy the MBR image provided in the Backup Images page into first 512 bytes of the disk? Without damaging the rest of the disk contents?

Alternatively, any other theories on what might cause this behaviour?

Thank in advance

I have a MBWE 1TB blue ring mybook that won't boot. Likely some kind of corruption. Anyhow, with the above driver I can see the folders on the hard drive just fine (now in a USB enclosure for the time being). I would like to get at my files so that I can copy them off the mybook drive but am not having any luck finding them. Where are they stored and how can I copy them to my Vista machine? I also have a knoppix live cd that makes the hard drive accessible but same problem…can't find my files. Clue please? Thanks.
