I'm asking because, I'm afraid that directory structure changed too far to use this solution. Many directories are different than these attached in backup file. I'm afraid to brick my MBWE by using this backup.

Anyone tried this solution on 01.00.28 with MioNet 2.4.0.62?

Thanks for any info.

Hello I have hacked my WD MyBook and enabled SSH. I connect using PuTTY and everything works fine, but I can't see greek filenames inside /shares/internals/PUBLIC, where I have copied my personal files. The ls command displays only latin characters and ?s instead of greek characters. I tried setting in PuTTY font to Greek and translation to UTF-8, ISO-8859-7 or Windows1253 which are the codepages for Greek but nothing. Is there something I must set in a config file in order to see non-latin characters in console window?

I just wanted to post up here that if anyone has a wii, you can use it and this device to make a great media power house! With the combination of the two, you can:

Watch Videos that are stored on your WD on your TV Via the Wii

Listen to your music files

If you use a emulator on the wii that supports a smb network connection, then you can load your games and save directly to your drive and not have to take up space on the wii.

I mean wow, not bad for a lil wii and a nas, heck the colors even match !!!

What all are you doing with your NAS?

I recently purchased a used WD MyBook World II 1TB (2x500GB) Box on eBay. I have an identical one that is full and needed another for more storage space. Shortly after it arrived I tried to boot without any success, and an examination led me to the discover that the box was bricked. I had unwittingly been ripped off by a savvy eBay seller looking to dump a junk box and save a few bucks in the process. It was going to be a major pain to get this guy to take a return and refund my cash, so I set to work on the other options.

The box I already have is running 'raid-1' mode, and I got the idea that it might be possible to swap one of the good raid volumes into the bricked box, boot it, and resynchronize the bad drive. This is what I did, and it worked perfectly. The only drawback is that it takes about five hours to resync a 500GB volume, but that's better than trashing the entire box. Right?

After the resync completed, I deleted the old, duplicate files from the new box, and started adding new. The best thing about this is I don't need to rework the new box with all the modifications from the first. I just changed the IP address, and everything is identical to the first box.

So, this might work for you too, or as a safety precaution, resync a spare drive as a backup. In the event that your box gets bricked for software reasons, slide the spare, backup drive in, boot, resync the bad drives, and you're ready for another round of experimentation. You'll need a compatible drive or a second, identical box, and the boxes must run in 'raid-1' mode.

Let me know if anyone else has any success with this.

Thanks so much, I would never have discovered AWS or made it through the setup without this guide! My first sync is currently running.

Steps where I hit snags:

Create an AWS Volume

ssh complained about the lax permissions on my identity file, so I had to:

$ chmod 600 id_rsa-gsg-keypair

The ami-1a5db973 AMI works for me in the US, but I had to add SSH to my default security group before I could connect to it. In the Management Console, click Security Groups on the left, select default, and add the SSH connection method as a custom rule.

The volume needed to be formatted. I'd recommend just following the help for Volumes to accomplish this.

Create a script…

I replaced /home/gordon in one instance of a path to the id_rsa-gsg-keypair file. The others used a ~, which didn't work in the script, maybe because of my shell configuration. I just made them all /home/<me>/.ec2/id_rsa-gsg-keypair.

It takes about a seven tries to get console output. I thought maybe it wasn't working, but I was just impatient.

I'm not sure if the aws detach-volume command is working. I get output like:

+-----------------------+--------------------------------------------------------------------------+ | Code | Message | +-----------------------+--------------------------------------------------------------------------+ | InvalidParameterValue | Value (i-7dec8015) for parameter volume is invalid. Expected: 'vol-...'. | +-----------------------+--------------------------------------------------------------------------+

Does it matter?

That's all. It helped to be familiar with Linux and shell scripting to fix the snags. I've never used rsync before though, or AWS, and I wouldn't have gotten through it without the guide!

I know this not a really good topic. Since it will give a chance for those hackers or those who might have stolen someone's WB and try to make it their own by getting into SSH.

Well, this is intended for those who are honest and really messed up their password like myself. I decided to give my defacto password a change to a super long alorgith pass from GRC. You can obtain you very own personal password from them through here https://www.grc.com/passwords.htm.

So I logged into root as usual and change my password and did a copy and paste off the website.

I did it real fast but made a huge mistake to actually make a file to store the password first. This way you can make sure you are copying the right password. Save the file and now open the file and copy the password and now change the password.

Exit SSH and relog in to root with new password.

Well, I thought I got that the first time (of course without store the password first).
So I input the password and got the "access is denied"

I tried everything I can and can't seem to get in. Wasted 3 hours of research and finally found a way to get in.

To get back into root after a failed password:
1. Make sure you have a user made in WB interface. Meaning at http://<mybook ip>. This should bring up the wb webinterace. Make sure you know the password for admin on this. If not, I guess you can reset it by using a paperclip in the back of the mybook and log in with default admin / 123456. I don't know if this will wipe out all the user info, haven't confirm. If so, just create a new one. Make sure this user have admin status.

2. log in SSH (in my case, I use putty)

3. Use the user and password that is created in the WB interface.

4. You should be able to log in that looks something like this
[<myuser>@<mybook> / ]

5. now type:
su -

6. You should be in root now and looks something like this.
[root@<mybook> ~ ] <--— Looks fimilar eh?

7. now type:
passwd
change to new password, make sure you have this password update to your file or use the GRC password.

Bottom line:
If it is true to what I type above, then you stolen mybook is doomed for any hackers or thiefs. You can get into ssh with root no matter what.

Bright side is, you don't have to really worry about forgetting your password (honest mistake). There is always a life line to get you back into your mybook property to do more hacking. =P

So with this knowledge, I don't know if it's a good thing or bad. But I guess it depends who is using the info perhaps.
