Hi,

I bought a white WD MyBook World Ed and I have followed all the instructions to make FTP work but no success till now

1. I have enabled the service in my WD using the default port
2. I have open the 21 port to my router (Draytek Vigor 2700) pointing to my WD ip
3. I have opened the 5000-5099 ports to my router pointing to my WD ip
4. I have made the 21 port redirection pointing to my WD ip

Although I can access my WD from outside using the 8080 port, I can't connect through ftp using Fileziila client because I get the following message:

Status: Connection attempt failed with "ECONNREFUSED - Connection refused by server".
Error: Could not connect to server

Any ideas??

P.S. Using the same steps in another WD but with different router everything were fine..!

Thanks in advance

Dimos

Hi all

I know this is problem is already discussed many times but I just can figure out the right solution. If I work with public folder (access to all), then I can map the network drive without any problems. But when I set in web interface of my mybook some access rights to a folder, then I have to enter user and pw to map the network drive. The problem is, that no pw and username seems to work so I can't map the network drive…
The rights etc. must be correct because I can access the folder over sftp. So someone knows what I have to do that I can map a network drive in the windows explorer when a network folder has restriced access?

btw I'm using windows 7 and windows xp

thx for any help

What needs to be done to have iptables working on MBWE ? After installing the iptables, libnetfilter-queue and libnfnetlink packages via ipkg, I still get the following error :

iptables v1.2.11: can't initialize iptables table ‘filter’: iptables who? (do you need to insmod?)
Perhaps iptables or your kernel needs to be upgraded.

netfilter (packet filtering at kernel level), on which iptables (Linux firewall to manage packet filter rulesets), needs to be setup to have moblock operational.
insmod is available in the package module-init-tools, but how to get the needed kernel modules for iptables ? Is their no other choice than altering the Linux kernel ? I understood that cross compiling1 the Linux kernel with external modules could provide new features. Some of you reported here to have successfully installed moblock but I haven't find any working instructions. I found someone who has probably done some progress with iptables2 integration to the MBWE but I didn't manage to contact him so far…
In addition to moblock, I would like to be able to run the arno-iptables-firewall script.

If you could share some thoughts about the topic, we may finally propose a clear solution for everyone to apply.

Cheers !

Footnotes

1.
I need help getting NFS access to my 1GB world Edition II. Mainly I need it for my HTPC (Linux based XBMC) but as it doesn't work there, and I am a linux noob I thought I'd try it on my windows pc first.

I haven't hacked my MBWE, and it has NFS support, but I just can't get it to work. Hope someone is willing to help.

In the NAS I enabled NFS on my share called private.
The NAS IP is 192.168.1.30
In NAS settings all ip addresses are allowed, but I also added the ip for my linux and windows machine seperately

On my windows 7 machine I installed nfs support. I also checked out this site with details on mounting
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc754350.aspx

I ran this command:
mount \\192.168.1.30\private j:
and I get
Network Error - 53

Type 'NET HELPMSG 53' for more information.

When I type that I get: the network path was not found. kind of clueless what to do next. I also substituted the ipadress for the name (NAS) but that doesnt help

Hello guys!

I was absolutely amazed by the great hacks described on the wiki! Everything works really well on my My Book (blue rings). After setting up Optware I started using Samba from its repository and implemented all settings I also use on my Debian system. No pain, it all worked immediately!

Sadly however, sometimes Windows XP clients seem to 'forget' their login credentials of the mapped network drives during the day, causing much distress at my office! Using Windows GUI nor command line tool net use (with or without persistent) makes Windows behave correctly. All clients need to reconnect to their network drives to regain access to the Samba shares. But in time the connection fails again…

Do you have any suggestions that may help me?

Thank you in advance!

Simon

smb.conf:

[global] workgroup = WORKGROUP server string = Samba server interfaces = 192.168.178.25/24 127.0.0.1/8 security = share guest account = nobody encrypt passwords = yes guest only = no config file = /opt/etc/samba/smb.conf smb passwd file = /opt/etc/samba/smbpasswd veto files = /.senvidData*/lost+found*/ log file = /opt/var/log/samba/log.all syslog = 0 max log size = 1000 [Admin] case sensitive = no strict locking = no path = /shares/internal/admin valid users = admin read only = no guest ok = yes [Projects] case sensitive = no strict locking = no path = /shares/internal/projects valid users = projects nobody read only = no guest ok = yes

Hello,
I recently bought my MBWE II and I am very happy with it :)

But I am facing one problem with the vsftpd configuration and after many hours of testing, searching and scratching my head, I am stuck.

I configured that local users has access to jailed folder and all works fine, but I would like to restrict the access to SSH for them.

I tried this:
1. Edit the /etc/passwd and change /bin/sh to /bin/false or /bin/true or /sbin/nologin. This block the SSH and FTP access, so it doesn't do the trick.
2. Edit the /etc/ssh_config to use the AllowUser, DenyUser, ..Group.. and etc, but none of them worked as expected, later I saw that this version of openBSD / openSsh doesn't support those.

Do you have any other suggestions that may help me define users that are allowed to login to the FTP, but not SSH?

Thank you in advance,

Best regards,

Hey guys!
I've got the following problem: I want to create NFS exports for my USB drive(s) connected to my MBWE to make them accessable for my WDTV1. Samba is just too slow for that purpose. As you sincerely know, it's no problem to create NFS exports for the internal drive. The playback of files directly on MBWE goes flawlessly.
But as you might know, MBWE doesn't create NFS exports for USB drives. So I tried to create them myself through SSH. This went sort of fine until I tried to mount the drive on another computer or on my WDTV.
I edited /etc/exports and added this line:

/nfs/usb1-1.1share1 *(rw,all_squash,sync,insecure,anonuid=65534,anongid=65534)

After exporting (exportfs -r) exportfs -v shows the USB drive:

/shares/usb1-1.1share1 <world>(rw,wdelay,insecure,root_squash,all_squash,anonuid=65534,anongid=65534)

The share is listed under /nfs/usb1-1.1share1, too.
But there is absolutely no chance to mount the volume on another machine.
E.g. in Mac OS the finder command should be "nfs://mybookworld/nfs/usb1-1.1share1". The same command works for my other shares listed in exportfs.
Why not for the USB drive? Do you guys know any possibility to make MBWE share USB drives via NFS?
Thank you in advance.

Hi,

Something strange happened after I installed openvpn.
I installed it using the guide (http://mybookworld.wikidot.com/openvpn), no errors whatsoever…

After installation openvpn wouldnt start using the S20 startup script in, but found a solution (here: http://mybookworld.wikidot.com/forum/t-124364/openvpn-issue). Thereafter openvpn started as it should a was listening to port 1194.

I logged out, rebooted and logged in again using ssh so see everything was working.
I did all of the above from an external access to my ssh

WHen I came home, i coudnt access my mybookworld drive anymore in windows and it wasnt allowing me to access SSH, just got time out errors.
Switching the mybook on and off didnt solve it. However occasionally I managed to get into SSH, but only using my external ip but was kicked out of SSH within a minute with an error saying "software kicked me out or something". Thereafter i wasnt able to connect again. I managed to get in again today. I can't get into it using VPN because I did not copy the private keys to my desktop…

Well I suspect I made an error in the openVPN config using:
ip 192.168.0.0 as my FamilyNetworkIPaddress wich should be 192.168.1.0
ip 192.168.0.100 as InternalMybookIPAddress wich should be 192.168.1.100

COuld this misconfig be the reason for my troubles? What should I do when I manage to get in again (for a minute or so)?
Thanks for your advice, highly appreciate it!!

Ciao

I hope someone can help me:

I am using a MBWE (blue rings) for quite a while, works fine!
I just moved, and got another setup. ADSL-wireless modem connects wireless with a bridge that connects to the MBWE.
I can find the MBWE on my laptop (for configuration and stuff), but I can't access the files on the MBWE? (Mionet says it's offline)

ADSL modem (192.168.1.1) connects wireless with Bridge/Router (192.168.1.2). I want the MBWE behind the router (192.168.1.2) so I can stream stuff (works great) to my conceptronic grab'n'go (also behind 192.168.1.2). My Desktop and laptop computer are wirelessly connected to the modem (192.168.1.1), but cannot acces the files on the MBWE (but can access the configuration and stuff on the MBWE).
When I move the MBWE to the modem (192.168.1.1) everything works, but the streaming to the conceptronic (behind 192.168.1.2) is really laggy (so I don't want that ;).

What adjustments should I make?

I have the blue rings 500GB drive. I've used it problematically for about a year and a half now. Since a few days ago, I have been totally unable to connect to the files on the drive. I have it set up with all the files under \\externaldrive\PUBLIC, and using windows' Map Network Drive to access it as Z: .

The error I get after using Vista's diagnose is this:

"externaldrive" is not set up to establish a connection on port "File and Printer Sharing (SMB)" with this computer.

I've looked in the web interface at the settings, which reports the drive status to be OK . (It's very slow, taking a minute or two per page to load). I checked the permissions setting, and it' set to Full Access. I try changing it to Read Only, to at least back the data up, and I get

Error Code:: f00013 Failed to write shares.inc Please try again

Anyone any ideas? Someone unfamiliar with this specific drive, said to see about removing the actual drive from the NAS box. Is this possible? If so, how? Could I put it in desktop and read it with Vista or Ubuntu, or would I need anything special?

I hope someone can help, as my entire music library and years of photos are stored on this drive which _was_ my backup, and some of them are not stored anywhere else (and even those that are, recollecting all the files would b a PITA)

I just got a MBWE WL a couple of days ago, and it works great. The only problem I have encountered is that when I start MBWE WL it gets listed in my Finder panel and I can mount the shares and all is great. But after a while (5-15 minutes) the drive disappears from the list, but I can still open the mounted shares from aliases I made on the desktop. WD Backup's also able to back up to one of the mounted shares with no problem (I hope). When I open "Network" in Finder I see the mounted share which I'm able to open and use, and I also see the MBWE, but I'm unable to log in. What could be the problem?

I'm running Transmission on the drive, but this also happens when Transmission's inactive.

OS: Mac OS X 10.5.8
MBWE WL FW: newest
Transmission: newest from optware
