I have joined the WikiDot site specifically to reply to this post.

After spending almost two full days trying to fix the "Warning: is_dir(): Stat failed for /DataVolume/_torrent_ (errno=5 - Input/output error) in /proto/SxM_webui/ctcs/ctcsconfig.inc on line 24 " problem with no success I was ready to get the HDD out of the enclosure and go "Linux" way as suggested by jimboh when I suddenly read this post.
I gave it a try and it worked for me!
I have almost talked myself into buying DiskInternals Raid Recovery for $250 if nothing else would have worked.
So glad Zeppe found the time to share his experience!

With many, MANY thanks!
GYakushkin

Same Problem, was before I took a look in Log's. /admin/status_log_system.php?lang=en

So I found this folders not existing and created them via network. Problem solved.

Same thing appeared on other device when Public folder had too many files in it, so keep it clean. I transfered files to different folder, stoped publiс access and problem solved again.

Good luck.

Ok,
Thanks to 7aboir and netvizier my solution was as follows.
My WD book 1tb had a Warning: is_dir(): Stat failed for /DataVolume/_torrent_ (errno=5 - Input/output error) failure
I removed the drive from the Nas and installed into the PC
Using Linux Mint I detected the drive but was unable to mount
On inspection the drive is partitioned into sdc1/sdc2/sdc3/sdc4

sdc1 had bad primary superblocks
as did sdc2 and sdc3 so the drive was unable to mount

using :
sudo xfs_repair -L /dev/sdc4

followed by:

$ sudo mknod /dev/md4 b 9 4
$ sudo apt-get install mdadm
$ sudo mdadm —assemble /dev/md4 /dev/sdc4
$ sudo mkdir /media/xyz
$ sudo mount /dev/md4 /media/xyz

I was able to retrive all data by browsing to /media/xyz.

dammit, happened again…must be some corrupt data somewhere :S

Wonder why the heck it's doing it. Sends the file system read-only for a start, the DataVolume mount disappears, device doesn't restart or shut down properly with reboot or poweroff…frustrated now :S

Tried the xfs_repair (see post below) and it has made no difference, as has me doing exactly what I did in the first of my posts…

Hi all,

I have 2TB White Light MBWE, not sure if it's relevent but I ungraded the firmware about 4 days to whatever the latest was.

Today, I got afflicted with the original error message that shadowhead reported way back in 2010 (but not his mount issues) and after trawling through whatever google chucked at me I think I've had a bit of success in at least getting my shares accessable.

1: Fortunately I had SSH enabled
2: It seemed to only kick in after about 20m from a restart
3: although I don't it was essential, I installed the feature pack - it did point me in the direction i took, however, which was startup scripts
4: At first I ssh'd on and at first just renamed ctcsconfig.inc to .old (/proto/SxM_webui/ctcs/), restarted, but this screwed the webui and although seemded to allow access to the shares, that dropped out after 20 min or so, so I renamed it back
5: I looked at the startup scripts and one of them stood out - S99sxminit in /etc/init.d - took a wild guess and moved that out, restarted and this seems to have addressed the shares not being accessable issue for me, but the WebUI still not up - instead of getting errors not found, it's in a logo'd 'starting services' loop that never gets beyond 10% before going back to 0%.

The most import thing is that I have access to my data….not too fussed about the rest but I am going to try and see if i can get both working, anyway…i'll post a follow-up if i get any success with that

I yanked it, put it in a new USB 3 enclosure, plugged it into Linux and voila. I see everything. Piece of junk WD. Got an ASUS router with USB 3 ports on the back…Going to plug it in there next after I grab my data. Done and done. Absolutely nothing wrong with the drive - just the dumb controller/software. Again, I honestly believe these drives to get messed up because they crammed all this software on there without fully understanding how it works. Without testing. I MAY use the drive for another server of the sorts and reinstall everything myself, but who knows maybe it is also junk hardware…Don't know if I can trust it.

Was working for a little while then stopped. I keep resetting it and it eventually mounts….But for how long is the question? It's running into something that throws it off. WD really put too much junk on these drives in my opinion. There's a jumble of various programs that I just am not sure jive so well together and/or they really didn't spend a lot of time configuring and testing. All I wanted was a simple NAS…Not some DNLA server / iTunes server / Torrent whatever the hell it does with torrents / FTP / SMB / AFP / whatever… SMB, AFP, sure. SSH yes. FTP ok whatever. But all that other junk? Not really that important. If I can just get the thing to work as a simple NAS then I'll use my little Acer Aspire with XMBC to share media off it. End of story. Going to the store to pick up a controller for this thing and see if I can first get all my data to a safe location then I'll try a factory reset I guess…. I don't know. I'm not too hopeful. This thing is supposed to be backup. Something you can rely on. With all the junk and screw ups they made, they totally missed the entire point of a NAS backup. For some stupid frills. What a shame.

Anyone have any kinda insight here? I tried repairing etc. It seems like a factory reset (maybe) was the only thing anyone has done that had any kind of success. My only concern about that is how long until it breaks again?

Restarting it enough times worked. Not sure if I was able to get into the admin because the _torrent_ didn't mount yet or if it just worked. Got SSH enabled THANK GOD. I got in and I can see /DataVolume/_torrent_ which is empty… Which is fine… I'd honestly just rather not have it even try to mount that. What do I need that for? For now it's working…I don't know. It was weird and if it's going to be hit or miss like this, I'd rather just disable that mount.

same issue… i updated firmware and got this. i SHOULD have enabled SSH! I'm so annoyed that I didn't. It just looks like a programming error in their PHP. Retarded people at WD couldn't build an admin tool with an if() in there that would just allow you to still get to the admin if there was an issue like this?? COME ON… Even if you logged in and there was a restricted set of features because something failed to mount, whatever…But not being able to log in and do anything at all? Such crap. I don't even use the torrent thing.

Any solutions?? I can't wipe the data. I need it.

My drive capacity almost full 95% left 148GB only.
This question to ask with you all, is this because of the torrent or is not?
Physical disk it self is it good or defective as well?
If I'm using USB 3TB WDC essential and connect to MyBook World 2TB on back would I be able to transfer to external USB?

I gave up and tore the drive out of the enclosure. I was able to access the fourth partition, containing my data, by booting from a knoppix 6.4.4 disc and running the following commands:

sudo su
mdadm —assemble /dev/md10 /dev/sdb4 —run
mount /dev/md10 /mnt

At this point, all my data were accessible in the /mnt directory. After confirming that all my data were accessible again, I attached another external drive (formatted FAT, thank you very much) and rebooted. This new external drive became /dev/sdb and my salvaged MBWE drive became /dev/sdc.

I was able to copy all my data to the new external, FAT drive with the following commands:

sudo su
mdadm —assemble /dev/md10 /dev/sdc4 —run
mount /dev/md10 /mnt
mount /dev/sdb1 /tmp
cp -L -R -v /mnt /tmp

(It was a little more complicated than this because I had to use two different external FAT drives to receive all the rescued data, but the last two lines show the essence of the copying operations.)

What's with the stupid voice/screen reader in knoppix?

I was able to use smb://MBW in the Connect to Server dialog to see all my sharepoints, open the Configuration folder, double-click on index.html, and then use the gui interface to reset the admin pw to admin and to enable ssh access. However, this is the only way I can get into the drive. I still cannot use the gui web page to log into the drive. All my sharepoints are visible, but the only one that I can open, and for which I can see contents, is Configuration. All the other sharepoints give a "connection failed" error message when I try to mount them. All the other sharepoints give me an error message in the form "The operation can’t be completed because the original item for [e.g.] 'Chess' can’t be found" when I try to open them as folders in the OS X Finder. I can see them all, but I cannot open any except Configuration.

As noted, I enabled ssh access. This is what I see:

$ ssh 10.0.1.16
61.1.0.01|toor#61.1.0.01|toor's password:

~ # ls
~ # cd /
/ # ls
ls: ./DataVolume: Input/output error
CacheVolume etc nfs sbin twonky
Configuration lib opt shares usr
ExtendVolume linuxrc proc sys var
bin lost+found proto tmp
dev mnt root trustees
/ # cd DataVolume
/DataVolume # ls
ls: .: Input/output error
/DataVolume #

What now? Where is my data and how do I copy it to another drive?

I just encountered this problem after using this drive for a long time under OS 10.6 and Win Vista. In short, when I try to connect to the drive as admin via the Finder in OS X, i get a "connection failed" error message. Same problems when I connect the drive directly to the ethernet port on my second Mac, a MacBook. When I boot the MacBook via BootCamp to Win Vista, the WD Discovery program sees the drive and lists the two drive letter maps to sharepoints on the drive. However, when I click on those sharepoints or try to do anything with them, I get error messages to the effect (I forgot to write down the exact messages) that the names cannot be found.

The IP address of the drive is 10.0.1.16

I cannot ssh into the drive, using "ssh 10.0.1.16" under OS X. I receive the error message "… port 22: Connection refused" when I try. I believe this is because I never set up ssh access before the drive became inaccessible. This is what a port scan shows:

Port Scanning host: 10.0.1.16

Open TCP Port: 80 http
Open TCP Port: 111 sunrpc
Open TCP Port: 139 netbios-ssn
Open TCP Port: 445 microsoft-ds
Open TCP Port: 548 afpovertcp
Open TCP Port: 55222
Port Scan has completed…

This is what arp -a shows:

~ $ arp -a
? I have tried admin/admin, admin/123456, and admin with the drive pw that I set months ago; nothing works.

I have tried using the reset button on the back of the drive, both when the drive is running, and when I power the drive on (holding it for 40+ seconds). This makes no difference. admin/admin, admin/123456, and admin/mypw still do not work.

No response yet from WD tech support. (Based on what I have read here, I do not expect much from WD tech support, unless they have actually worked on the problem in the last year or so.) Has anyone found a solution that can be implemented under OS X (or by booting my MacBook to Win Vista) in light of my apparent inability to use ssh and my clear inability to log in using the gui web page? I would prefer not to take the drive out of the case, for warranty reasons. (Although I suppose I should figure out whether I am still within the warranty period.) I don't have Linux anywhere.

Thank you for sharing JohnG2.
Did the problem come back after a full factory reset? WD support couldn't tell me.
I'm thinking in dismantling it and using the drives with a Synology DiskStation…

This last weekend I had this same problem, after trying a few things including /proto/SxM_webui/ctcs/ctcsconfig.inc which you must do using the user account "root". I then had a look at Twonky and voila there is the problem. I modified the start up script and all the drives started. I now can get access to the drives but not using the Twonky server. So my drive have spent the last 2 days copying to the data to USB external drives but I will have everything back. Then time to send the thing back to WD again for yet another replacement.

Dear all

I have had the problem that my MBWE NAS drive denied me access to the shares typically 20 min after rebooting with the button in the hole by the sockets. Getting in via SSH and deleting the "torrent" lines as rubberduckmafia says allowed me to do the reboot in the menus rather than pushing the button, but in the end I've found myself copying all the data to a 500GB portable USB drive, doing a factory reset and copying it all back again. This last operation took almost 10 hours but was not interrupted so as rubberduckmafia says, the factory reset does the trick but it's bad that I had to do two copying operations.

solution for when the shares dont want to mount:

first get a linux live dvd my fav is knoppix linux

then take the drive out of the mybook world or any other wd that has 1 drive

put that sata drive in your pc make sure your bios can handle 1 tb and up

start the live linux dvd

when loaded open the command interface cli or whatever it is called in your linux

type su press enter

type mkdir /mnt/wd press enter

now type fdisk -l (lowercase L) press enter

it willl list the partitions

the biggests most likely the last one you need

most likely it be called sdb 1 to 4

now type this on 1 line mount -t xfs -o nouuid /dev/sbd4 /mnt/wd press enter

and your raid partition is mounted

now in the linux desktop open home

press the button that brings you to the former folder till you get to the / folder

then go in the mnt folder then double click the wd folder and there are your shares ready to transfer your files to your local drive.

it is that easy dont wait for wd support they dont know what they are doing my way works wonders

Guys, got a bit of a dilema here. Came back from vacation and found 1TB WD no longer accesible from Windows 7 64bit. I tried to log into the NAS via web and found a php error:

"Warning: is_dir(): Stat failed for /DataVolume/_torrent_ (errno=5 - Input/output error) in /proto/SxM_webui/ctcs/ctcsconfig.inc on line 24 "

It refused to accept the username and password. I could however ssh into the device as root. I could see that DataVolume was not mounted and that the shares Public and Downloads were giving i/o errors when I attempted to list the directory content. I cannot seem to remount them or unmount them. There is also no fstab file in the device. Help, how do I birng this stuff back to life short of cracking open the case and doing a direct sata connection?
