So you have to administer your box via terminal (ssh) or Putty.

You can access the files on it via samba.

I run debian with a clean install now for a few years on MBWE and it runs fine.

I wonder if the the case "hard drive is spinning" was ever solved?
My MBWE makes so much noise that I choose to power it off as long I do not need it which is not exactly how a NAS should be used.

On the other hand i don't think it would be that hard to forward port the wl kernel to a newer version. The 2.6.24 kernel already uses the newer arm structure, so things could be updated around it.

I would give it a shot, but I don't have the whitelight. Honestly my bluerings died and I threw it away a couple years ago too. If someone sends me a wl mbwe I'd see what I can do (: I looked online but I couldn't find one without drives, and I'm broke.

OTOH maybe it's time to move to a better device. My interest is strictly academic, there are newer NAS devices out there.

Make sure you can execute the scripts

chmod a+x /usr/bin/monitorio.sh chmod a+x /etc/init.d/monitorio

And add the script to startup

update-rc.d monitorio defaults 99 99

That's it, now my disks go to sleep after 5 minutes inactivity and they even stay in standby!! Make sure you have no hourly cronjobs scheduled, otherwise your disks will wake up every hour! (Disable the hourly line in /etc/crontab)

Could you tell me how you got the drive to re-mount afterwards? I've got the 2-drive version (with a split RAID i.e. it's now JBAD) and after running the script to put Squeeze on, I have no access to md2 or md4 which were present using the default WD install.

I did an 'apt-get update', then 'apt-get install mdadm' in putty which gave me the pseudo-graphic interface. I answered "all" to the interfaces which should have mounted both drives, but after a reboot… no luck.

i have installed samba, and am messing with the samba.conf at the mo (via nano) - just trying to find a way to openly share out access to the original folders (security isnt an issue, its only used on my personal home network).

ive just started messing with my whitelight - after finding that the standard opts dont let you do things like run a pptp vpn server, openvpn wont really cut it for me as iphones etc are not supported…

i found this and thought great, if i can ge debian on it perhaps i can get this working - however, im an utter linux newbie (i work in IT and am happy at the cmd line but am struggling in linux).

i was just hoping someone could get me started, ive run over the backup commands to copy to wd firmware off - and then downloaded the squeze image both to a usb stick (inserted in to the wdmb and also copied on to the downloads folder of the smb shares).

i just cant seem to kick things off as i cant unzip / run to the image - any pointers would be v v helpful.

I would really appreciate some help though. I would now like to install twonky onto my nas as i have paid for the upgraded versions and tit works seamlessly with my tv but i have tried installing it following the guide to upgrade to 7 and every time i try to start it i get the message "Illegal Instruction".

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Do i need to install a different version to the one preiously on the nas before upgrading to thedebian ?

I was able to compile and run the new kernel on the device, but unfortunatly I faced a little problem.
Although the booting process starts correctly, it does not load the proprietary firmware "copro", released by WD within the sources with file named "gmac_copro_firmware". The latter is situated at "/lib/firmware/" on my filesystem.

Do I need some specific kernel options ? How did you compile the kernel include in your archive ?

Unfortunately I can't share the instructions, since wiki dot keeps insisting there are links in the post when there are none (even tried removing all the slashes and code blocks!).

Hopefully I can up my karma (or wiki dot will fix this bug) and I'll be able to share how I got it to spin down.

You could also take a look at http://zeroone.homeunix.net/~blip/computer/mbwe/encrypt-disk.html, which was written with the stock firmware in mind, but the included kernel modules should be pretty much the same.

Another option might be to edit the .config file manually with a text editor (run "make oxnas_810_eabi_wd_prod_defconfig" first). http://ecryptfs.sourceforge.net/ecryptfs-faq.html#options lists the .config options, so check if they're actually in there, and set them manually if they are.

I wonder if it would be possible to put my drives into a normal cpu install a fully encrypted system as described in that url… and then replace the appropriate parts of the system with your image so that the drives can boot from the MyBook while preserving the LVM dmcrypt setup? I don't think I understand enough about how your upgrade works to do that though. Any suggestions or alternatives would be welcome. Maybe just separating my home partition and setting DMcrypt on that would suffice.

I am trying to use a usb-to-serial device (tellstick). I have installed debian and, using the WD source, compiled the kernel with the required ftdi_sio and usbserial modules. The modules seem to load just fine and when the device is connected, it shows in lsusb. However, I have failed to get the device working. It sometimes seems to be working the first time I send some data but after a few attempts, it fails completely and I get these messages in dmesg:

It might be possible to boot from usb. The bootloader is u-boot, and the source code of the exact version used can be downloaded from WD's website (white light GPL source code). But it would probably be a lot easier to get working if you had serial port access, which I had when I got all of this working, but no longer have.

Just upgradet my "MyBook White Light" to Debian Lenny with your steps above. Want to say a big "THANK YOU!" with hug! Everything is working like a dream now! ;-D

If you want, you could try to get it working yourself. Read http://info4admins.com/tips-to-spindown-your-hard-disk-in-debian-or-ubuntu/ and http://buffalo.nas-central.org/wiki/Debian_hdd_spindown. But note that hdparm -S doesn't work for us, so we instead have to use a script (written by WD) that tenkuken posted on the first page of this thread. At the very least, you have to add noatime to the mount options in /etc/fstab, replace ntpd with a cron job that runs ntpdate and change some config file so that rsyslogd won't report anything about cron. But there might be other things too and I'm not going to write the guide until I've figured it all out. If you can't be bothered working it out yourself then you'll have to wait a week or two for me to get round to it.

Hi, I tried to make a squeeze fw, but even chrooting to squeeze rootfs fails with "kernel too old". Unfortunately, we can't run squeeze on bluerings without upgrading the kernel. Since a kernel requires some oxe800-specific hardware support to work with bluerings, you've got to be insanely good to patch a newer kernel to provide that support. Personally, I'm not nearly as good to do that, but if you're up to the task, you're always welcome to try :-)

But if you wanna try: As macindoe stated, squeeze's udev is incompatible, so you should keep your old version. The hardware and software is somewhat similar on both devices, so if you hold back udev you could be lucky with a dist-upgrade, but it's not a really safe bet. If you have opened your MyBook before, backup your complete harddisk with dd and give it a try…

I'd recommend compiling the modules on PC by following that first guide, then copying the modules across to the NAS. Then after running "depmod -a", you can load the modules with the modprobe command.
