If anyone is still here, I found the i2c bus:

On the My Book Live motherboard, chip U12 is not stuffed, but pins 7 and 8 are i2c data and clock respectively.
They seem to be 1.8v. It is running at 400khz I can access it from linux using /dev/i2c-0 directly.

I see that D+ and D- balls (R1 and T1 in APM82181) are closest to the edge of chip.
These balls are at the right-top corner of chip on picture

img1182m.jpg (see link above in tomas's post)

Using thin wire or pin as a probe it's possible to check whether some of them is connected to pads of J4 or to some trace going from under the chip in this area.

Great, Tomás!

I'd be all over the hardware right now but, unfortunately, I believe I bricked my hard drive and now I'm forced to focus on getting it back online without losing my data.
Maybe the UART hack will help me with the unbricking, so that's a (partial) relief.

I'll post back when it's working again.
In the mean while… Good luck!

Disclaimer: I'm not an expert in linux whatsoever, but I don't consider myself a newbie either.

Tomas123,
I do have the pin layouts of the APM82181 from a project unrelated to WD. Although we ended up not using this chip, it exceeded our expectations so I believe WD made a great choice. I will PM them to you.
You are right about the crystal, that has to be 12.0 Mhz. But you can also use an external oscillator at 12, 24 or 48Mhz, and even better, the chip allows for an internally generated reference clock source generated by the Peripheral/Ethernet PLL when defined by one of the USB System Device Control Registers. So attaching a crystal is completely optional :-)
That should give you a better chance to succeed…

no comments / no ideas ?
Am I the only one who is interested in USB Ports?

The bane of WD.
The whitebook has an usb port but the usb kernel modules in the SDK are incompleted and we need a hardware workaround for simple usb 1.1 devices (a few usb switches can translate from 1 to 2 see http://mybookworld.wikidot.com/forum/t-225050/ ).

Now we have a great hardware with great SDK and a native compiler - but no USB :-(

I soldered USB socket, and tried insert flash drive, unfortunately nothing was mounted and more I didn't see anything usb activity in dmesg log.

testlibusb an lsusb absent on device
