To generate the .config file that WD used for thier firmware run:</p> <div class="code"> <pre><code>cd $MBWE_SDK/kernel/kernel-source/kernel-0.4.6 make oxnas_810_eabi_wd_prod_defconfig</code></pre></div> <p>As far as I remember, I don't think I made many changes to their .config. However, I did edit the source code for the WD modules that control the power button and the recovery button to make them work with debian. You should be able to download those modules (and source code) at <a href="http://www.mediafire.com/?ro0ee294lq4oqqi">http://www.mediafire.com/?ro0ee294lq4oqqi</a></p>

						 <p>I'm not sure what's causing your slow speeds because I can (just about) hit the 100Mbps limit of my network. I get ~10.5&#160;MB/s using FTP and ~10.0&#160;MB/s using SMB. SFTP runs at ~1.7&#160;MB/s because of the weak CPU in the mybook though. The only two things I can think of is that the protocol you're using might be maxing out the CPU in the mybook or your network connection might have a 10Mbps bottleneck (e.g. my wireless only runs at 10Mbps due to thick walls and distance).</p> <p>I made a v2.2 image that has support for IPv6 but for some reason I never released it. You can download it <a href="http://www.mediafire.com/?z91octo2d07st">here</a>. If you could test it for me and check that it's all working fine then I'll update my first post to include it.</p> <p>Your fans always being on is very worrying, primarily because I wasn't aware the white light had fans. Do you have the 2-disk model? I have the 1-disk model, which doesn't have fans, and I found no reference to fans in any of the software. If you have the 2-disk model, and it has fans, then I'm going to need someone with the 2-disk model to work out how to turn them off. Then we can probably copy a script from the blue rings &quot;MyLenny&quot; debian that will make them only run at appropriate times.</p> <p>EDIT: I just found and fixed a very minor bug. Use <a href="http://www.mediafire.com/?dcuex6f2526qx">this download link</a> instead.</p>

I just would have a couple of questions if you don't mind :</p> <p>- My ethernet interface can only transfer data at a speed of 10Mbps (1.2 ~ 1.3&#160;MB/s), that's very annoying.<br /> - I do not have any support for IPv6.<br /> - My fans are always on, even when there is no need.</p> <p>If you have ideas how I could solve those issues, that would be amazing.</p> <p>Anyway, thank you for your work, my NAS is much more manageable with a Debian on it. :-)</p>

						 <p>Hi, sorry for taking so long to get back to you. I think I was a bit unclear in my first post. All of those commands need to be executed on a Linux PC, not on the NAS. So you can create a fully working debain hard drive without ever turning on your NAS. Once you've reached the end of the guide, you should be able to remove the hard drive from your PC, plug it into the NAS and it should boot debian.</p> <p>I'm not sure if it would work in a virtual machine (I haven't used them in a long time), but you'd need to get the VM to see the hard drive you wanted to install debian onto, which might be difficult. If you need to install linux, then I'd recommend <a href="http://www.ubuntu.com/">ubuntu</a>, which is extremely easy to install and use.</p> <p>Hopefully I answered your question, but tell me if there was something else you wanted to know.</p>

I have allready downloaded the (squeeze)Image, but now I wonder how I have to proceed. You describe, that I have to unpack the image to the temp directory. If I replace the old drive in the whitelight by the new one, then it probably won't boot up. But isn't that the state of a bricked mbwe? Shall I mount the drive in a linux (maybe in a virtual machine) and then prepare it?<br /> I hope that the question is not to much neewbie&#8230; Thanks.</p>

						 <p>This guide will show you how to install debian completely from scratch on a new hard drive. You may want to do this if you've bricked your MBWE white light or if you want more than the default 2GB root filesystem.</p> <p>This guide will only work with the white light version and I've only tested it with the 1-disk model, but it will almost certainly work with the 2-disk model as well. If your mybook isn't bricked (yet), then I suggest that you follow this guide on a spare hard drive, because if something goes wrong then you can always just plug the original hard drive back in and keep on running the stock firmware. If you wipe the original hard drive in order to follow this guide, then you're taking a large risk that you'll brick your device!</p> <p>Please take a look <a href="http://mybookworld.wikidot.com/install-clean-hdd-in-white-light-my-book-world-edition">here</a> if you want to install the default WD firmware instead of debain.</p> <p>You will need to download one of my debian images from <a href="http://mybookworld.wikidot.com/forum/t-304045/how-to:debian-on-mybook-white-light">this thread</a> (either lenny or squeeze). Then run &quot;mkdir temp; tar xvzf debian-*.tar.gz -C temp/&quot;. Now any of the files mentioned in this guide should be located in temp/. Please read the first post in that thread so that you know what you're installing.</p> <p>After installing, your MAC address will be set to a default value. This is fine if you only follow this guide on one mybook, but if you're a huge fan of the mybook as well as debian, and plan on following this guide more than once, then you'll want to set your own MAC address by editing the first line of /etc/inittab to something like</p> <div class="code"> <pre><code>GM::sysinit:/sbin/modprobe gmac mac_adr=0x00,0x21,0x5d,0xa9,0x21,0x81</code></pre></div> <br /> and also change your hostname in /etc/hostname. Just make sure the MAC address you choose is valid, or else the ethernet port won't work and you won't be able to ssh in to fix it. Just leave it as the default if you're only using this guide on one device. <p>This guide uses a GUID Partition Table which, for those of you who don't know, will allow you to use hard drives larger than 2TiB as well as have more than 4 primary partitions. So, if you can get your hands on a 1000TB hard drive, it will work with this guide! If you don't know what a GUID Partition Table is, then don't worry about it.</p> <p>You can modify the steps in this guide however you want. For example, you can use any partition scheme you want. But if you do change some of the commnds, make sure that you:<br /> - have the root filesystem on a RAID device called /dev/md0, because that's what the bootloader expects<br /> - install the kernel provided (and not the WD one) to make sure it's compatible with the provided kernel modules.<br /> - edit /etc/fstab if you create additional partitions (you don't need to do this if all you do is use different partition sizes to me)</p> <p>Finally, you'll need to open the case of your mybook and move the hard drive(s) to a Linux PC to follow this guide. Opening the case can be a bit tricky, but there are links to instructions on how to do it at the bottom of <a href="http://mybookworld.wikidot.com/hacks-and-howto">this page</a>.
