Running Twonkyvision on my Western Digital MyBook World Edtion , 1 Terabyte NAS Device for one year now. Just upgraded to Twonkyvision for emedded NAS Linux ARM little endian uclibc 0.9.28 ver 4.4.11.

I have my PS3 connected via Wired 100Mbps LAN Swtich as DLNA renderer/player. There still are some minor glithces which are to be fixed by Twonky.

When streaming thru Twonky DLNA, ONLY AVI is the most compatible format for PS3. It is playable by every means. Support the scene search function to jump anywhere in the file (in case you left the movie in the middle and want to resume). Fast forward and rewind always work correctly. File information and running time is always shown. And if the file is copied to PS3 internal harddisk then it correctly supports the file specifications like Length,Codec,Bitrate,Resolution,Running Time and Location, some of these fields are not shown when file information is shown for a DLNA residing file.

However for all other types of files the PS3 can play, a lot of functions do not work correctly. Even if the file size is small 600~700MB or large 4GB ~ above . The file cannot be fast forwarded to all speeds. The file cannot be resumed for any point where you stop forwarding it. (It has to be stopped and replayed again to play from that point). The scene search function cannot find any scenes. Mainly because the file length is not shown correctly. It is always 99:99:99 . Thats why any time based seek functions cannot work. Not the mention if you are fond of switchable subtitles then they can only work with AVI files, which can incorporate DivX compliant XSUB subtitles. If any other file needs subtitles then they have to be 'burned' directly on the movies.

This happens for all other formats for PS3 namely VOB, MP4, MPG, WMV, TS, M2T(s).

I know a lot of this is not related to TwonkyMedia, and on PS3 firmware capabilities, but still a lot of things can be improved for various file type handling by it.

Just wanted to know that has anyone experimented with all these file types and can guide me. Does the latest beta of Twokyvision addresses some of them. As far as I have read it is more focused on having compatibility to play much new formats like FLAC and OGG, which to be honest i have never come across so much even in my reasonably huge media collection.

Managed to resolve this - I noticed the following line in the log files:

LOG_SYSTEM:upnp_file_open_write file open write error "/usr/local/twonkymedia/twonkymedia.db/4.4.11"

I realised that I'd installed TwonkyMedia to "/usr/local/TwonkyVision" not "/usr/local/twonkymedia" which explains why the file couldn't be opened. I guess this meant that the system couldn't save the results of it's scanning, i.e. it was finding my media files, but couldn't record that it had.

I made some amendments to my installation (renamed the TwonkyVision folder to twonkymedia, changed the startup script and changed the init.d file) and now all is well.

One problem remains though that I need help with. Despite having it all running on my MBWEII 1TB and visible from both my laptop (via web browser) and Xbox360, it isn't displaying any media.

I have two shares on the MyBook, Public and Richard. I have a number of folders and MP3 files in the Richard share but TwonkyMedia isn't seeing them.

Have I missed something?

OK I am on the last hurdle here but would like some help please. I managed to get the twonkyvision on my mbwe 500gb. The page is up and I can see files from within the web browser. When I try to view the files from my ps3, it fails miserably. It detects the media server which is good, however when i search for a movie or a song, it displays "there are no titles" I have searched all over the web and I cant find nothing related to this and MBWE. Has anyone found a fix for this??? thanks

If you go on the webpage from TwonkyMedia then you can download the linux version for an x86 processor. But I think, the MBW has an ARM processor. Is this right?

If you run my script, you will have to daemonize it too as it waits 2 minutes in case your box has an uptime in minutes

If you create a symbolic link starting with a Capital 'S' (like S90twonky), the script will already know you want to start the service. If the symbolic link is a capital 'K', it means it will stop the service.

Normally, there's no need to end the script with an ampersand as your harddisk is probably running for a while…..
I only included it because my satellite-receive (a linux-box as well) is too busy when it just booted……

Hi all, sorry this kind of spans more than twonkyvision, but think I'm up to that point.

Been toying with a MBWE for several days now, and jumping back and fourth beginning Linux and Vi command pages :)

My initial goal was to just have a simple server to host video and photos without having to leave the PC running day and night. Like everyone else, discovered the limitations of the MioNet software.

As with most everything, my goal shifted after progress was made here and there.

Without installing MioNet, updated the firmware via WD site. Unfortunately discovered that in doing so downgraded the included software package. Re-installing the compiler isn't at the top of my list right now. Going in for back surgery this month, and will spend recovery time setting up my xx060 box to access the MBWE and compile on that machine. SCSI Ethernet and the lot!

Applied the "fix" to allow assess via ssh, downloaded PuTTy and WinSCP for the PC.

Got the www server up and running, at least I could see "Hello World" and some jpg files on the drive from work after following the example set up.

Next trouble I ran into was connecting the USB device to the MBWE and being able to access it as a network device via XP. WD docs state that an external USB device will only be displayed with MioNet and Access Anywhere active.

Not finding any beginner Linux tips on getting the external USB network side set up where I could view the external USB device in XP, I succumbed and installed MioNet. Following the installation instructions (WD/MioNet CD) the external USB device was visible as a network drive, and was able to copy folders files drag and drop to the MBWE without problem (if a bit slow!!!!).

Outside the scope of this forum, ran into problems attempting to xfer trp (MPEG Transport Stream) video files from my Satellite PVR onto my PC (XP O/s). I use an external (black case) 500GB USB MyBook (FAT32 required) as the target device for the PVR. The PVR does some weird naming conventions at times with the folders it sticks the TRP files into, and from within XP drag and drop doesn't always work. Then I thought that if I connected the USB drive external to the MBWE, I could copy them to the PC via the network. Accessing the files via MioNet connected to the MBWE I could see some of the folders names had been changed to another name. Must have something to do with XP and non-standard FAT32 size devices. Don't care, xfers work using that process, so I'm good there. The actual file names inside the folder remain intact.

While waiting for the transfers to finish, started to read about Twonky and thought that would be a much better use of the MBWE than just being able to down load video files. I followed the first example here to install Twonky, and got the server up and running, but wasn't able to access any of the directory where I had files stored, even though in the Twonky set up I could point to the folder and save the location. For a test I uploaded a video with Twonky to the server to see where it put the file. The file was uploaded to the root directory, even thought the set up was pointed to the shares folder created via the GUI interface for the MBWE.

After exiting Twonky (didn’t include the script to keep it running after closing PuTTY), I couldn't launch it again. I checked to see what directory I was in, tried changing to the location it's installed in, and got the error that I didn't have permissions to execute the file (not the exact wording).

Here is the meat of my dilemma. Installing MioNet wiped out the admin password created during the enabling SSH step. MioNet creates a new admin user and password. I can still access the MBWE via PuTTY and WinSCP with an alternate user account I created, but cannot access it with the new admin account created by MioNet.

Back to the beginning.

If I re-run the Hinner script to enable SSH access, and reset the password, is that going to hose me everywhere else? Will that allow me to log on as "admin" again, and will that get me set up where I have access to all the folders and files (or do I have access now and just don't realize it?)?

When I log in through SSH with the "user" account, can I still install software (that account has privileges set in the MBWE GUI for R/W access)? Do I have to be "su" or in "root" to install the software? I'm a bit lost here, it did work after the initial install as stated above, but it seemed confused as to where usable directories were. I tried chmod 755 on the Twonky app, but bash came back with I didn't have permissions for that.

Could someone point to, or include how to enable the external USB device as a network device visable to XP? I could completely forget about MioNet then :)

I followed the instuctions and was able to install and get twonky to run. I was just wondering if there is a different text editor that I could use to edit the files as to setup the automatic load on system start. The second thing that i was wondering is, is it possible to get this to work with the PS3. Most of my videos are dixv or xvid and they do work when played directly from a usb connected hard drive, yet PS3 is unable to play them, says files unsupported.

They do however play with my Xbox, so I am simply wondering why not on the PS3.

Despite being totally new to Linux, by the tremendous support and invaluable knowledge shared at this site via testing/experiments by different users, in a week's time I have successfully replaced my original 500GB (MyBook World I) with a Seagate 1 TB HardDisk, have installed a couple of applications via console (puTTY) and Optware.

Most of all , I was able to install and run Twonky Media automatically for all my digital media collection. So as opposed to my previous practice when I has to keep my PC on all the times for Tversity DLNA server, the only thing now on all the time is MBWE fully functional as a standalone DLNA server compatible with PS3 for all standard and High Definition video rendering.

Thanks everyone, the mission seems accomplished for the moment, but would love to try out new possibilities for which i am reading around in the forums/articles.

Thanks for the valuable information you have shared. Infact I first installed MediaTomb, but then i was not able to see my media files recognized at my PS3 via MediaTomb, then reading this thread I decided to give TwonkyMedia a try.

Please note that I am not able to uninstall MediaTomb first, since I dont know the method to do so. I have just disable its startup script from the directory /etc/init.d , so MediaTomb does not runs in the background every time I start MyBook World Edition I (500GB).

By following the instructions on this thread I am able to install Twonky Media and start it as a service via puTTY, I have given my MBWE a static IP of 192.168.1.10, however in my web browser I can only see the first page of the Twonky server running. (http://192.168.1.10:9000) , when I click to go to the TwonkyMedia settings and configuration page (http://192.168.1.10:9000/config) the web browser keeps waiting for ever without a response from the MBWE. I have also defined the add static route entry command found the (Howto.txt) found the TwonkyMedia setup file from the website.

Its kinda strange and I have'nt been able to make out a clue. Can anyone please help me on that, any other specific info which I can share to let you provide a solution, please reply for that.

I hope they hurry up and relase the transcoding engine. Although i have a feeling our little mybooks wont have the power to transcode on the fly :(

The important thing is I can still use Putty to access my MBW and I can even manually start Twonkymedia. Is there a way to fix the Web interface like manually start it or something and perform a system restore?

If not then how about a remote image restore from within PuTTy?

I lost the web interface this time. Luckily PuTTy still works!

There are 2 possible reasons that this happened:

1. When I tried to install Twonky, I extracted it several times in different folders (mostly by accident), then I manually deleted twonky files and folders one by one. I remember once (by accident again), instead of deleting folder cgi-bin, I deleted the folder bin using "rm - r bin" - stupid me. I think it must have been in /root/usr/ but it could have been anywhere else. However I thought I saved it since I rebooted my book and it worked like a charm. I even managed to make Twonky work after that.

2. Trying to make Twonky to Autostart, been in /etc/init.d/ I used:

"cp mionet.sh.bak S90twonkyview"

then

"vi S90twonkyview"

Then I copied the autostart script from the post above and right-clicked it in vi. I remember that the script was pasted correctly however, it seemed like I had triggered some action because PuTTy flashed 2 or 3 times just as when you hit enter being at the bottom. Then after reboot I have no web interface.

Any ideas?

How about a remote firmware update to restore initial state, is it possible? And how to find the correct firmware version without web inf?

You will find that you are not in /usr/local/TwonkyVision but /root/usr/local/TwonkyVision

Look in the first line of of the second block of code, the tilde mark (~) indicated you are in the HOME directory of the logged in user. i.e. /root.

However, I do have this directory:

I am a total N00b on linux so please bear with me… I was able to download the package from the command line but couldn't unzip it (I'm guessing I don't have IPKG on my MyBook). So instead I used WinRar on my PC to unzip the package and then used WinSCP to put the files on there at /usr/local/TwonkyVision.

Now my problem is that I cannot seem to run the program from the comand line using Putty.

If I navigate to /usr/local/TownkyVision and then enter twonkymedia on the command line I get "-bash: twonkymedia: command not found" however the file is there.

If I execute the file using WinSCP as either root or the user I created on there it runs absolutely fine.

I have set every permission against the file to allow everything and even changed ownership of the file to the user I created but I still have the same problem.

Obviously once I can run it from the command line I guess I just then add an entry into the /etc/initteb as per this
::sysinit:/usr/local/TwonkyVision/twonkymedia to get it to start on reboot.

I have only some troubles with photo made in past years that (in "by date" order) are displayed as 04/2008 !!! Very strange !!

I have installed and can execute the TwonkyMedia Server, BUT - when I close putty on my PC the Twonky service stops on the server - how do i exit Putty and have Twonky remain open.

I don't mind starting twonky if the server has to be restarted, power cuts etc. but need to know how to keep the service going - please forgive my green-ness and lack of linux/ssh ability.
