I want to install DCTC client (DirectConnect client) to my MBWE. But the automake is not working corretly. I get an error:

Automake 1.10-2 is installed with optware, but it needs perl. How can I config the automake to use the installed perl?

CUPS 1.3.9 is installled in my MyBook WEII. I get a ‘application/postscript’ format incompatible error when I try to print a test page. What's the problem?

The libs have been installed into /usr/lib/js.

I had installed the precompiled binary frm http://www.jpkessler.de/mybookupnp/index.html (Thanks JPK, it worked real nice :) but I couldn't get the scripting to work (at all).

Any ideas how to get spidermonkey working?

Greetings to everyone. I am something of a noob to Linux so I apologise for my ignorance.

I have followed the steps on activating SSH, and consequently I have been able to connect to mybookworld using a suitable client (CuteFTP Pro) and I can access the root drive and every directory from their. This way I can upload and download files, create folders and do everything I need over the internet.

However, this is where the problems lies. The only credentials with which I can log in are user = root and password = root. This means that anyone else who uses these credentials can also access my drive from anywhere on the internet !!
I can find no mention in the hacks as to how to change these login details to something more secure.

How do I change these login details, or am I going about this completely the wrong way ?

I have a MyBook World I 1T with Firmware 02.00.18. I want to configure the ssh, but I disabled the password authentication, and the key authentication is not work. I have a notebook only, and I can't remove the disk from device.

I've tried to install Gcc with the ipkg manager, but i cannot seem to get it working.
As far as i know i haven't updated my MyBook's firmware, so i haven't found any help in the many threads that says you have to restore some of the files. By the way: My MyBook was bought in october this year.

Any way, I think it is a good solution for my needs, where a few people must share access and updates of project files.

The problem is that I could not find a version for the ARM processor or in optware.

I have no gcc compiler and I am afraid of trying to follow the instructions to get the gcc working, as I have little expertise in linux.

Has anybody compiled it to myBook?

It has some interesting features that I cannot ignore:
1.- It gives me access from a computer with mionet installed from outside the corporate firewall: It mounts a logical drive using \\some IP\IDXXXX that works from outside the firewall when mionet is running. When I try to mount my samba shares using SMB for example \\some IP\PUBLIC it asks for the user and keyword but then it fails. I suppose that the 445 port is closed in corporate firewall.

2.- It gives me access to my files and folders in my shares from any computer witout mionet installed, through the mionet web site and its java interface. I don't like it very much, but it works.

3.- I can invite people to join my team and give access to shares. I can share just a file with somebody through email, as it creates a special access key for that person.

What I don't like of it is its interfaces, that it consumes a lot of resources in mybook and has many other options to share my own pc directories that I am not going to use (and I am not sure if it is free or you have to pay an annual fee).

What I am looking for is a software or combinations of software or software combination that can give me access to myBook with all features of mionet but without its drawbacks.

being the prat I am, I didn't make a backup of my original /etc/smb.conf before I started fiddling with it. Needless to say, I have broken samba on my MBW.

Could someone please post their /etc/smb.conf file so that I can recover. I know that I can get the backup image, but 57MB seems a bit overkill for 20 lines of text.

I've tried recently to install the latest mldonkey available for MBWE taken from here.

Everything seems to go fine, except that right after I start it and I connect to the webUI, I suddenly start seeing <defunct> 'ps' and 'awk' processes raising in number, until in the very end I can't even ls on my system any more(all resources taken).

Has anyone experienced a similar problem?

I'm at work right know, as soon as I get home I'll post some additional data (startup pscripts, which mldonkey is in use…)

I suspect it's a mechanical disk fault but see if anyone can confirm… The disk spins up but then only makes a repeated "chug chug" noise. It's not the high-pitched click I've had with a prevous disk that indicates the read heads are gone. The MyBook can't boot. I've removed the disk and connected it with a USB adaptor to an Ubuntu VM. fdisk reports that there's no partition table. gpart (which tries to guess the partition table in case it's been corrupted) just hangs. Has anyone experienced anything similar and can confirm it's mechanical?

The disk is currently in the fridge (I read it on the internet so it must be true) in an attempt to cause any bits of metal that might be out of alignment to shrink back into place. Hopefully I can recover my photos tonight before it warms up again. Hitting it with a hammer is also an option.

Any recommendations for what to do with the body? I could reassemble the whole thing and try for a refund, I think I'm still within warranty, but where's the fun in that? If I fitted a new, 1TB disk and attempted a new installation from scratch, is there a limit on which disks I could use. Am I restricted to Western Digital? I'm tempted to get a 5400rpm lower speed disk to see if it runs cooler but would like to shop around.

I don't know why but sometimes vi, saving file I was editing, erases everything..
This time I was editing smart_spindown script.. Now, once rewritten I've found a strange behavior: it says disk is spun down, even if actually isn't!
I can access an open files on PUBLIC, I hear disk spinning..
Looking at script I've found that it checks drive status with hdparm -C /dev/sda. And everytime i use that command says:

[root@:~]# hdparm -C /dev/sda

/dev/sda:
drive state is: standby

what's happened? Everything works well but I don't think it's normal.Is it?

Anyone manage to install GCC from downloading the source code?

I downloaded the 500GB backup image available on this site, and copied out the GCC binary and it runs but when I try and compile the GCC compile from its source it states even tho GCC is found it does not work :(

So I'm guessing there are other (libaries?) files I need?

Anyone know what other files i need to copy out of the 500GB backup image and where to put them, so I can either get a working GCC or compile GCC from source code?

Please let me know how I could review it. I have used it as it was out of the box - I am not a Linux expert, so at this point I am hoping there is a reset combination that could help.

I plugged it in after a few days off and it started spinning but no access so I unplugged it.

Three days later I plugged it in again and it started to work. My XP machine accessed it and I could even copy off some files but after about 10 minutes it "fell off" the network. Now it does not want to turn off, so I have to unplug.

I then get the error message Unable to load config info from /usr/lib/ssl/openssl.cnf and it makes sense since I have no /usr/lib/ssl directory at all. Clearly, the openssl is installed (which I also have checked with Optware).

I must admit I am a bit of a newbie and tried to change some samba permissions a few days ago. So I think I screwed up, but I do not know how to solve this problem. Who can help me?

I have been through most of the processes on this website and most have worked well, not completely sure what I have achieved by implementing some and feel like it was partly blind faith.

The issue I have with my World Book is that when I start transferring files over a mapped drive it seems to go OK and then it will throws up an error stating that a particular file is inaccessible or I do not have the right to access it etc.

After this error happens nothing works, it has an issue with every file!! I can only get it working again by rebooting it, but after starting the transfer it happens all over again.

All I want is to be able to store my files on this drive, but I am very close to smashing it!!!

The other day, my boss said he couldn't write files. When I checked, sure enough all the shares were read-only. I looked at the web interface, and it said Drive A had failed. Does it normally make the shares read only if the RAID is degraded? In SSH, it showed a drive missing from the RAID, and fdisk -l didn't even list the bad drive.

We got a new WD 500GB drive, almost exactly the same model except the new one is "green" :) I checked that the box booted and files were accessible with the bad drive removed (to make sure I got the right one). We installed the new drive, used the web interface's format new drive option and then left it rebuilding. I noticed that it stopped doing SSH and web (but was still pingable) but assumed this was part of its process to shut everything down while syncing the mirror. We left it overnight. In the morning, it was still flashing the rings alternately to indicate that the RAID was degraded. My boss powered it down and tried to reboot. The blue lights flash a bit and then you get a steady blue light. It didn't do ssh or web, and was not even pingable. We tried the reset config button, but no change.

I'm not onsite, but since then he removed the new drive and it boots, but the web interface gives a 404 and ssh starts but terminates quickly. CIFS connections seem to be timing out, and NFS is sort of working but throwing lots of errors, e.g:

• session request to 192.168.1.2 failed (Call returned zero bytes (EOF))
• ls: cannot access Price Lists: Stale NFS file handle

I'm thinking of putting the drive or drives into a linux box and poking around. Anyone got any clues from the above what is going on? Did we screw something up? Where did we go wrong?

My WD Fan is not working although it runs for seconds at startup

I'm not sure if the fan was working since I bought it.

But when I installed 'Alternative temperature monitor' , I noticed the temperature reach 65 c and the fan dose not run.

What is the safe high temperature?

Also, I need a command to run/stop wd fan to do a test.

I have a 1.5TB MBWE II with Firmware 2.00.18. I have installed ssh, transmission and ftpd in it.

I also have one Windows XP and one Windows Vista PC. I would like to be able to read and write files onto my MBWE from my Windows XP ( or VISTA) PC.

How do I do it ?

1) Do I need to install anything on my XP installation ?
2) Do I need to install anything onto my MBWE ?

I try to compile ncdu, I made the configuration but make returns error as:

I'm running 2.00.18 on an MBWE II and working with the encrypted filesystem, but it looks like the version of firmware I'm running has stripped the mount_encrypted_drives.sh. Does anyone have a copy of this?

The problem is that I have been touching /etc/lighttpd/lighttpd.conf to try to connect to port 443 using ssh instead of port 80.
It worked, but when I tried to make a redirection to redirect http request to https, it did not work.
When I tried to restart ligghttp it says that pcre is not working in the system.

The problem is that meanwhile the system has rebooted, without lighttp.conf having been fixed.

Now I have no access from http (obviously, as lighttpd is no working) but I have no ssh access either.

I suppose that the system keeps trying to start lighttpd and does not continue to start sshd.

I suppose I have to extract the disk and use a linux distribution to mount it (may you recommend one bootable from a DVD?).

The problem is that I had mirrored the two disk too, so I am not sure if I can just take any of them, mount it in a linux system, fix lighttp.conf and reboot the mybook with just that disk on it.

And how do I reconstruct the other disk?

Please help… I am a bit afraid…

Now, when I connect at home, everything works great.
But when I connect from Internet (using dyndns):
http:…… gets me to Shared Storage Manager
https:… gets me to the router.
I have forwaded ports:
80, 3210, 443.

Do you have any idea how I can manage to connect the right way?!

I am seeking advice how to minimise reserved blocks on my usb drive connected to mybook

I have purchased 1.5TB drive and formated it to linux ext3 file sytem. After conection it to MBW i found that because of 5% space allocation for reseved blocks i am short of 75GB!!

I know that you can amend reserved blocks by using command over shh:

tune2fs -m 1 /dev/??

the thing is that i dont know what device is my usb drive.

I have assumed from the posts that it might be called sdd.

When typed:

tune2fs -m 1 /dev/sdd

or

tune2fs -m 1 /dev/sdd1 or sdd2 and so on (i have checked devices list)

i get this:

tune2fs: No such device or address while trying to open /dev/sdd
Couldn't find valid filesystem superblock

??

So how to amend reserved blocks in ext3 to 1%?

is there a shutdown script for the MBWE?
I need a solution to shutdown the MBWE from a remote host easily, without telnet or ssh login.
The best would be just calling a special http link and the MBWE would do a shutdown.

This looks very interesting it is using a special port instead of a special URL (http://kyyhkynen.net/stuff/mybook/lighttpd_on_demand.php) but i am not able to get it working for a remote shutdown.

Has anybody successfully modified the script to do the remote shutdown?
Would be great if somebody who successfully modified the script could help me.

But I need to install rdiff-backup to be able to make differential backups of file system and to do rollbacks of files to a specific point in time.
I have tried it in other systems and it is great.

The problem is that there is no optware package with this program.

I have the sources, but have no gcc compiler in my MBWE.
I have little expertise in linux, so I am afraid of trying to restore gcc in my system to recompile rdiff-backup.
Has anybody tried it?
Is there any other place where I could get the binaries for the MBWE ?

I have recently bought a MBWE II 2TB system. I decide to buy this system mainly due to its hacking possibilities read in this wiki.

I have updated the firmware (from 2.0.15 to 2.0.18) and installed the ssh and optware hack.
It works ok, thank you for that.

The problem is that I want to use rsync to back up to and from external web providers (in site5).

The problem is that in site 5 there is rsync 3.0 and it seems not to interact with 2.x rsync programs.

So I need to upgrade rsync in my book to 3.0 version.
I have tried the optware packege using ipkg get rsync - 3.0
But it tries to install it and gives me some errors:

But using a specific user, I am however getting the following error on FTP client side:

I have then simply tried to activate logging parameters in /opt/etc/vsftpd.conf, but no success !
Not realy surprised because it seems that this /opt/etc/vsftpd.conf is never loaded because if I rename/remove it … reboot … my vsftpd is still working properly !

I then have removed/commented out line about vsftpd into /etc/inetd.conf … reboot … my vsftpd is still working properly !

I run unsfd but the problem is that when i run on my pc

 mount 10.1.1.4:/share/internal/PUBLIC/ ./temp/ 

i get

 mount.nfs: access denied by server while mounting 10.1.1.4:/share/internal/PUBLIC/ 

I have no idea whats the problem :-s i search the net but i didnt find anything that worked.

Both have SSH enabled, both have the same username accounts and both have identicial root passwords.

I want to copy 500gb from one NAS to the other.

If i do this through windows, the files themselves, do they go direct from one NAS to the other or do they filter through the windows machine first of all?

If they filter through the windows machine there's a higher chance of packet loss right? Specially being on a wireless connection (although I could quite easily plug it into the router).

Is there anyway to transfer files directly from one NAS to the other?

Tried resetting the drive using the reset button at the back. No dice. Any ideas folks? I have quite a lot of important stuff on this baby.

I know that if all else fails i can try to mount it on a desktop somewhere..

I'm the proud owner of two My books. I spent the best part of four hours installing Twonky the first time around and three the second. So as to not have the same problems again when I buy another I wrote myself a quick help guide and thought I'd share it with any other linux novices like myself.

Now please bare in mind I really am a Linux novice. The below works on firmware 02.00.15 and 01.01.18. I'm not skilled enough to scrap the lot and start again just to 100% guarentee it works however like I say, it works for me so there's no reason it shouldn't work for anyone else. There are probably much easier ways to do this for those who know linux commands but like me I'm sure there are loads of windows buff who scratched there heads.

Ok here we go;

First off create a username called Twonky on the My Book

Apply the ssh patch from http://martin.hinner.info/mybook/sshaccess.php

Log into putty with Twonky username and password created

Type SU

Next type sudo passwd to change the password for root

Download and install winSCP, using the root account create a directory called TwonkyVision in usr/local/

Get files from http://www.twonkyvision.com/Download/4.4/twonkymedia-armel-uclibc-0.9.28.zip

Extract locally

Copy files to Twonkyvision dir in winSCP under the root account

Right click the files twonkymedia and twonkymediaserver and select properties. Change the permissions to 700

If not already log back into putty and get to root by using the su command

Navigate to /etc/init.d/

Type wget http://www.mpfspromotions.com/muzikrandoms/S90Twonkyview.sh

Now using winSCP login as root and navigate to /etc/init.d

Right click the S90Twonkyview.sh file, select properties and change the permissions to 755

Test by restarting the My Book.

To get onto Twonky config use http://<MY IP>:9000/config

im hoping someone can help me with setting up my vsftpd. Please make it idiot proof with instructions as I am quite useless with this Linux stuff :)

ok I have the vsftpd running ok and I can login to it. Here is my problems:-

1) I have 5 users I have created with "adduser" command on the mybook. One user (ME!) should have access to everything on the drive and the other 4 users should be locked to a directory called "THEVAULT". Currently I can login with any of the users and they default to /home/username directory. What I want is the 4 users to default to /shares/internal/THEVAULT and me to default to root.

2) I have a file setup called vsftpd.user_list but its empty, what should be in there? (exact detail please)

3) I also have individual vsftpd.conf files for each user in /opt/etc/vsftpd_user_config/username so I can configure each user. Currently all users have the same vsftpd.conf file, a copy of which is below.

All I want is access to vsftpd for the 5 users as described above but im havingn a nightmare achieving this :(

I'm having an issue with my Western Digital My Book World Edition 1.0 TB NAS device. The unit had worked perfectly for about 4 months, and then for about 2 months I had my LAN down for reconfiguration (new switches, VLANs, linux based router, rewiring, etc).

During this down-time, I forgot the password to access my files on the drive. After doing some reading on the unit and the drive's filestructure, and discovering that it was a Linux EXT3 disk structure, I disassembled the unit & put the drive in my CentOSv5.2 Quad Core system, figuring to extract the files & programs that I wanted. That did NOT work, as the drive would not mount.

I then reassembled the drive, and I followed the enclosed instructions to reset the drive security, and reset the Admin password to 123456. I also reset my user password, and gave my user account full rights to the shares.

Since that time, using my user credentials (e151280 & password), I have only been able to access my files in a READ-ONLY fashion, and cannot add/move/rename/delete any files on the WD NAS.

I followed the online instructions for setting up SSH access into the NAS, and can log in as Admin, and can add/move/delete/rename files from the command line as Admin. I also turned off MIONET, by commenting out the MIONET start command in the startup script, and even ran the 'chown' command recursively, to make my userid the owner of all of the files in the /shares/internal/PUBLIC directory, but when accessing my files over the LAN from WindowsXP file manager, my access is still READ-ONLY.

This is where I am stuck. As I am an old-school DOS/UNIX/LINUX CLI type person, I have been managing the files in an SSH command line session, but this is cumbersome. I'd REALLY like to manage the files in a GUI under Windows.

Does anyone have any suggestions?
