Accessing 2nd Disk in Twonky (new Firmware installed)

Just upgraded to the new firmware, bringing Twonky to version 5.1. Problem is, I can no longer access the media folders on the second drive in the Twonky configuration tool (I've got a 4-tb MBWE using JBOD). Before I could access the files by adding the following path in the 'Current Location' section of Twonky

./../../ExtendVolume/Public2/Shared Videos

When I try this in version 5.1 and save, the path automatically removes the './../../' and so becomes:

/ExtendVolume/Public2/Shared Videos

which doesn't pick up any of the files. Is there anything I can do to get around this? Perhaps changing the Twonky config file to point to in front of the 2 drive share names (DataVolume and ExtendVolume), if so where is this file stored and how do I go about changing it through windows?

Insturctions for adding CIFS (Samba) support for White Light. This will allow your MyBookj to mount folder shared by Windows Stations.

* Login as root.
* mkdir -p /lib/modules/2.6.24.4/kernel/fs/cifs/

The next two lines downloads the file cifs.fo attached to this page and places it in /lib/modules/2.6.24.4/kernel/fs/cifs/:

* cd /lib/modules/2.6.24.4/kernel/fs/cifs/
* wget http://mybookworld.wikidot.com/local--files/cifs-for-whitelight/cifs.ko

* echo "/lib/modules/2.6.24.4/kernel/fs/cifs/cifs.ko:"» /lib/modules/2.6.24.4/modules.dep
* insmod cifs.ko

Now you can mount Windows directories. For example

mkdir /mnt/xp_machine
mount -t cifs //`net lookup x`/y /xp_machine

where x is your windows box name, and y is the share name. There are many options for the mount command, see for example here, but you should use mount , not mount.cifs.

I get

[root@MyBookWorld 2.6.24.4]# mount -t cifs //192.168.XX.YY/XXXX/ /mnt/old/

I bought a white light yesterday and i am still trying to figure out how to create a share which everyone(nobody) can read (browsable read only) and a specific user can read/write. In the blue rings i have there is a choice when sharing a folder "Minimum permissions" which are the permissions for everyone. This choice is not present in white light. Any help appreciated.

Recover of data folders / files

Hi all,

Somehow all the data within my 3 of 5 shares were deleted, dont ask my how, i have no clue how this had happened.
The root shares (100_Movies, 200_Music, 300_Pictures) are there but all data inside the shares are gone.
So no technical defect, simply deleted.
Is there a way how i can restore the folder and files? I have connected already the HD to the PC and tried DiskInternals LinuxRecovery Tool,
but did not find anything that looks like my movies.

I'm no real linux expert, but could it be that only the "index" is destroyed and is there a command to check this.

If you have any suggestions, please let me know.

My complete movie collection is gone…

linear raid /dev/md4 missing space after rescued mybookworld 2 blue ring

Hello

My english is not very good so dont blame me ;)

I have juste recover my mybook with mbr from rescue procedure and the image files from christoff4444. The other mbr fils didn't boot and the image files from rescue procedure work fine too.

But ! When I make or the systeme make a linear raid the total space see with mdadm -Q and -D is +- 748Gb and the space in /proc/mdstat is +-2980Gb. I m using 2x 1500Gb seagate drive partionned and formated like the procedure of christoff4444 and i have try all methode to make it. But my effor were fruitless and all the time I get a linear raid with +-748Gb.

For now I have mounted /dev/sda4 in /shares/internal and /dev/sdb4 in /shares/internal2 created PUBLIC, PUBLIC2 and configured to use it as share.

I guess for a driver issue or maybe a file to edit but i m not linux expert. If someone can show me the way to have a linear raid with all disk space :)

Hello. I've bought recently a My Book World Edition II 4 TB.
I've used it as 2 TB raid 1.
I've broken it when trying to instal some optware applications.
I've searched some solutions on the forum. I've managed to access the 4th partition wit a live linux cd.
The problem is, I need to access the 1st partition so I could repair the boot.
Every time I try it, it doesn't recognize the file system type?!?
Can someone explain how to access the others 3 partitions and not only the last one?
Is there a Backup Image for the 4Tb version I could use to restore the 1st partition?

Formatting in Progress ... forever

Hi there,

I've being trying to recover a WE II Blue Rings for a while and finally I found this wiki. My WE showed a few weeks ago that Drive A had failed, so I replaced by another WD drive, same size. After the drives were sync I decided to clear everything and started a format. But it's now freeze "formatting in progress" and I can't add or replace any of the drives. Even booting up with just one drive, it just shows Formatting In Progress. Does anyone has a tip of how to unlock this condition?

MyBook workgroup

hi,
i tried to search the forum but dont know the right terminology to perform a search

I have an emtec (n200) player, upnp works fine but with limits,
i prefer to browse mybook folders and launch files from there

The MyBook is part of my (MSHOME) workgroup, and when the pc is on i can browse it
without any problem

When the pc is off i cant see it (from mediaplayer)
The n200 has linux (dont know what kind)

now, the question is:
It is possible to activate something on MyBook similar to the windows workgroups service,
that permits the mediaplayer to see MyBook shared folders, with the pc turned off?

I'm not a linux expert, so pls talk easy !!!:)

I'm new to linux and trying to instal iptables so i can block certain ip address. I have my MBWE ported through my Router so i can access FTP outside my network. I had some guy in Texas trying to gain access through the "admin" username for 5 + hours on Sat. I blocked the port for a few hours to kick him out, but I want to get some program that I can make a black list so I can add ip addresses to block. Is IpTables the best way to go, or is there some other program that I can use?

Recommended filesystem for external USB HD

I'm adding an external USB HD to my MBWE. I formatted the drive as XFS (which appeared to be the native filesystem) using my PC and gparted. However, the drive does not mount and I get an error message "ufsd: failed to mount sdb1" and "XFS: unknown mount option [gid]. I have not been able to find any solution to this. I do not want FAT32 or NTFS on this drive. The MBWE is also unmodified (as yet) other than to enable SSH. If XFS is not the way to go, what is a recommended filesystem (other than an MS one, as previously stated)? Thank you.

my drive worked fine i could access it via my laptops then i found that i could add the feature pack so i did then i also so there was an update for the drive so i did that to

since then in basic mode it shows both default folders as user private with a red x at them but if i go to advanced mode they appear to be shared with all the protocols ticked green

i have tried all the resets and the rescue disk , it appears i have locked the folder permissions when using putty to get optoware on it or after the upgrade

anyone know any other tricks or commands i can try via putty as i have tried everything in the web interface

I have written a little PHP script, to accsess my files from the internet. But i have a problem with files larger than 2GB. I can't download them (404 not found). I looked up the specifications of the mini_httpd webserver here and they say they have a support for files larger than 2GB. Does anyone know how to modify mini_httpd to solve this problem?

Dumping the enclosure and using the HD

So, my MBWE I (1tb) isn't detected on the network anymore. The light won't turn on either, but I can still hear/feel the disk spinning. I called WD, and they told me I should send it to them for it to be replaced. Unfortunately, they also said they won't save my data, and I would have to go through a "data recovery company". It is the just the enclosure that is bad; I don't need my data "recovered".
I figure I can just take an older computer, give it a SATA card, and use the old computer as sort of a NAS in itself, and dump the dead enclosure. Is this a reasonable idea? How easy will this process likely be? I've got a lot of experience with GNU/Linux, but none with hardware. :) Does the data partition use ext3, or another fs? Has anyone else tried this?

I did an ipkg upgrade and it upgraded my of php and php-fcgi to version 5.2.11-1. Now my lighttpd server crashes every time it uses php-fcgi. My question is how do I downgrade to the previous versions? Is there an optware archive somewhere?

EDIT: I'm starting to suspect that the updated version of lighttpd/1.4.24 is causing the crashes. Anyone has the latest version of lighttpd working on his white light?

I am trying to use my MBWE as an svnserver and I was following a guide.
One step involved chkconfig but I get a chkconfig command not found.
I browsed around and found info that chkconfig would be in /sbin. I looked and its not there.
While browsing i came across the whereis command but using it, it too is reported as not found.

my path is /usr/bin:/bin:/usr/sbin:/sbin:/opt/bin

I have installed optware correctly I think (been able to download svn).

Any suggestions are welcome.

Hi all
Ok so I was just in the process of installing the features packs for my white light and on a whim clicked "check for firmware update". It found a new update and I had a quick browse online which indicated that it added time machine support. No big deal for me…I dont have the apple device. Anyway I did a bit more searching and they have added some great new features: Twonky has been updated to Version 5.1. New gui and better compatibility with dlna devices. Sweet. Icing on the cake for me is the addition of ctorrent client in download manager. It allows you to throttle the upload/download speed as well as end the torrent when certain conditions are met. Nice. Am looking at trying ctorrent client now. Version number is 1.01.14. Cheers

Sorry if this is a challenge.

Thought I'd give this a go as the hope of a quieter WDMBWE blue light 1.5TB was worth learning some linux for.

Struggled with getting ssh to work, and tried various methods. Ended up by accident installing web interface package on one link by accident.

Didn't want to leave my drive wide open so deleted the www folder and files, got rid of the extra users and tried to update the firmware with hope of going back to square one.

Firmware update failed and hence rebooted the drive….ended up now with no web interface and can't get into ssh!
Samba share still works and can see PUBLIC folder and the Mionet folder (logs in as 'guest' on mac…can I use this user account and then use su- ?.

Looks like ssh was working all along as i can get terminal going and ssh admin@[ip address of box] -v now prompts for a password after lots of ssh stuff.

Can't log in though as I've deleted my other users and can't find any password that'll work with admin? (tried root etc)

Any ideas? Not too keen on trying to rebuild drive from scratch as have already wasted too much time with this…know much more about linux than I did two evenings ago though!!!
Is there a linux trick for finding out which users there still are and will any of them have no password.

I'm trying to find which pack it was I upgraded to by mistake….

I trying configurate cups service but I have 2 problems.

I'm willing to create environment for cross-compiling programs for MBWE. I plan to use Scratchbox for this, but I'm unsure how to create (choose) toolchain (which version of gcc, glibc etc.)

I would ask those with better knowledge in this matter for some advices.

Win XP not connecting right to MBWE WL

Im running Windows XP on my laptop, i can see all folders on MBWE and can login to all "Public" folders fine, but when i have to put in UN and PWD it will login to some folders, but no all. It says that I cannot login with two users. Anyone have this same problem?

iTunes Server

I'm not sure I understand how the iTunes Server functionality of the MBWE works. Here is my setup:

MBWE I (White Light) with the following customizations:
- Installed prep_whitelight script (without crond changes)
- Installed CUPS
- Installed Transmission.

On my admin page it appears that the iTunes server is enabled.
My client machine is a MacBook Pro running the latest version of iTunes.

I placed some songs in the Shared Music folder, and when I launch iTunes it shows MyBookWorld on the left-hand side. Unfortunately, when I click on it I don't see any of the songs I placed in the directory. I don't get any error messages or anything, though.

Do I need to do something else? Did the customizations I made somehow break the iTunes Server functionality, or am I just doing something wrong?

I am planning on buying the My Book white light 1TB. But I want it to download, par, and unrar my nzb usenet files. I know that the blue ring My Book was very slow doing that (would take ages).
Is this changed in the new white light version. Is NZBget doing download, par and unrar? Who has NZBget running and what are experiences?

I have installed all the apps i need on my mybook, but there is still one thing that's bothering me,..
The 8 mb upload limit on the webserver/accesbook app.

Is there any way (keep in mind that im not that great in linux stuff :P) of increasing that number to arround 100 a 200 mb?

Cannot access mbw 1tb

Hi,

big problem on my mbw 1tb white lights. Since yesterday i cannot access the device.

The WD Discovery software find the name of the device, but configuration window didnt open because the page was not found. SSH is also inaccessible.
I wonder that the twonky software runs fine - i can access the web-configuration window with no problems. The software works and my dlna-tv can play media contents.

It seems that the device was resetted: It has no more fixed ip address, and white lights are on (which i had disabled earlier).

My configuration: A licensed copy of Twonky 5.1 and optware with Transmission. Both runs fine until yesterday.

What can i do to become access to the device? i only have a notebook with windows, no linux here.

LedControl : Switch Led Off problem

I just set up the Led Control tool, it works fine but when I click on Switch Led Off button, the MBWE leds switchs off, but after a while, leds switchs on…and I don't know why…

I would like the leds off until I click on Switch Led On button, how can I do that?

The lights come up and stay blue. What does that mean?

I can ping it. But neither SSH or HTTP is working. How can I enable ssh again??

Hi.
I was trying 2 weeks to get work vsftpd on mybookworld (blue rings) without any success. Happy that at least TeinturMan's acessbook works perfectly, it's a very good tool. But when trying anything to get work ftp i made SSH not working anymore. I tried with SSH enabling firmwares, but without success. In the log file i get is what i posted below. I think (but not sure) that the last line i added in /etc/inetd.conf (found it in some forums for vsftpd) created this problem. Is it possible, to restore/rewrite this file somehow without SSH, which does not connect?

Thank you for any help, i give up by myself, wasted so much time reading all the internet stuff without results (except accessbook), so the last hope are you.

Help Backing up WD WE II white light and recover bricked one

I have here two WD WE II 2TB RAID one out of the box and one is bricked.
Is it possible to bring the bricked one back to life with using the drives from the new one ?
How can this be done ?
Is it possible to this with mac os x ?
Can this be done by just doing a bit by bit copy from the new hd to the bricked one ?

web server 500 error

Hoping someone is able to help me figure out this conundrum.
I've followed the instructions at http://mybookworld.wikidot.com/accessbook by TeintruMan. My problem is that I'm getting a 500 internal server error when I try to open https:///
I can access the web server manager at https://:3210/ no problem
also I can see http://wdstorage:8080/ No Problem here as well
Most importantly I can see the output of https://wdstorage/index.php which contains the function phpinfo(). No Problem here even.
However when I type https:/// into the browser address bar and hit enter, I get a 500 internal server error. Go figure!

Entry of my /var/log/lighttpd/error.log file at the same time the 500 error is happening is thus:

Squeezebox server

Hi,

I bought myself a squeezebox duet and WD world book in the hope that they could be made to work nicely together. Unfortunately the squeezebox wants to talk either to something on the internet or its own server, which is annoying.

There is a linux version of the squeezebox software, including what is called a "perl source" version. Just wondering if anyone has tried it before I give it a go.

THe alternataive is to take the squeezebox back and get something that talks to twonkey.

I am worried that it will require some complex X stuff and not work at all. There is a precompiled version for a netgear NAS thoguh, which I guess has similar levels of ram/cpu to the mybook.

Anyway open to suggestions :D.

My BookWorld (1TB) died. Repair shop said that the two discs are fine (guess) and that only unit's system electronic is broken. The case is that they can not replace just electronic but the whole unit! But all I need is data. I don't care about this slow piece of …

The both disc are still spinning and I have a RAID1 configuration.

Can I just take one disc from the unit and plug it to a PC and copy my data to another location? What do I need for that? Can it be done from Windows machine?

I recently purchased a 1TB MBWE (white light) and have been messing around trying to get various hacks working. One thing I'm wondering: can the FeaturePacks created by TeinturMan work on a MBWE that has had the prep_whitelight script of frater's executed on it?

History: I was able to install the FeaturePacks on my 'virgin' whitelight and get the Transmission package up and running, but then ran into issues trying to get CUPS working, so I restored my firmware to start from scratch again. On my second attempt, I ran the prep_whitelight script and got CUPS up and running, but then when I installed FeaturePacks I got errors on the Configuration page of Transmission (could not find command ifconfig coming out of the Configure.sh script). After restoring the firmware again, I tried to do everything 'manually', but ran into problems trying to add /opt/bin to my PATH variable for configuring Optware.

So I've done a bunch of reading and discovered that prep_whitelight switches out the shell and does other things to make certain hacks work. But I am guessing this messes with the FeaturePacks which require things to be 'virgin' in terms of setup (using busybox as the shell, for instance).

So I ask: has anyone managed to use both of these tools at the same time? If so, was there a specific order of installation (FP first, then prep_whitelight perhaps?) or other configuration change you had to make?

External drive shutdowns

The basic project I'm looking to do is to create an ultra low wattage seeding box for Bittorrent (vs using my ultrabeefy PC). I've got a a 1.5 TB White Light Mybook (with the latest 1.00.28 firmware), that I installed Transmission on. Worked pretty well at seeding at 6-8 watts vs 260-400 watts for my PC (rated with Kill-a-watt). Next step, how to get it even lower.

Enter a 64GB SSD that I have. I was able to set up the first three partitions on the SSD, and get it to boot the box successfully using the methodology in the White Box unbricking thread. The problem I'm running into is that the 4'th partition (containing the data) isn't mounting. I can't use the unbricking method of imaging my good data partition from the 1.5 TB drive because it (obviously) won't fit on the small amount of available space on the SSD. I've tried creating the partitioning, formatting, factory reset, etc. and have not been able to get the DataVolume to mount.

Anyone have any ideas on creating the 4'th partition correctly so the DataVolume's mounted?

wget: command not found

Trying to understand where I may have screwed up, or why this would be. Got ssh access turned on, and in the process of trying to get Optware going, I attempt to use the wget command, and get the response in the title, "wget: command not found." I'm no Linux expert (I would almost classify myself as a newb), but in all the times I have used Linux, I can't remember any time that wget wasn't an available command.

I have the MBWE with blue ring, 500GB, firmware 02.00.18.

This is not a huge deal to me, as long as the drive continues to function. I just am tired of Mionet and I want to get rid of it completely. :)

I have the MBW I (I think?? bought it 1.5years ago) with a single 500gb drive.

Can I buy an extra drive to make it raid-1?? I want to backup the entire drive.

I read there should be an "Raid" option in the "Advanced" settings. I dont have this option… Maybe its only displayed when the second drive is installed?
Also, what drive should I get?

got serial access to white light 2TB edition single drive. i want to put debian armel squezze on it like i did with some buffalo devices. but where is the kernel? i guess at some non-filesystem space in the first sectors. does someone knows it?

Hello, my first post here

I got a 500GB version really cheap and was wondering why it was so cheap. Now I know, it is transfering the files at 3.4-4.5 MB/s !
I was wondering if there is a way to make it faster, at least a little?

What is in fact - factor of such low speed ? Slow CPU? Is there a way to overclock it? :) Or something

I really don't understand why they advertise as "gigabit" ethernet when it is closer to old 10 mbit ethernet… :(

Well, the summary just about sums it up. I tried to follow the tutorial, but it was obviously for an older revision of the drive.

Where is lighttpd.conf located? I can't seem to find it. I know all I have to do is turn it on…

Already have the feature packs manager installed, as well as optware.

MBWE II + 2 WD10EADS don't show in WebGui

I guys,

I just installed 2 brand new WD10EADS (1Tb Green) in a MBWE II (Blue ring) and after boot up I have noting under the "memory" tab that normally show the size available and total size!!

I follow the rescue procedure like I do in the past to rescue with old 500Gb. With the 500gb everything work like a charm but with 1tb nothing work, except the OEM 2.0.18 firmware update.

Anyways, is there somebody here that can lead me to make this thing running!!!

The dir isn't empty. If I try to change dir I get:

The vsftpd.conf is minimal and has no chroot. What am I missing here?

NFS /etc/exports file

I am trying to reconfigure NFS server by editing the /etc/exports file. But after reboot the exports file return to its previous content. Probably it rewrites by something during the reboot time.
I would appreciate any idea to prevent it.

MyBook World Edition, Blue Rings, On MAC OS X

I've got a MyBook World Edition, 1TB blue rings, and a Mac Mini with Mac os X 10.5.

I want to use the MyBook as an external hard drive on my Mac Mini. When I plug the MyBook directly to the Mac Mini via the Ethernet cable, it works. I can both read and write files to the MyBook hard drive. However, I would like it to be faster. I would like to be able to live stream movies from the MyBook to the Mac Mini. I can do this when I use the Ethernet cable between my Mac Mini and my Time Capsule - but not when I do it between the MyBook and the MacMini. It seems that the reading/writing between the MacMini and the MyBook is too slow.

What can I do in order to make it faster?

Would it help to format the MyBook to another file system - and how would I do that, if that's a possibility?

Backup transmission before firmware upgrade...??

I was thinking of upgrading my firmware for mybook but since I have already downloaded many torrents using transmission , I would like to back them up so after the upgrade restore and continue seeding. Is there really a way to do this? Is that possible by just backing up at /shares/internal , the directory(which is this??) that transmission keeps the torrent files??

What I’ve done to the mybook:
1. Enabled SSH
2. Enabled Rsync Server

I’ve installed cygwin on a machine running server 2003. I can ssh fine to the mybook and rsync runs fine from the 2003 server once I enter a password. What I’m trying to do now is do away with the need for me to enter a password every time I run rsync. I followed the instructions but I am still being prompted for a password.

It’s probably something simple but it has me stumped and any help you can give would be greatly appreciated.

Strange problem with copy

Hi.

I copy a video file (.avi or .mkv) from my internal hard drive to my MBWE. The copy completes without problems (no message from windows). But when I play the copied file from MBWE I get choppy playback and artifacts. This is happening to certain points in the video.

If I try to recopy the same file back to the internal hard drive the problems remain. But the source file plays ok. That means that the file corrupted during the transfer to MBWE. This is happening occasionally, not all the time.

Then, I used QuickSFV to verify the integrity of the files. I saw that sever files had CRC failed when I copy them to MBWE. If try to copy them again, then the copy completes without errors…

Is this a network issue? My MBWE is connected to a gbit switch.

Selling MBWE II

Ok so I'm planning on selling my MBWE II some time during the month after I get the replacement QNAP TS-419p up and running and I was wondering what the best way of doing it would be. My prefered place of sale will be a UK computer forum called bit-tech, so hopefully the buyer will know a bit of linux or wont be scared away buy it.

The question I ultimately have is if I sell it as an empty caddy would it be relativity easy for them to get the MBWE working again if I point them to this site? If its a right pig to do how can I shred my data on the drives and reset the drive to near factory conditions?
