As the title states, I am trying to use a folder share besides the default "/Shared Music" "/Shared Pictures" and "/Shared Videos" folders.

Some back story…
I was using this device back in the 2010s.
During this time I learned how to do the very thing I am currently asking about - which I remember involved using PuTTY to login using SSH and modifying some file so that the other folder share could be seen by Twonky. Worked great.
Then around 2021 I upgraded to a larger NAS. I did a "factory reset" of the MyBook, and put it in storage.

Fast forward to today.. I am wanting to start using it again. So I set it up, created a folder share and copied over a bunch of media files.
When I went to setup Twonky I quickly remembered that I had to jump though a bunch of hoops to get it to work as I wanted.
The sad thing is… since that was around 15 years ago… I have forgot the details on how to do it.

I remember I learned a lot about hacking the MyBook here on this site - so I returned to it to try to find the info on how to do so - but I have failed trying to re-locate the information.

So I am hoping someone here can guide me in the right direction.

Thanks in advance.

My BWE II had 2 original, 2TB files in it. Some years back I set them up as JBOD and recently, started noticing failures. Running diagnostics on it, i started to notice one of the 2 drives was failing.

I recently bought 2 new, 2TB files and decided to replace the drives there. I got all the data copied out and pulled the two original drives and put the 2 new drives in.

Now, when I power up the unit, I see a solid white at the bottom and a blinking white at the top. Not sure what this means. Any clue?

Also, how can I reset it? I can't access the web interface, I suspect due to the blinking light issue.

I'm about to exchange the default 1TB Cavier Green with a 4TB WD RED.

Question: how can I copy all data from 1TB to 4TB, while preserving timestamps and all other attributes?

I tried using the WD Copy Manger menu, and first copy all my data to an external SSD drive via the USB port of the WDWE. But unfortunately the drive could not be detected, so I cannot get the data in this way.

I have two, My Book World 2's—one is working fine and the other is not. I swapped the drives in them and it seems the casing for one of the units has gone back.

When I power it up, I see just the bottom segment of the lights light up; occasionally the just the top segment lights up (while the bottom segment stays on). I can't mount the unit/drives or access it from the browser (as stated above, putting the drives in the other unit works fines—moving the drives from the good unit to this one doesn't work).

Is there a way to diagnose what's happening?

Update 2022.10.07: Never mind, after extensive testing of the disk with smartctl and badblocks with no errors found, I am now fairly confident that the errors originated from failing electronics or SATA contacts issues in the WD case. Discarding and replacing with a new NAS.

Hi, and thanks for all the great help and knowledge about the WD My Book Live here that has helped me a lot over the years!!

The last couple of days my aging WBL(10+ years) has started eliciting new and odd behavior. Almost every night it ends up not being reachable anymore either by ssh, the web admin interface or any of the shares. It only responds to pings, and I have to cut and reenable power to get it back online again.

The actual hard drive inside my MBL is pretty new, around 6 months old, and the combination has been working well until the last couple of days.

The last messages from the logs before a new reboot typically are, maybe indicating something with the sata connection, which I am unable to interpret, find any information about or fix:

Sep 21 23:17:13 SviskeNAS logger: exit standby after 365 (since 2022-09-21 23:11:08.860949593 +0200) Sep 22 00:16:47 SviskeNAS kernel: ata2: Detect errors: DIAGN DIAGW DIAGX Sep 22 00:16:47 SviskeNAS kernel: ata2: Detect hot plug signal Sep 22 00:16:47 SviskeNAS kernel: ata2: Freeze port with 1 QCs aborted Sep 22 00:16:47 SviskeNAS kernel: ata2: Detect errors: ERRM DIAGN DIAGW DIAGX Sep 22 00:16:47 SviskeNAS kernel: ata2: Detect hot plug signal Sep 22 00:16:47 SviskeNAS kernel: sata-dwc 4bffd1800.sata: Detect recovered communication error Sep 22 00:16:47 SviskeNAS kernel: ata2: Freeze port with 0 QCs aborted Sep 22 00:16:47 SviskeNAS kernel: ata2: hard resetting link Sep 22 00:16:53 SviskeNAS kernel: ata2: link is slow to respond, please be patient (ready=0) Sep 22 00:16:56 SviskeNAS kernel: ata2: SATA link up 1.5 Gbps (SStatus 113 SControl F0310) Sep 22 00:16:56 SviskeNAS kernel: ata2.00: failed to IDENTIFY (I/O error, err_mask=0x40) Sep 22 00:17:01 SviskeNAS kernel: ata2: hard resetting link Sep 22 00:17:05 SviskeNAS kernel: ata2: SATA link up 1.5 Gbps (SStatus 113 SControl F0310) Sep 22 00:17:05 SviskeNAS kernel: ata2.00: failed to IDENTIFY (I/O error, err_mask=0x40) Sep 22 00:17:05 SviskeNAS kernel: ata2.00: limiting speed to UDMA/133:PIO2 Sep 22 00:17:10 SviskeNAS kernel: ata2: hard resetting link Sep 22 00:17:16 SviskeNAS kernel: ata2: link is slow to respond, please be patient (ready=0) Sep 22 00:17:20 SviskeNAS kernel: ata2: hard resetting link Sep 22 00:17:26 SviskeNAS kernel: ata2: link is slow to respond, please be patient (ready=0) Sep 22 00:17:27 SviskeNAS kernel: ata2: Detect errors: DIAGN DIAGW DIAGX Sep 22 00:17:27 SviskeNAS kernel: ata2: Detect hot plug signal Sep 22 00:17:27 SviskeNAS kernel: ata2: Freeze port with 0 QCs aborted Sep 22 00:17:27 SviskeNAS kernel: ata2: Detect errors: ERRM DIAGN DIAGW DIAGX Sep 22 00:17:27 SviskeNAS kernel: ata2: Detect hot plug signal Sep 22 00:17:27 SviskeNAS kernel: sata-dwc 4bffd1800.sata: Detect recovered communication error Sep 22 00:17:27 SviskeNAS kernel: ata2: Freeze port with 0 QCs aborted Sep 22 00:17:30 SviskeNAS kernel: ata2: hard resetting link Sep 22 00:17:36 SviskeNAS kernel: ata2: link is slow to respond, please be patient (ready=0) Sep 22 00:17:48 SviskeNAS kernel: ata2: SATA link up 1.5 Gbps (SStatus 113 SControl F0310) Sep 22 00:17:49 SviskeNAS kernel: ata2.00: configured for UDMA/133 Sep 22 00:17:49 SviskeNAS kernel: ata2: EH complete Sep 22 00:17:49 SviskeNAS logger: exit standby after 3032 (since 2022-09-21 23:27:17.132949579 +0200) Sep 22 03:00:16 SviskeNAS logger: exit standby after 9083 (since 2022-09-22 00:28:52.992950114 +0200)

I also noticed for the first time this message, where I was able to unmount and fix the data partition with fsck, but I am unable to forcfsck on boot the /dev/md0 raid partition:

Sep 21 16:02:23 SviskeNAS kernel: EXT3-fs warning: mounting fs with errors, running e2fsck is recommended

Just wondering if anyone here has experience with something similar, and whether it is fixable, something wrong with my hard drive, or if it is finally the end of the line for my WD MBL case this time?

Hello everyone, thank you for taking the time to read this. A recent electrical storm and a series of power surges made our Western Digital NAS nic no longer work. This has been an extremely valuable forum for helping others that have had similar problems.

I'm actually not really sure where to begin because I have tried so many different things already. The model number of my drive is WD10000H1NC-00. The partition I am trying to mount in Ubuntu is raid and has xfl file system. I have confirmed this by using the gparted app.

When trying to mount the partition, I get this error message: "mount: /media/mount: /dev/sdb4 already mounted or mount point busy."

Could someone please help us, we appreciate all help we can get.

Hi,
I just bought a 6 TB (2 x 3 TB) WD My Book Duo and I installed the WD Security, WD Drive utilities software. Everything works fine because the disk is recognized and I can write to the disk. I then wanted to protect the access to the disk with a password and I used WD Security to set a password. When I stop the WD My Book DUo, I unplug it from my PC, and plug it back in, the access to the disk is locked before password but when I write the password I just chose, WD Security displays the following error message: invalid password.
I tried to erase everything on the disk with WD Drive Utilities, reformat the disk and redefine a new password to pass, I still have the same error message and unable to access to my disk WD My Book Duo.

PS: my PC is on Windows 10

Thanks a lot for your help.
Thierry,

Hi all,

my head is smoking, I'm completely at a loss now. I've got an old 2TB MBWE (white light) that at some point lost its shares. The web interface still shows the two shares, but I can't access them from a Mac or PC. I disassembled the drive and put it into another WD external casing that I still had, and ran into the problem that the drive is encrypted (disk utility showed four partitions, but couldn't read any data). So I thought it's a better bet to put the disk back into the MBWE casing and try to access the data through SSH.

What I found:
- apparently, there is some sort of RAID set up, as the /dev/md0 to /dev/md3 are all mapped to /dev/sda1…4 .
- there is NO /etc/fstab file… is that an issue?
- all the small partitions are mounted, but the /dev/md2 partition which is mapped to /dev/sda4 doesn't mount.
- when I try to mount the partition, it gives me an Illegal Parameter error.
- apparently, the partition doesn't have a recognizable file system. When I do an e2fsck, I get an error about a bad superblock. If I try to use the backup blocks, none of them work.

So I reckon the only way to save my data would be to do some sort of corrupted partition repair, and that's where I got completely confused.

There's a tool called TestDisk which I wanted to install, but apparently the Linux version that's on the MBWE is super reduced and doesn't have any package installer other than IPKG, which doesn't know the TestDisk package. So I tried to install all sorts of other package managers, like OPKG and Pacman, but even they require some sort of basic package manager. I just ran from one rabbit hole to the next and have no clue if I'm actually chasing up the correct problem, if the drive itself is at all recoverable or if there are any other options that make more sense.

HELP! :)

thanks all
Da_H-Man

Hi Experts… i really need some detailed help here…
I took a 10 year old device from my uncle… i was able to update a firmware to 01.02.14… and i can see the drive on windows computer network…i can access the admin page too… but as this is too old, and WD has stopped supporting, i was wondering how i can make the best use of this… What i really need help with is -
1 - Can i install a simple 3rd party firmware tht would make it good to use with the features for current time?
1- Wht softwares with a file browser like interface i can use this for windows 10 and mac to access the files in the folder?
2- how do i setup the back up system? With what apps? i tried good sync, doesnt work too well.
3 most importantly how do i access it from an external network? None of the wd apps seem to work…
4 how do i access from iphone??
Guys i know it is a 10 yr old device… but i m sure i can find ways to make the most of it?
Point 3 and 4 are most important. The app listed in the admin page for external access is not supported any more… what 3rd party apps ca i use for backup, and external access?
i m not really a computer expert, but i can follow instructions pretty well :-) Also port forwarding could be an issue, but with some hand holding ..may be i can… i have this attchd thru LAN to a Netgear ORBI.
Thanks in advance for all the help

I got some old WD external boxes and found identifying exactly what they are a challenge. Here is what I think I have:
Part #WD2000HSU - two 3.5" bays, 1-usb 2.0 port (possibly the original MyBook Mirror)
Part #WDVBHxxxxxxx - two 3.5" bays, 1-1Gb RJ-45, 1-usb 2.0 port (possibly the MyBook Duo Live)
Part #I'll let you know - four 3.5" bays, 1-1Gb RJ-45, 2-usb 2.0 (rear), 1-usb 2.0 (front) WD Sharespace

Some ideas and observations. The Sharespace enclosure is quite nice and it occurred to me how it might house an Intel NUC or Raspberry Pi (replacing the unit mainboard). Has anyone considered using these boards on this unit with pin header cables? Now that we know how to open the MyBook boxes without destroying them, has anyone considered replacing the LAN or usb chip to increase its meager performance?

Now that my unrealistic notions have been exposed, let's get down to the practical:
I've said goodbye to Windows permanently and only run Linux distros. It would be helpful to get these up and running so can any of the boxes above be flashed to accept newer, lower power 5400rpm drives?

Max HD size?
Is there any? I plan a last big pimp-up to my 2-bay MBWE to really big space. By use of the various projects described here, I managed installations from scratch to fresh HDs quite some time ago, I dimly remember, I could not use 100% of the size. I think it was a limit of the volume manager. I am not bound to use md, but otoh this is the “natural” setup I would not like to disturb. I am not absolutely bound to mirroring, as I do proper use of saving important data, so I am not even sure I want it to be symmetric. I could go with a 1-4 TB "system" disk and an 8 GB additional data or something. In that case I would configure the system as single-drive and add sdb manually with ext3 or whatever.
Do you have experience concerning

limits of md

max size of supported disks in general

Workarounds in case there are limits

any shared knowledge or ideas welc0me!

Hi,

I am not sure what is happening, but copying files to the server using AFP (I use a mac) it is extremely slow after a reboot. Only Twonky at web http 192.168.1.53:9000 can access. Reset button pressing over 20-25sec not changing the static address to DHCP and not resetting name of the device :(
Thank you so much in advance for any help :)

Please help me connect to my WD My Book World (white light). I had access to this on my previous laptop but for some reason cannot access on my new laptop. I have tried using the WD Link app and also by using the IP address. I don't know how to set a static IP, not sure if that is the problem or not. We have thousands of family photos that I backed up to the MBWE before changing computers and I would really like to get them back.

Also…has WD stopped supporting this? Hours of searching their pages have turned up few articles about the MBWE, always redirecting me to the My Cloud. Any links I find that specifically refer to MBWE on the WD site end up being broken. Adding to frustration!

Thanks for your help!

Hi guys,

I've been struggling to use time machine with my MBL. After a bit of searching, I stumbled upon this page from WD (ARGH! new user, can't post links, remove the space before the .com)

wdc.custhelp .com/app/answers/detail/a_id/20732/~/my-book-live-and-duo-not-detected-in-finder-on-macos-%2810.12%29-sierra-and-higher

Which led me to think that that might be the issue. Are you guys being able to use time machine with your MBLs?

Is it possible to get a newer version of bonjour working, maybe through optware?

It might be a red herring, but it would be cool to be able to keep using my MBL as a time machine destination.

Thanks

Greetings!

I've got the yellow light on my WD MBLD 8TB version after a power outage, right now it doesn't start up. I am running RAID0 on it. I am trying to mount the drivers on a linux machine to recover data but there are so many spread out commands on the web and I am not able to find one list that could help.

Here you can find the screenshots from the disks which I could take on UBUNTU https://photos.app.goo.gl/dRZV7N8a5FbMBbkF7

I got a machine and connected both drivers on it using the SATA interface. I am running UBUNTU 18.04 from a USB disk in this machine. I was able to mount something (not sure if that is correct) however the DataVolume seems to be empty (which is not, for sure). So I called WD support - absolute run around/waste of time!

Next - tried out the debricking guides/scripts.

first without 'destroy' - Sorta worked, but slow and errors when I tried to update the firmware.

second with destroy' - This is where it went sideways… keep getting the \dev\md0 error messages ( stop and remove )… looked into this and tried all sorts of things without luck.

I have a VM with Ubuntu 16.04 and a USB / Sata adapter ( maybe this was my issue to start with ) connected to the 2tb drive.

Knowing enough to be dangerous with Linux and lots of Googling and re-tries I am still nowhere with this drive.

It's now fully empty/ no partitions…. nothing ( I know bad move probably)…. so basically what I am trying to do is get this thing up and running again - no existing data to worry about.

Last stuff I have tried without luck are these scripts on github for the MyBookLive

Possible? Next Steps?

Here is the output from fdisk -l

Disk /dev/sda: 40 GiB, 42949672960 bytes, 83886080 sectors Units: sectors of 1 * 512 = 512 bytes Sector size (logical/physical): 512 bytes / 512 bytes I/O size (minimum/optimal): 512 bytes / 512 bytes Disklabel type: dos Disk identifier: 0x4e3be6fa Device Boot Start End Sectors Size Id Type /dev/sda1 * 2048 79691775 79689728 38G fd Linux raid autodetect /dev/sda2 79693822 83884031 4190210 2G 5 Extended /dev/sda5 79693824 83884031 4190208 2G 82 Linux swap / Solaris Disk /dev/sdb: 1.8 TiB, 2000398934016 bytes, 3907029168 sectors Units: sectors of 1 * 512 = 512 bytes Sector size (logical/physical): 512 bytes / 512 bytes I/O size (minimum/optimal): 512 bytes / 512 bytes Disklabel type: gpt Disk identifier: B4E3B135-F4C4-4EA3-B82F-BF4FD9F0D041

Hello smart people.

I have a My Book World Edition II (White Light) 2x1TB that I have had problems with for many years. I am finally attacking the issues now.

I have finally offloaded all of the data and really really want to reset back to factory settings.

However, I cannot seem to access the webgui to do it. I do have SSH access, but am not finding a way to install the latest firmware (wdhxnc-01.02.14.img) as outlined by some of these other accounts on this forum.

Also, it seems like the the port for the webgui is not even listening (8001):

~ # netstat -l | grep 192.168.1.138 tcp 0 0 192.168.1.138:9443 *:* LISTEN tcp 0 0 192.168.1.138:9000 *:* LISTEN tcp 0 0 192.168.1.138:9001 *:* LISTEN udp 0 0 192.168.1.138:1030 *:* udp 0 0 192.168.1.138:53196 *:* udp 0 0 192.168.1.138:1900 *:* udp 0 0 192.168.1.138:1900 *:*

Interestingly, the two Twonky servers I have on this device are working just fine (9000 and 9001).

I restarted the httpd service with no effect.

~ # /etc/init.d/S55mini_httpd restart Stopping mini_httpd: OK Starting mini_httpd: OK ~ #

Thoughts, feedback, pats on the back are greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Hi to all,
I have a hacked MBWE with two disks that does a weekly backup of the most important files on an external attached usb disk (a simple usb wd my book disk formatted clearly in NTFS in case I have to attach it to the pc directly).

The problem I'm facing is that when sometimes I get into a "house power loss" the disks clearly restart but the external NTFS disk is in a "corrupted status" and the MBWE does not recognize it anymore unless I take the usb disk, attach it to the pc and do the standard windows scandisk.

Is there a way to do a scandisk directly from the MBWE in order to have a standalone system? My current system is not ideal, if I don't see there was a power loss I don't see the system is not making backups anymore…

Thanks in advance

After some years of working well (despite the occasional glitch) about a week ago it seemed to go badly wrong. I was getting no http service though ping was working. Soft switch on back would not respond so I powered it down and waited before switching back on at mains. Then it would not boot. Span up bottom light on then top light and back round loop. I removed drive purchased a sata to USB cable and plugged into pi. Recognised drive but no partitions. Tried lots of different commands but no joy.

Hdparm I reports the following:

/dev/sda:

ATA device, with non-removable media
Model Number: WDC WD10EARS-00MVWB0
Standards:
Likely used: 5
Configuration:
Logical max current
cylinders 0 0
heads 0 0
sectors/track 0 0
—
Logical/Physical Sector size: 512 bytes
device size with M = 1024*1024: 0 MBytes
device size with M = 1000*1000: 0 MBytes
cache/buffer size = unknown
Capabilities:
IORDY(may be)(cannot be disabled)
Standby timer values: spec'd by Vendor
R/W multiple sector transfer: Max = 0 Current = ?
DMA: not supported
PIO: pio0
Logical Unit WWN Device Identifier: 50014ee204e54aaf
NAA : 5
IEEE OUI : 0014ee
Unique ID : 204e54aaf
Checksum: correct.

Any ideas?
Hi,

So… I've got the before-mentioned WD product & I want to upgrade its inner storage from the existing 1 TB Green (WD10EARS) to 2 TB Green drive (WD20EARS).

I already managed to get a dump of the mybook.img file off the existing working 1 TB version. Using the dd command in System Rescue CD 5.0.0. distribution I managed to successfully unpack/clone everything to the WD20EARS drive.

So how do I expand that unallocated space after sda4 in order to make the OS "see" 2 TB of space & not the default 1 TB ?

In the console I tried running the command:

mdam --grow -size=max /dev/md2

And it didn't work.

So I tried issuing command:

mdadm --fail /dev/md2 /dev/sda4

mdadm --remove /dev/md2 /dev/sda4

Also didn't work, so I didn't even bother with the followup commands.

Any advice on how to solve this ? Do you need picture references ?

Thanks,
Dave
