Hi

I posted this on apple discussions , but not really resolved, any one else got this problem

I have two computers running 10.6.2, both backing up to a Western Digital World Book 1TB, running the latest firmware, using Time Machine.
This device supports Time Machine according to WD's web page.

One computer, within 24 hours of the initial backup, starts to backup large amounts of files, approx. 80Gb.
There is no way that I have made these amounts of changes, all prior backups are what I regard as typical
for the work I do, max 300Mb.

Excludes on this machine appear to be ignored.

The other computer backs up correctly.

Also, using an USB disk on the machine that makes big backups, the problem is not there, so its
one machine using the network drive, that has this problem.

Any thoughts?

Hello,

A few days ago I got my first World Edition with 1TB. I upgraded to the latest firmware - everythings´s fine. I am almost happy with it - I just would like to enter several URLs into the download manager at once. Let´s say I want to add 10 URLs from rapidshare which should download during the day. How I can I do this without change very much at the My Book? I found a hack here but it was for the Blue Rings version.

Thanks and regards…

I am planning to put aside 2 functional working WD500GB (Raid-0) in WD MBWEII and replace them with 2x1.5TB or even 2x2TB WD drives.
I don't want to put them in Raid-0 (non-Raid) or in Raid-1 (reduce capacity) nor as I understand correctly, can't be in linear-Raid (>2TB) because of limitation of the processor in MBWEII bluering being 32bit processor. So I am willing to use them as 2 independent drives with 2 PUBLIC shares. The questions are:

1) This is possible right?
2) Do need all 4 partions to be created and restored on each drive?

I have been reading up on most subjects regarding Backup Image, Restore procedure and Install Clean HDD, but seem to be lost & confused most of the time. Seem that some have try this by mistake by procedure cut&paste below and exactly is what I want. This would work right?

Thank you for reading….

--- cut & paste ----—-
In order to be able to use my 2 disks, i modified my file /etc/fstab to mount the /dev/sdb4 in /shares/internal2 which i created especially for (and created a PUBLIC2 inside to reconize the shared disk easily).

and i modified the samba /var/oxsemi/shares.inc configuration file adding :

[PUBLIC]
path=/shares/internal/PUBLIC
force user=www-data
valid users=www-data ANGEL
write list=www-data ANGEL
guest ok=Yes
[PUBLIC2]
path=/shares/internal2/PUBLIC2
force user=www-data
valid users=www-data ANGEL
write list=www-data ANGEL
guest ok=Yes

----- end cust & paste ------—

Alternative spindown and temperature script

I recetly had a disk failure, so I had to replace one of the disks. I put a new seagate 500GB disk, and the MyBook gets quieter. So I decided to remove also the other and mount the 2 Seagate. However, a side effect of not using WD disks is that the check temperature command with smartctl wakes up the disks (so smart_spindown is always waking up). I also saw that the temp monitor program output was always 0ºC. I do not know if this is normal or the original WD temp monitor works only with WD disks. So, I needed a custom script for temperature monitor.

After working with the existing ones for smart_spindown and temperature monitor, I finally wrote my own one based on them. It is called smart_control, and it includes:
- spindown
- temperature/fan control
- change blue ring leds
- monitor RAID1 status

For using it, you need to mount the ramdisk in /mnt/ramdisk, as explained in other posts, and locate there all files which can wake up the disks from standby (logs, locks, …).

You need also to disable the wdc temperature and leds programs in /etc/init.d (I do it in the start script of my smart_control script, so wdc programs are run the first time to do some initialisation, and then I stop them and start mine automatically).

This version has not been tested much, and some temperature thresholds may not be correct (only tested with my Seagate disks and in winter). Therefore, I recommend to use this script only to people with solid knowledge of MyBook hacking, because it may still have some bug which could cause temperature problems, for example.

Maybe it is useful for some people not fully satisfied with the WD tools and the existing custom scripts. If anyone make fixes or improvements, it would be great to make them available for all…

Here is the main script /etc/init.d/smart_control.sh

#!/bin/bash # # smart_control # # Script to manage the NAS temperature and disk spin-down # # Development partially reusing smart_spindown # ################################################################### # # Configuration # # Disk(s) to monitor. # If you have only one disk, leave DISK2 empty DISK1=sda DISK2=sdb # Temperature thresholds (celsius) TEMP_50=40 TEMP_100=45 TEMP_RANGE=1 TEMP_ALARM=50 # Time to keep fan working after disk spin down (in seconds) KEEP_FAN=300 # Spin down timer in seconds SPINDOWN_TIME=7200 # Loop frequency (time to wait in seconds) WAIT_TIME=60 # Output levels.
I have been trying to compile a kernel module (usbhid), to make mybook monitor a UPS over USB (so it can shutodown in case a power failure). I have found quite a lot of difficulties, which I finally solved, so I give some ideas here:

The best reference I got is:
compile sound support
which also refers to:
guide installing debian

When following those posts, consider also these points:
- You can do it in anylinux modern version, regardless the gcc compiler inside. No need to change the linux distro compiler (e.g., I did it with Ubuntu 8.04, gcc-4.3). The reason is that the buildroot will compile the specific gcc version with cross-compilation support.
- When configuring buildroot, set always soft emulated FP processor. Configure not to include any application, so it takes less time. The interesting thing is to compile basic tools and the applicable gcc compiler for arm cross compilation.
- If you compile applications, the easiest is to use all which comes in the WD source package. Just put all the buildroot archives inside buildroot/dl directory (so there is no download), and configure buildroot as in the original system, e.g. with FW 1.0.18 with gcc-3, and kernel 2.6.17.14. Important point is not to get the latest uClibc snapshot, but the version a specified version (leave empty and it takes default one, already indl, I think). If setting all correct, it compiles ok, except last steps of building the root, which is not necessary.
- Once you have the compiler, you can try to compile applications from source code, using the buildroot generated copiler and libraries. I have not done it, but maybe you need to touch makefiles to use correct elements. You can see how buildroot compiles applications to do the same.
- If you want to compile a kernel module, it is a bit more difficult, because you need to use arm gcc-4.1 compiler generated by build root. The main problem is that buildroot and uClibc evolve, and they do not support anymore old compilers gcc-4.1 and kernel. The following worked for me:
- Download the latest buildroot package and extract it. Maybe in the future it does not work, so instead of latest, take from buildroot site the one available as latest around nov-2009, which I used. The same for uClibc
- In the configuration, it is the same as for applications, except that you have to enable obsolete packages, and then select the gcc-4.1 version (in my case it was gcc-4.1.2). Take the latest snapshot of uClibc. Use the latest In the kernel headers, specify manually the version 2.6.18.1 (because kernel 17 does not have headers install kernel, so buildroot fails. It seems that using this version is ok.
- When you make, it takes quite a long time, because it downloads some packages and compiles big thing like gmp (I do not know why). At the end, it should compile until the erroor when creating root image, and hopefully the gcc-4.1.2 should be available.
- You can then go to the vendor/kernel sources provided by WD, set the path to the generated gcc-4.1.2 compiler and try. I could obtain my module doing this.

I hopt that with the original instructions and these tips someone with good knowledge of linux and compilation can get things to work…

noob question, never paid attention to this… and my transmittion is running 24/7 so I think It never sleeps but…

Is there a command for that ? check if it's sleeping or only looking the leds ?

A Tip, I saw people saying they are getting SSH attacks, I was too like everybody else, because they scan DNS sites for the port 22… so If you want to avoid getting those attacks just change your router port fowarding to something else from outside… like 2200 for example (that is not mine :D ) and I never got an attack again.

Cya.

Hello guys!

I was absolutely amazed by the great hacks described on the wiki! Everything works really well on my My Book (blue rings). After setting up Optware I started using Samba from its repository and implemented all settings I also use on my Debian system. No pain, it all worked immediately!

Sadly however, sometimes Windows XP clients seem to 'forget' their login credentials of the mapped network drives during the day, causing much distress at my office! Using Windows GUI nor command line tool net use (with or without persistent) makes Windows behave correctly. All clients need to reconnect to their network drives to regain access to the Samba shares. But in time the connection fails again…

Do you have any suggestions that may help me?

Thank you in advance!

Simon

smb.conf:

[global] workgroup = WORKGROUP server string = Samba server interfaces = 192.168.178.25/24 127.0.0.1/8 security = share guest account = nobody encrypt passwords = yes guest only = no config file = /opt/etc/samba/smb.conf smb passwd file = /opt/etc/samba/smbpasswd veto files = /.senvidData*/lost+found*/ log file = /opt/var/log/samba/log.all syslog = 0 max log size = 1000 [Admin] case sensitive = no strict locking = no path = /shares/internal/admin valid users = admin read only = no guest ok = yes [Projects] case sensitive = no strict locking = no path = /shares/internal/projects valid users = projects nobody read only = no guest ok = yes

I have replaced a failed drive (A) on a client's device, using a WD SATA drive. After I did this, I was able to get into the Web interface (as shipped, no hacks) and format the drive. Subsequently, the interface told me it was synchronizing, although the drives were not mirrored.

This process eventually timed out - at least, I can't access the interface, which was very, very slow to respond prior to this. I have tried resetting the device (per WD's Web site), but am still having issues accessing it.

The lights' flashing sequence is different from those noted on WD's Web site. I see the outer ring light go on and off, then it flashes an arc in each quarter of the ring, each flash being followed by the entire ring lighting again. The inner ring has a short arc lit around the 2 o'clock area. This doesn't change.

The other feature of this problem is that I can't power off from the front button - just by pulling the power cord.

If anyone can shed any light on this, I'd be most grateful.

Thanks,

Des

Hello folks,

I've bought a new My Book World II (New Edition , with white Light) recently (half a week ago) and installed it properly with NZBget, HTTP Server & CinedB Plugins. SSH was also activated to use that features. I created a STRIPE (RAID1) VOlume so i have 4,0 TB (exactly 3.6 TB) harddisk space.
Yesterday I tried to connect to my drive and nothing happened. I thought it to be in sleep mode or something similar, but nevertheless with the power on key it "booted up". However I still could not get any response from the drive - neither my router, nor my putty ssh connection works or shows any sign of it. Tried to soft-reset, but it stays with light turned on. The Network interface card blinks green.

What can I do to gain access again?

Hi,
I didn't know that the update process deletes directories like /root and /opt - otherwise I would have backed up these dirs and configured sshd to accept passwords…
What I did before update to secure my NAS in the internet: I configured authorized_keys for root to accept certificates then I disabled sshd_conf to disable password authentication:
PasswordAuthentication no
Now after the update the whole /root dir is empty and therefore no authorized_keys can be read for authentication / ssh auth for user root will fail.
I'm still able to login as a normal user since this dir is not deleted but there is no 'su' available to get root this way.

Does anybody have an idea how I can work around this?
- Maybe using the update mechanism?
- copying an 'su' binary and execute that?

Is there any backdoor to upload/overwrite files in /etc ?
Any file which is writeable for normal users and executed during boot?

Any help is very, very welcome!

thanks
calvin

I just hooked up my new drive, and after a bit of playing managed to create some folders on it to hold my various types of media, ie dvd iso's, video_ts folders, divx, jpegs, mov, avi etc. I'm also going to use it as a backup for documents etc.

I didn't use the included cd for discovery, but found the ip address from my router then just used the web interface. One interesting thing I noticed that when it was saving some settings and (I assume) rebooting, it would not load the next page. It turned out when rebooting is was assigned another ip address from the dhcp server on my router (WRT54GL running dd-wrt). Assigning it a static address fixed this.

My first question is about syncing. I have a 500gb drive on my main pc that I store my digital photos on in an "images" folder, and I want to have this directory sync with my "images" directory on the mybook so I have two copies and for other pc's to have access to them all the time. From what I have read the included backup software is slow and clunky. I am running XP on this particular pc, but my wifes laptop will also want to sync some folders, and it has Vista on it. Someone suggested using microsofts free SyncToy to do this, as it is fast as user friendly. I also see that there us syncing software on this site. I was also even considering running some simple batch files using xcopy or something like that. Suggestions?

Second question: one of the main purposes of this drive is to serve media to my Asus O!PLAY media server. I also plan on adding more networked media players for other sets, either another o!play, or perhaps the wdtv live or the onw patriot makes. My Asus unit plays anything I can point it to on my folders from networked pc's. Do I even need to bother with the media server component on the mybook? is it advantageous to do so?

Third question: can the drive be replaced if decide to put in a 1.5tb drive? If I hook up another terabyte usb drive to this can I then have it sync with the internal drive, like kind of a quasi-mirroring setup? If I get another mybook world edition drive for my network can I have the two sync up?

thanks!

Hello,
I recently bought my MBWE II and I am very happy with it :)

But I am facing one problem with the vsftpd configuration and after many hours of testing, searching and scratching my head, I am stuck.

I configured that local users has access to jailed folder and all works fine, but I would like to restrict the access to SSH for them.

I tried this:
1. Edit the /etc/passwd and change /bin/sh to /bin/false or /bin/true or /sbin/nologin. This block the SSH and FTP access, so it doesn't do the trick.
2. Edit the /etc/ssh_config to use the AllowUser, DenyUser, ..Group.. and etc, but none of them worked as expected, later I saw that this version of openBSD / openSsh doesn't support those.

Do you have any other suggestions that may help me define users that are allowed to login to the FTP, but not SSH?

Thank you in advance,

Best regards,

One more for the day… Sorry if this was already a topic - please help me with some link if so.

The question is what's your experience with the "My Book World Edition II"? http://www.wdc.com/en/products/products.asp?driveid=588

I have an 500GB MBWE I, and I'm planning to either upgrade this with bigger HDDs or buy the above MBWE II. Since there's not too much difference between the two prices, I'm open to buy the new one.

So:
- the most important: is this hackable? :)
- where can I find some technical specifications? Ideally information like CPU and memory (to compare if it's stronger than the MBWE I)
- any experience you've had

thanks, br

I saw a tutorial about how to run an rc script by pressing the power button and thought it would be really useful if I could install ipmitool so that when I press the power button it could turn on one of my servers or something. If anyone has any experience in getting ipmitool on the MBWE let me know. I would greatly appreciate it.

Hi all,

My 500GO MBWE (blue rings) refuses to let me in regardless of how I attempt to connect to it (web pages, smb, etc…). The dhcp server on my LAN router doesn't seem to have any entry for it, and the ethernet interface LEDs don't light up at all after the boot process. I've tried the reset procedure to no avail. Does it mean I need to trash it? I have some stuff on it that I wanted to keep so I'd really like to recover what I can if possible. According to one of the howtos on this wiki (http://mybookworld.wikidot.com/rescue-procedure) I am supposed to be able to extract the HD from its case and connect it to a linux computer. I happen to be running linux on my laptop for work, so I could do that, but it's a laptop, so there's no sata slot available for additional drives on it. Besides, I'm loath to open this laptop because it would void the warranty and it's a Company-owned machine. So how am I supposed to apply the rescue procedure in that case?

Any help welcome - thank!

L.

Hi,

I have a MBWE (Blue Rings). I set it up for Secure Volume (RAID-1) and created several shares. I was using these shares with no problem for probably almost a year. Now, all of a sudden with no configuration changes on my part, all of the shares that I created have disappeared. The only share that remains is the default "Public" share. When I go into Shared Storage Manager, I see "Device Name = MyBookWorld; Firmware = 01.01.18; Drive Status = Drive B Failed".

I'd like to see if I can restore my data. I am thinking that even if one drive (drive B) has failed, my data should still be on the other drive because I was using RAID-1, right? Does anyone think I might have some luck if I simply pull the two drives out of the MBWE and connect them to my PC using a USB external hard drive enclosure. Or is there a better way to go about this. I looked through the MBWE manual (admittedly very quickly) and I didn't see anything too helpful.

If anyone has any suggestions, I'd really appreciate it.

Thanks in advance,
Paul

My MBWE(BR) died yesterday. Its just clicking and spinning up then restarting. I can't log in either by web or ssl as it is not booting to the point where it asks for an IP. I am going to rip out the hdd and see if I can recover the data (which will mean buying another HDD big enough…). This is really annoying as I had just bought an Asus O!Play so I could watch all the carp I had stored on it!

Anyway, I read back through the forums and found that over the last couple of months there seems to have been quite a few failures. Has anyone considered that this might be a design fault caused by the lack of spin-down? How could we prove this to WD?

I have a Western Digital My Book World Edition II. The reason I bough it is to
have it as a FTP server, that way I can access files across the LAN and WAN. The NAS came
with MIONET, which in my opinion it simply sucks!! I want to give users the right to download
files across the internet, you could use that with MIONET, but first of all the interface
sucks, it requires JAVA, and it's slow. Plus, in order for me to give a user permission
to access a folder on my NAS, that person must first create an account on MIONET,
WHAT KIND OF CRAP IS THAT ???? Now, I am trying to find a way how to do this without MIONET.

The manual says you can do this but it says you must be an "advanced user", I called Western Digital
customer support and they said they can't provide me with that information because only
advanced users can do this and I must know how to do this myself. WHHHAAAT!!!

I can't seem to find anything on google so I am asking all of you if you can perhaps help
me set this up, I have already been able to access my NAS from the WAN by opening ports 21
on my router and enabling FTP on my NAS, however, it is extremly unsecured, Why? because
any person can simply type in my private ip address in their browser and somehow they
are able to access my NAS. I don't know how this happens, it's driving me nuts. really. I want
users to access my NAS with a password and username. Can someone Please help me with this problem,
I would gladly appreciate it. PLEASE HELP!!! Thank You.

Hey Guys!

I bought the WD World (2TB, white LED) a few days ago and I'm terribly disappointed of the Mionet service, so I tried to install the web server tutorial on my NAS. I'm quite a newbie in this kind of stuff, but I can follow instructions :-D.

Well, I activated SSH with the no-hack method. That worked out quite well. Afterwards I installed Teraterm on my PC and logged in with root/welc0me. This worked out too and I rebooted and tried to install the web server. That's the point where I got stuck. When I enter cd /shares/internal/public the box tells me that this folder doesn't exist or something. So i tried to install optware first. This was successful, too as far as I interpret that xD. I also tried to access my NAS via FTP. This didn't work at first, but worked out when I entered the main directory (/shares/internal/public). I saw the scructure and all the data on the NAS.

What do I have to do to make the web server work?

Thanks in advance

Banana_Split

P.S. I've done all the routing and so on with my father, so this is all fine. I can access my NAS via dyndns…

I'm having a problem where the white light mybook using Transmission (1.75 and 1.76) seems to freeze up every so often downloading a torrent. The light stops moving, and it's unresponsive. If I unplug the network cable, the white light will move again, but it's still unresponsive when I plug it back in. I have to take the power out entirely, then reboot it for it to respond. There's nothing in the logs that I can see, and when I reboot like that, I have to run the recheck on all the torrents (even if it is downloaded). There's no consistency over it, other than it seems to only happen when downloading a torrent. I've had it up for multiple days just seeding with no issues.

Any ideas on setting higher logging levels or anything that might help out in tracking down the problem? I looked around the net, and didn't see anything on verbose modes for logging or anything.

Any other thoughts on what's going on there? Thanks.

As suggested in http://mybookworld.wikidot.com/optware the way to autorun optware is using an S90optware in /etc/init.d/ with the code
#!/bin/sh
if [ -d /opt/etc/init.d ]; then
for f in /opt/etc/init.d/S* ; do
[ -x $f ] && $f start
done
fi

The problem with this way is that there isn't a similar script for shutting down optware (ex transmission) when shutthing down or rebooting white light. So transmission is not shutthing down properly.
What is the solution for this?

Another issue (minor) is that there is another S90 script in /etc/init.d/ which call the smbd deamon. Maybe the script for optware is better named S91.

Thnx for great support

I upgraded from Transmission 1.72 to 1.76 on my bluelight via Optware a couple weeks ago. It works perfectly right after starting up, but after a day or so it gets really sluggish and unresponsive. At that point, if I login and do a "transmission-remote -l", it sometimes takes a couple minutes to return the status, and it takes a similarly long time for web interface to load. At that point I'm pretty sure it has stopped downloading, and the program has crashed/hung up. I have it set up so that only one torrent is active at a time (the rest are stopped), so its not like I'm over-taxing the system.

Has anyone seen similar issues. I didn't have this problem with earlier versions. I now set up the box to stop and restart transmission daily. I might have to increase the frequency of stops and restarts.

Hey guys!
I've got the following problem: I want to create NFS exports for my USB drive(s) connected to my MBWE to make them accessable for my WDTV1. Samba is just too slow for that purpose. As you sincerely know, it's no problem to create NFS exports for the internal drive. The playback of files directly on MBWE goes flawlessly.
But as you might know, MBWE doesn't create NFS exports for USB drives. So I tried to create them myself through SSH. This went sort of fine until I tried to mount the drive on another computer or on my WDTV.
I edited /etc/exports and added this line:

/nfs/usb1-1.1share1 *(rw,all_squash,sync,insecure,anonuid=65534,anongid=65534)

After exporting (exportfs -r) exportfs -v shows the USB drive:

/shares/usb1-1.1share1 <world>(rw,wdelay,insecure,root_squash,all_squash,anonuid=65534,anongid=65534)

The share is listed under /nfs/usb1-1.1share1, too.
But there is absolutely no chance to mount the volume on another machine.
E.g. in Mac OS the finder command should be "nfs://mybookworld/nfs/usb1-1.1share1". The same command works for my other shares listed in exportfs.
Why not for the USB drive? Do you guys know any possibility to make MBWE share USB drives via NFS?
Thank you in advance.

Hello,

i'm trying to install a newer Samba Version on my WD 1TB White Bar by using ipkg. The reason for this is that i cannot connect to the samba shares of the WD using a Conceptronic CFULLHDMA Media Device with the latest firmwares (it works with older firmwares, till they changed the samba version)

It successfully installed the Samba version 3.2.15-1 to /opt/bin on the WD. Further i need a new samba.conf as the installer told me that there's a new format of it.

Thank you for helping.
Frankus

Hi guys,

Let me first start of by thanking everyone who contributed to this community. It was a great pleasure to read all the guides and get alot of information about my new toy without having to search for every step myself.

I've been playing with the MyBook for about a week now, I was trying to replace the two 500GB's I got it with for some newer 2TB versions. I'm not a linux expert, but I understood most of the guides. However, every thing failed for me somehow. Maybe I was doing something wrong, but most of the times I was following the steps very carefully.

I ended up putting back the original 500GB's, installing SSH onto them, and removing the S15wdc-heat-monitor so it would allow me to stick disks in it from another brand. Then I replaced the drives 1 by 1 and let the RAID1 system do the job of replicating. That sure worked, I was now running the MBWE with new disks as if it was with the 500GB ones. To increase the data partition, I exported the partition list table, edited it to the new size and imported it again (done on an external linux machine). After that I booted the MBWE and it didnt show the data partition. However, when I changed the "drive type" to RAID1 in the Drive management, the reformatting of the data partition took place and the data partition was successfully made. It showed me aprox. 1.7TB.

However, I decided to go for liniear anyway, as this MBWE is only used to duplicate my storage. But then I ran into the limits of MBR, because it was still showing a data partition of aprox 1.7TB. Is there a way to change the disk into GPT without whiping it? And if I decide to whipe it and change it to GPT, will it stay GPT while replicating or will the MBWE turn it back to MBR?

EDIT:

And if I decide to whipe it and change it to GPT, will it stay GPT while replicating or will the MBWE turn it back to MBR?

Tried it, but the MBWE turns it back to MBR..

Any thoughts ??
