Some back story…
I was using this device back in the 2010s.
During this time I learned how to do the very thing I am currently asking about - which I remember involved using PuTTY to login using SSH and modifying some file so that the other folder share could be seen by Twonky. Worked great.
Then around 2021 I upgraded to a larger NAS. I did a "factory reset" of the MyBook, and put it in storage.

Fast forward to today.. I am wanting to start using it again. So I set it up, created a folder share and copied over a bunch of media files.
When I went to setup Twonky I quickly remembered that I had to jump though a bunch of hoops to get it to work as I wanted.
The sad thing is… since that was around 15 years ago… I have forgot the details on how to do it.

I remember I learned a lot about hacking the MyBook here on this site - so I returned to it to try to find the info on how to do so - but I have failed trying to re-locate the information.

So I am hoping someone here can guide me in the right direction.

I recently bought 2 new, 2TB files and decided to replace the drives there. I got all the data copied out and pulled the two original drives and put the 2 new drives in.

Now, when I power up the unit, I see a solid white at the bottom and a blinking white at the top. Not sure what this means. Any clue?

Also, how can I reset it? I can't access the web interface, I suspect due to the blinking light issue.

Question: how can I copy all data from 1TB to 4TB, while preserving timestamps and all other attributes?

I tried using the WD Copy Manger menu, and first copy all my data to an external SSD drive via the USB port of the WDWE. But unfortunately the drive could not be detected, so I cannot get the data in this way.

When I power it up, I see just the bottom segment of the lights light up; occasionally the just the top segment lights up (while the bottom segment stays on). I can't mount the unit/drives or access it from the browser (as stated above, putting the drives in the other unit works fines—moving the drives from the good unit to this one doesn't work).

Is there a way to diagnose what's happening?

The last couple of days my aging WBL(10+ years) has started eliciting new and odd behavior. Almost every night it ends up not being reachable anymore either by ssh, the web admin interface or any of the shares. It only responds to pings, and I have to cut and reenable power to get it back online again.

The actual hard drive inside my MBL is pretty new, around 6 months old, and the combination has been working well until the last couple of days.

The last messages from the logs before a new reboot typically are, maybe indicating something with the sata connection, which I am unable to interpret, find any information about or fix:

I also noticed for the first time this message, where I was able to unmount and fix the data partition with fsck, but I am unable to forcfsck on boot the /dev/md0 raid partition:

Just wondering if anyone here has experience with something similar, and whether it is fixable, something wrong with my hard drive, or if it is finally the end of the line for my WD MBL case this time?

I tried to mnt the drive but I am getting this error mount: /mnt: can't read superblock on /dev/sdb

I guess this is could be because the drive is encrypted but im not sure.

I setup wrong shell for root user.

Default is /bin/sh, and i want switch this to bash, installed bash but write /etc/passwd file:

root:… .. …/root:/bin/bash

Right shell line: /opt/bin/bash no i cannot login root, and sudoers not set, what i can do?

i see backup file: /etc/passwd~ and there is working /bin/sh shell, can i restore this?

How i can edit /etc/passwd file WITHOUT root access ?

Or how i can setup ssh access again, if this is set root password and shell to default ?

I'm actually not really sure where to begin because I have tried so many different things already. The model number of my drive is WD10000H1NC-00. The partition I am trying to mount in Ubuntu is raid and has xfl file system. I have confirmed this by using the gparted app.

When trying to mount the partition, I get this error message: "mount: /media/mount: /dev/sdb4 already mounted or mount point busy."

Could someone please help us, we appreciate all help we can get.

How - Corrupt files from downloading them
(They are all over, and can still be found, dropbox, links here, the wayback machine etc..)

I have found - RAR downloads ->
Most contain all first three partitions as Bunzip format, seems that Some all 3 are good though reports of Some w 3rd partition corrupt ?, most importantly I found that the rescue.zip file in ALOT of them was 0 bytes (so wasn't right, and would look like it wrote something ok, but is not bootable

I have found - ZIP dounloads (IE dropdox)
These contain the first two partitions as BunZip format, and the 3rd and 4th format as .tar.gz archive
(IE partition creation and restore files is not same as original "Rescue" guide )

(**If anyone found in the Forums/Mess the guide that belongs with the files (2 BunZip , 2 TarGzip ) type then possibly some others might save some time..

I have the native 500GB Single Disk Model, I had been able to make the Dual model boot to 2.18 firmware and see both drives, but I seem to have goofed it up..

If I get it back then I will have images for that one too..

my head is smoking, I'm completely at a loss now. I've got an old 2TB MBWE (white light) that at some point lost its shares. The web interface still shows the two shares, but I can't access them from a Mac or PC. I disassembled the drive and put it into another WD external casing that I still had, and ran into the problem that the drive is encrypted (disk utility showed four partitions, but couldn't read any data). So I thought it's a better bet to put the disk back into the MBWE casing and try to access the data through SSH.

What I found:
- apparently, there is some sort of RAID set up, as the /dev/md0 to /dev/md3 are all mapped to /dev/sda1…4 .
- there is NO /etc/fstab file… is that an issue?
- all the small partitions are mounted, but the /dev/md2 partition which is mapped to /dev/sda4 doesn't mount.
- when I try to mount the partition, it gives me an Illegal Parameter error.
- apparently, the partition doesn't have a recognizable file system. When I do an e2fsck, I get an error about a bad superblock. If I try to use the backup blocks, none of them work.

So I reckon the only way to save my data would be to do some sort of corrupted partition repair, and that's where I got completely confused.

There's a tool called TestDisk which I wanted to install, but apparently the Linux version that's on the MBWE is super reduced and doesn't have any package installer other than IPKG, which doesn't know the TestDisk package. So I tried to install all sorts of other package managers, like OPKG and Pacman, but even they require some sort of basic package manager. I just ran from one rabbit hole to the next and have no clue if I'm actually chasing up the correct problem, if the drive itself is at all recoverable or if there are any other options that make more sense.

and discovered with a local "rsync" test that it was not the network the problem…

then I took a look at dmeg logs and found "advices" to do a "fsck" to the disk,
what I think I suceed, but maybe not on the good one, because I still have the same message in the logs.

is there a known way to perform a disk cleaning (i think that some hard reboots put some trouble in some disk files….)

I followed online tuto linuxuprising —> how-to-force-fsck-filesystem

to do and verify that fscl had been performed on /dev/md1 with sucess.

As a summary, i ask you if it's possible to add a MQTT broker/server in Optware packages, like Mosquitto.

Some ideas and observations. The Sharespace enclosure is quite nice and it occurred to me how it might house an Intel NUC or Raspberry Pi (replacing the unit mainboard). Has anyone considered using these boards on this unit with pin header cables? Now that we know how to open the MyBook boxes without destroying them, has anyone considered replacing the LAN or usb chip to increase its meager performance?

Now that my unrealistic notions have been exposed, let's get down to the practical:
I've said goodbye to Windows permanently and only run Linux distros. It would be helpful to get these up and running so can any of the boxes above be flashed to accept newer, lower power 5400rpm drives?

I am not sure what is happening, but copying files to the server using AFP (I use a mac) it is extremely slow after a reboot. I have 2 identical MBLD and
I used to spend around 15 minutes to copy a 20 GB to them. After the reboot it is talking about 2 hours (the second device is still normal).

I ran a top command on the slow device and here it what I can see:

I have a second, identical, MBLD that does not show that flush-9:3 ( which seems to be taking a lot of my memory in the first device - code above). What can I do to solve this problem?

Also…has WD stopped supporting this? Hours of searching their pages have turned up few articles about the MBWE, always redirecting me to the My Cloud. Any links I find that specifically refer to MBWE on the WD site end up being broken. Adding to frustration!

I've been struggling to use time machine with my MBL. After a bit of searching, I stumbled upon this page from WD (ARGH! new user, can't post links, remove the space before the .com)

Which led me to think that that might be the issue. Are you guys being able to use time machine with your MBLs?

Is it possible to get a newer version of bonjour working, maybe through optware?

It might be a red herring, but it would be cool to be able to keep using my MBL as a time machine destination.

WD MyBook World Edition, White light

In a fit of stupid, I rm'ed my etc/init.d/S90smbd script. I know. I'm laughing too.

Are there any kind souls who would post their S90smbd script for me?
Any other recovery help/mockery would be appreciated too.
Obviously, I'm not as smart as I thought I was!

Here's what I have already tried to recover from this:

• samba update from this wiki (mybookworld<dot>wikidot<dot>com<slash>samba-update)
  • Sadly, the ipkg installed scripts don't seem to work
  • and all the instructions are referencing the original file, which I don't have anymore

• full factory reset.
  • Sadly, this does NOT restore the original factory fs

• grepping the source code from WD
  • There are references to it in the make files, but not the actual file

• Googled as hard as I could

Here's what I don't want to do, and why I'm begging for help:

• Spin up the toolchain to do a cross-compile in the hope that it will generate this file.
  • Honestly, I'm guessing there is a chance that it was not included in the source.

on 01.01.18 its Works fine, but on 02.00.18 the HD power off and the blue lights blinking.

I check the storage, and see after update its lost settings, in external case I change

gedit sda1/etc/fstab Change line 10 to say "/dev/md4 " to "/dev/sda4"

the storage return, but the HD still shut down and front leds blink.

I dont find any solution.

Its Works fine and I enable the SSH to future explorer.

The problem is the Ethernet LED, the LAN Works, I access on browser, but the LED dont work, dont blink, nothing.

I update the FW 01.01.18 to 02.00.18, and Ethernet LED still off…

Its a soft or hardware problem?

I've got the yellow light on my WD MBLD 8TB version after a power outage, right now it doesn't start up. I am running RAID0 on it. I am trying to mount the drivers on a linux machine to recover data but there are so many spread out commands on the web and I am not able to find one list that could help.

I got a machine and connected both drivers on it using the SATA interface. I am running UBUNTU 18.04 from a USB disk in this machine. I was able to mount something (not sure if that is correct) however the DataVolume seems to be empty (which is not, for sure). Please find the steps I tried below.

I have MyBookLive 2TB which was acting up - no more dashboard access, by I could see the NAS from my Win 7 machine…. So I called WD support - absolute run around/waste of time!

Next - tried out the debricking guides/scripts.

1. first without 'destroy' - Sorta worked, but slow and errors when I tried to update the firmware.
2. second with destroy' - This is where it went sideways… keep getting the \dev\md0 error messages ( stop and remove )… looked into this and tried all sorts of things without luck.

I have a VM with Ubuntu 16.04 and a USB / Sata adapter ( maybe this was my issue to start with ) connected to the 2tb drive.

Knowing enough to be dangerous with Linux and lots of Googling and re-tries I am still nowhere with this drive.

It's now fully empty/ no partitions…. nothing ( I know bad move probably)…. so basically what I am trying to do is get this thing up and running again - no existing data to worry about.

Last stuff I have tried without luck are these scripts on github for the MyBookLive

I’ve a Old My Book World Edition White Light 1To, and i can access it with http via admin web ui but i c’ant access shares.

I found an error on volumes :

I have a My Book World Edition II (White Light) 2x1TB that I have had problems with for many years. I am finally attacking the issues now.

I have finally offloaded all of the data and really really want to reset back to factory settings.

However, I cannot seem to access the webgui to do it. I do have SSH access, but am not finding a way to install the latest firmware (wdhxnc-01.02.14.img) as outlined by some of these other accounts on this forum.

Also, it seems like the the port for the webgui is not even listening (8001):

The problem I'm facing is that when sometimes I get into a "house power loss" the disks clearly restart but the external NTFS disk is in a "corrupted status" and the MBWE does not recognize it anymore unless I take the usb disk, attach it to the pc and do the standard windows scandisk.

Is there a way to do a scandisk directly from the MBWE in order to have a standalone system? My current system is not ideal, if I don't see there was a power loss I don't see the system is not making backups anymore…

I just bought a WBL 2TB 2nd hand, and the disk is empty but, it shows 4GB occupied, where that data?

I changed, by mistake, into "/etc/passwd", the root shell of "/bin/sh" to "/bin/bash"
Now I can not access by SSH as root

I have tried several methods (like creating a symbolic link for "/bin/bash" to "/bin/sh") but the admin user does not have privileges to make the changes I need.

Is there a way to recover access to root without deleting hard disks?

So… I've got the before-mentioned WD product & I want to upgrade its inner storage from the existing 1 TB Green (WD10EARS) to 2 TB Green drive (WD20EARS).

I already managed to get a dump of the mybook.img file off the existing working 1 TB version. Using the dd command in System Rescue CD 5.0.0. distribution I managed to successfully unpack/clone everything to the WD20EARS drive.

So how do I expand that unallocated space after sda4 in order to make the OS "see" 2 TB of space & not the default 1 TB ?

In the console I tried running the command:

mdam --grow -size=max /dev/md2

And it didn't work.

So I tried issuing command:

mdadm --fail /dev/md2 /dev/sda4

mdadm --remove /dev/md2 /dev/sda4

Also didn't work, so I didn't even bother with the followup commands.

Any advice on how to solve this ? Do you need picture references ?
