I bought my single-disk 1TB MBWE yesterday and have a question.
What hacks/apps do I need to install (preferably as few as possible) to be able to….
1. Access the files in the different shares (created in the default WD web tool) over the Internet.
2. Stream video in *.avi and *.iso format and play it with VLC on remote computer via the Internet.
3. Stream MP3 and play it with WinAmp on remote comuter via the Internet.
I do not want anyone else to be able to access anything, I'm not looking to share my stuff, just want to access it. (w/o mionet)
Ideally, I'd like to be able to access the files "windows style" just like a mapped network drive on the remote computer.
Is VPN the solution or AccessBook? As far as I know I can't execute files from within a FTP client on a Windows machine and have it stream the movie with VLC.
I'd like to be able to take my laptop with me to a hotel room and just playback a movie located on my MBWE at home without downloading it… (assuming I'm on a 100Mbit Internet connection in the hotel).
What do I need to do to be able to do this?
(No lengthy step-by-step answers needed, just tell me which hacks/apps suits me best and I'll figure out how to install them myself.)
EDIT: Is SSH tunneling the solution for my problem? Using the Microsoft Loopback Adapter on the remote machine to access the data in a windows file sharing manner. It's described here (I've not tried it yet): [http://www.security-hacks.com/2007/05/18/tunneling-smb-over-ssh-secure-file-sharing]
Does this mean all I have to do is to enable SSH or do I have to change something with lighttpd too?
I read somewhere that file transfers (and I suppose streaming too) is slower using SSH. Is there a better way, maybe using FTP or sFTP?
(note: streaming the files are more important for me than being able to just download them)
