I was reading the different post, procedures, etc. and I was pretty exited on all the additional uses of my WB.
Today I have been monitoring my WB performance and it is swapping like crazy. The Real memory is almost all used and a large chunk of the VM is also being used. I looked at the processes consumming the memory and they were several Samba smbd running.
I am not sure what exactly they are doing as I don't know how to identify the requestors. The only thing that I can say is that it is slower than normal.
This made me think if all this effort is worth it.
I have been thinking that I could put a system together using an old case and put a small mother board with 2GB of memory (6 SATA ports and RAID capabilities running Linux on it. This way I could have all the SSH, Web server, Mail server, SFTP, etc. apps running on it and using it as a more powerful file server. I could even add more than one network card to increase traffic if needed.
I think I could buy the Motherboard, processor and memory for close to $100.
If I do this, is there any advantage or using my WB as a NAS versus a dedicated server as a NAS?
Thanks in advance for sharing your knowledge,
