My main reason for messing around with my perfectly good working MyBook WD I 1TB is that I want it to stay spinned down as much as possible when I'm not accessing it. I'm not very familiar with Linux so please forgive me if my questions seem stupid… :)
Anyway, I have not done any modifications yet, but plan to do the smart spindown thing. But, since upgrading to firmware 2.00.18 a while ago I have noticed that the unit actually DO spin down from time to time. I'm not sure how long it waits, and if I check on the unit at a random time (when there are no connections to it active) it is spinning more often than not, but as I said, not always! This is a good thing I suppose, but my concern is this: in addition to shutting down processes that access the disk when it's not neccesary, I also want more controll over the spinddown time so I want to do the smart spindown hack anyway. But what do you think, do I risk that the smart spindown script conflicts with the now obviously working spindown logic already present on the unit (since the firmware upgrade)?
I also wonder if you can tell me how big (according to your oppinion of course) the risk is of damaging the unit from messing around with these scripts… I don't wanna loose my data (much of it is backed up, but not all)!
Thank you!! :->
