Hello everbody, I also tried to hack my MBWE. I followed the instructions on this site and also the site from Martin Hinner. I always end with the message" No new firmware available". I read that I have to reboot and try again. But how many times do I have to try? I rebootet dozens of times with no luck. Always the same. Its a little bit frustrating. Has it maybe something to do with the newst firmware? Before I found this site I upgraded the firmware. Would I be luckier with an older fimrware? If so, how do I get the older firmware back? Any other way to flash the new firmware? Any other things I have to take in account? I know there are a lot of people here asking the same question again and agian but except this site ther are hardly any informations to find on the intetnet. And as I said it is annying to reboot all the time with the same frustrating result. There must be some difference because it works with some people and it does not with others.
Well, for one thing, check to see if it actually did install.
I had the same problem before. It keep saying there is no new firmware or when I did get it working it says it can't download.
I suppose that mybook main software is funky. I checked and indeed it downloaded and install.
The next step you should to make sure it works is by using PUTTY and getting into the mybook. If that works, then you pretty much had done the steps correctly.
Just go on the left bar and click on FIRST STEPS.
Follow #1. with the link it provided to put in your url. After you have updated, regardless if it says it install or not. Just reboot.
On #4, it says to log in to ssh. Well, this is where it gets confusing. It didn't mention that you need to download PUTTY or any client software to go into root from ssh.
If you have log into ssh. Then your install had work and you can continue to proceed forward with your other hacks.
Oh.. One more thing, I have come clean. The first step in "enabling ssh" did tell you to get a ssh client shell, which means you need some sort of software to get into ssh. But I guess as a newbie to linux, we don't really understand that. It did provide a link to that explains what a clinet shell, but that stuff is too overwhelming as a newbie and with our enthusiasm as a new owner, we somehow didn't calm down enough to read the whole thing over. Also, by doing so, it had giving you the option to the multiple client software that is available out there, that way it is not bias to one specific software, since linux is an alternative os to microsoft! :P
Well, perhaps if they spoon feed you with just using PUTTY and provided a download link to click that, then confusion would be less likely. Also, I guess that would stop the whole revolutionize idea of free of chosing, I suppose.
Anyhoo, I guess for your sake, just try PUTTY and once you get your hacks going, you can go back and use something else of your liking other than PUTTY to get into ssh.
thank you for your answer. I also read that sometimes it is installed although the message tells you otherwise. Thats why I checked with PUTTY after a couple of reboots and trials. But there was neither a log file in my public folder (as it should be if I understand correctly after completing this test procedure what I also tried a couple of times) nor was I able to get acces by PUTTY. I think I tried a lot before. Thats why I posted here because nothing was successful. Is the firmware version numer still the same after the hack?
