I have a WD My Book World Edition 11 1tb NAS and like so many others I am still experiencing great difficulty accessing it on a regular basis.
My Set Up
Broadband connection from Sky into a Wireless Net Gear router. I limit the IP range at the last block to 200 on my LAN
I have the WDMBII wired into the router along with an X Box 360
I have a windows XP desktop, a windows vista laptop and an iMac all connecting wirelessly to my router for shared internet access and file sharing
The My Book I set the ip to 192.168.0.205 on my router
I have enabled permanent SSH and use Putty from my windows desktop pc to configure some of the Linux setting files
I can access the MyBook’s graphical interface from internet explorer and have set up 3 users all with read and write access
I have disabled MioNet on the drive and do not use the software provided
I have followed various instructions on the internet for setting the shares.inc file and the smb.conf (samba settings) including allowing write access for all my user accounts including the www-data account
I normally get 2 links appear in My Network Places and I usually map one to a drive letter X
And for a period of time I usually have read and write access for the duration of my session, as soon as I restart my PC the next time, either I lose the link altogether or when I try and open the folders I get permission denied messages.
In order to gain access again I have to restart the My Book from the large circular button on the unit.
In the end I installed WinSCP and connect every time through my SSH user, however it would be nice to get permanent write access without having to keep restarting the MyBook like how you should be able to
What am I missing or doing wrong; any help would be greatly appreciated
