I have an idea for an easy way to accomplish this task. I've been reading the instructions for the 1st generation mybook and they require heavy linux knowledge and alot of effort/time. Most people including me do not have linux installed and the skills.
Being a windows user I would suggest the following way to backup:
1) Using a free hex editor that supports reading physical disks, read the first 3gb of data. This would contain bootloader, mbr, partition tables, mac, etc.
2) The file could be zipped down to maybe 300MB (if there is no other data on the disk)
3) The restore procedure would be the oposite. Optionaly the user could find/replace the mac address using the hex editor.
Please correct me if i'm wrong but this procedure is alot simplier than the linux one if it works. I cannot try it because I have already modified the system quite a bit.
If anyone has an untouched mybook white edition, it would be nice if he could upload this file
