I have the 1TB Whitelight and need to upgrade Twonky to work with my DNLA TV. Has anyone else tried this? How would one go about such a thing?
i am interested in it as well…
i have twonky 4.4.10, i think, what about you?
did yout try it to stream mkv with it?
Mine came with v4.4.9 which is not compatible with my Sony Bravia (which won't accept MKV anyway) I have the latest firmware from WD but its not updated the Twonky server (i need 4.4.17 or higher for Bravia support)
How you add custom locations?
for example, I make a folder called movies and want to share this.
in the web gui of twonky it just shows 3 folders and wont let me access any other folders i have made.
I came across the config file after i bricked my first 1TB white light but not really keen in messing with anything since i bricked my first one.
If you create a share "Movies" then in the Twonky config page type "./../Movies/".
Twonky seems to have been set up to scan only subfolders withing "/shares/Public/". Any share you create will be at "/shares/myshare/". To scan "myshare" you have to go back one directory i.e. "./.." and then add your share.
Same problem here, bought mine WD MyBook WE (White light) yesterday to add to my Sony Home system.
It still has Twonky version 4.4.9w on it. From ver 4.4.16 is supports Bravia TV's. (at the moment ver 4.4.18 is the latest)
I need to update but don't know how.
I am totally unknown with Linux.
Please, Please Help!
NLW
I managed to make a safety copy of the factory installed twonky by copying the entire twonky directory to the shares/Download directory.
and in windows I zipped then the entire map to a safe place.
But how about the license key? Where can I find it? It's not in one of the ini files!
Or, If I copy the new version of twonky over the existing, do I have than a licensed twonky or do I start with 30 day trail?
How do I Update from 4.4.9 to 4.4.18???
I need Help Badly.
Im looking for a work around for problems Im having streaming video files to my PS3
Ive used DVD rip with some success and it rips Video_TS and Audio_TS folders
Some of my DVD's dont have that menu structure and are just Video_TS when I rip them using anydvd they are problematic when streamed
Audio language will change when the chapter changes and the commentaries will kick in on some
I hoped a Twonky upgrade would help
Its a shot in the dark I know
But seems no-ones got an idea on upgrading the Twonky !
I think for most of us, waiting for Western Digitial to include a later version of twonkymedia in the firmware is the only way an upgrade will occur.
You should be able to get the current version to work well enough with your PS3. I have no problems playing DVDs on the PS3 and if you want to preserve AC3 sound (surround 5.1 say) then retaining the files as VOBs works best. Another format that can cope with AC3 on the PS3 is m2ts, but this version of twonkymedia struggles with this file format with skipping and fast forwarding tending not to work.
Use a program like DVD Decrypter in file mode and capture just the main movie in an unsplit VOB. Streaming from MBWE file sizes in excess of 4GB is no problem. DVD Fab is another program I have used successfully.
If you want to encode, then Handbrake or Mediacoder both work very well. However, the best file format that works with the current twonkymedia version is an mp4, with h264 video High level 4.1 and resolution no higher than 720x576 (which is stretched to your choice of either 4:3 or 16:9), with stereo AAC of 48Hz. The PS3 is very finicky with mp4 files, so I haven't explored much beyond this specification, opting instead for m2ts files. Don't forget to deinterlace (select decomb in Handbrake or Choose YADIF filter in Mediacoder under video effects) if you encode.
If you watch a few movies, then it might be best to install tversity on a PC that works very well with the PS3 and works supurbly with all files I have tried (VOB, mp4 and m2ts) with all functionality (fastforward, skip etc.) intact.
In desperate need of the upgrade too…
If anyone has any ideas on how to do this please let us know, or even personal message would be even helpful.
Finely I got it working!!! problem solved!!!
Without the knowledge of Linux!!
Now I have version 4.4.18 on myBook World Edition White light and have full support for my Sony Bravia z5500 TV..
The only bad thing is, that i have to purchase a license key. Its now a trail version.
This is what I have done:
Download the new twonkymedia version.
(In my case its version 4.4.18. For Sony Bravia support it must be greater than 4.4.16.)
Do not download the "Linux ARM little" version but the "Maxtor shared Storage 2".
Download at: httphttp://www.twonkyforum.com/unsupported/4.4.18/twonkymedia-mss2-4.4.18.zip
Unzip in Windows and extract it to the Mybook WE White light Download folder (map)
in a folder (map) called Twoky18
First BackUp the original Twonky
Start putty
Login as root
password welc0me
change directory to root
cd /
copy the directory to the Windows Download share
cp -r /twonky /shares/Download/twonky0
@ Windows:
Backup the files from the Download share, or leave them as twonky0 (Original)
copy from the original version (@twonky0) the next two files:
- twonkymedia.sh
- twonkyvision-mediaserver.ini
to the twonky18 map.
@ putty
now remove your old twonky from the mybook WE
rm -r /twonky
copy the new version…
cp -r /shares/Download/twonky18 /twonky
chmod +x /twonky/twonkymedia.sh
chmod +x /twonky/twonkymedia
chmod +x /twonky/twonkymediaserver
start twonky
/twonky/twonkymedia.sh start
and exit
exit
That’s it, Have fun

There are more recent versions now.

Great job NLW62!!!
I did it on MyBook too and worked like a charm!!!
Thank you very much for the info, great forum, keep it up!!!
PS. The only problem I am experiencing is when I play ripped DVD's (.VOB files) through twonky on my Sony Bravia the Movie menu is not "accesible" (i.e I cannot choose chapters subtitles etc…)
Anyone with any idea on how to overcome this would be very appreciated…
@ anpe008
i have twonky 4.4.10, i think, what about you?
Which firmware do you have?
I installed firmware 01.00.29 with Twonkymedia Version 4.4.9w
The next WD firmware Version 01.01.14 updated the TwonkyMedia Server to Version 5.1.
But the new twonkymedia V5 is buggy and I'm looking for a registered V 4.4.10
@NLW62
I confirm the workaround to update to Twonkymedia Version 4.4.18 - but now you need a license key :-(
…as workaround you can edit the /etc/hosts to beet the license server
Further informationen about the relationship between Mybook white light (ipkg feed is cs05q1armel) and "Maxtor shared Storage II" (ipkg feed is cs05q3armel) you get here: http://www.nslu2-linux.org/wiki/Optware/Platforms
PS: the difference between 4.4.9w and 4.4.18 are minor
It’s enough to overwrite this to files (the rest is the same):
/twonky/twonkymediaserver
/twonky/resources/clients.db
