Hi David !
No, you are not the only one who wants to secure this NAS ;-) I'm French too but it doesn't help you more ! :-D
I didn't see this thread before but I asked a similar question to the forum here :
… without much help :-(
Yes, I am "paranoid" too, if it is how some people are calling us… I can't believe people are using p2p to download torrent files from there NAS without real IP protection. Many of us don't have a good router with which they can make advanced configuration or run (DD-WRT for example) a custom linux firmware inside in order to secure their LAN… I'm just using the default low-quality router provided by my ISP which just does the job of simply providing me the precious access to the Internet ;-) One of the many reasons why I bought the MyBook, was to be able to shutdown my WinXP laptop while managing my downloads on the MyBook from any location… But I don't want anyone sniffing my connections/file transfers or even worst, penetrating my network. Whereas I was "safe" with a tuned combination of Comodo Firewall + PeerGuardian on WinXP, now I cannot use the full potential of the MyBook without this "iptables" feature on this MyBook Linux system :-(
If one day, anyone could provide a compiled version of the required kernel modules, I would be one of the really grateful ("paranoids") readers !!
Meanwhile, I will try ("help yourself, God will help you" :-) who knows?) to work myself on this goal with the help of tutorials about cross-compiling, available here… but I am at the bottom of the learning curve related to such Linux advanced administration level :-( I will see if I can build my own thread ([http://mybookworld.wikidot.com/forum/t-201185/]) with my experience or if people have any interests to share with me there…
Anyway I am really glad to appreciate the talent and work done by some of you like Frater, Kevku, Tomas123, etc… here, on this wiki. Thank you all and best wishes for 2010 !
