I have a 1TB WD MyBook Workd Edt II with RAID 1 (Mirroring) enabled. Last week I was copying data to my MyBook World when the source PC I was copying data from crashed. After rebooting the source pc I was unable to connect to the MyBook through Windows so I tried rebooting the MyBook by turning it off with the power button on the front, it wouldn’t turn off & the rings were still flashing. In the end I had to un-plug it from the power cable at the back.
When I turned it back on after 1 minute the drive made all the usual boot up noises, the disks spin up & the fan comes on but the blue rings on the front don’t light up any more. The drive is no longer present on my network. The lights on the network port on the back are on as they usually are (one green & one amber).
I contacted WD support & they said the chipset may be damaged & I need to send it in to be replaced. They directed me to one of there data recovery specialists who wana charge me silly money to recover my data from the two disks. I’m certain the disks are fine but I need to know If I can get to the data my self before sending it into WD support.
I have a Linux ubuntu set up as a virtual machine, would I be able to just connect one of the drives to access all the data through ubuntu or is this going to mess the drive up? Is there basically an easy way of getting to the data on a RAID 1 drive setup?
