Is there anything better than WD Anywhere backup? I'm using it on Vista and it seems to be causing problems and would like to get rid of it.
I am using bacula to back up several PCs running XP and Vista to a WBWE white light. Not trivial to set up, and there are some issues with the port, but it has been working well for a few months now. See http://mybookworld.wikidot.com/bacula
Could you be a little more detailed as to what you want out of the application?
Something that lets me backup files or folders to the MyBook, either on a schedule or in real time. I have found this, anyone used it before.SyncBaceSE
I personally think the best option is just to mount the share and setup a piece of software on the pc to sync files to it. In this case it would just be what ever software you like best.
You could also look into rsync.
I use "Autover", it's simple and free ….. it back ups "online" - very similar to WD Anywhere on your LAN. If you want to go across the internet, deploy OpenVPN on your my book (excellent description on this site, optware based) - works very fine if "external" bandwidth is sufficient.
Pure sync doesn't help if you delete a file accidentially. Autover has a versioning build in, so old version can be retrieved and it doesn't delete old file (unless you want it to do so, but this ist not necessarily ment when you use backup…). OK, it's simply made by adding timestamps to the original filename … but within the application it shows the versions transparently and if you access the filesystem via explorer, you'll find your filenames extended with the timestamp. Very simple.
