hi,
i tried to search the forum but dont know the right terminology to perform a search

I have an emtec (n200) player, upnp works fine but with limits,
i prefer to browse mybook folders and launch files from there

The MyBook is part of my (MSHOME) workgroup, and when the pc is on i can browse it
without any problem

When the pc is off i cant see it (from mediaplayer)
The n200 has linux (dont know what kind)

now, the question is:
It is possible to activate something on MyBook similar to the windows workgroups service,
that permits the mediaplayer to see MyBook shared folders, with the pc turned off?

I'm not a linux expert, so pls talk easy !!!:)

Also another idea is to just to install dsnmasq and use it as a local dns, you would then just need to give the clients the WD's ip as a dns server and then you should be able to put in the name of the server and get to it.

Really broadcast has been phased out in xchange for all dns. I would think your devices should support just putting in a host name and getting to it, heck maybe even defaulting to a certain one or makeing it a favorite.

I do this with media playing and my wii, I know broadcast is completely ignored there so dns is the only option.

Does your mediaplayer connect to the shared folders (cifs/samba) or dnla/twonkyserver?

both, but samba only through windows xp workgroup,
if pc is off, cant see the workgroup

What you are prolly looking for is a samba setting that enables it to act like a wins server. I know one exists, just dig into the configuration docs at the samba site.

the parameters i found are:
wins support boolean If set to yes, allows Samba to act as a WINS server
wins server string (IP address or DNS name) Identifies a WINS server for Samba to use for name registration and resolution

but are mutually exclusive, so if i enable it i fear to lose windows workgroup service, or create some conflict on the lat, that brings me to some disaster,
any idea?

You would want the drive to act as a wins server, unless you have another box that you are going to designate as the server. From there your network should just work, but if you have an issue with it just add the ip of the WD as the wins server in your name resolution setting, this works best if you are using a router.

i have not a router, and to see if i have right understood you are suggesting to set:
wins server = 198.162.0.147 (that is the address of the MyBook itself) ?

could this work with just NAS,mediaplayer and a switch in the middle (my goal);
with no issues using nas within the windows workgroup?

Well here is the issue I think you may be experiencing. You are wanting to use a old broadcast way of browsing shares, which relies on packets being sent out every so often (12 minutes i think). This is a really in effective option. You can use the wins server = true to enable the mybook as a server, but you also need to tell the mediaplayer to use the book as a wins server, this would normally be handled by dhcp.

Could you give a little more detail about your setup, what is the media player, etc.

Really the broadcast method is garbage as you have to wait a while for some boxes to be displayed as it is not always immediate that the broadcast is sent.

Depending on the settings of the mediaplayer,and what settings are available the switch should be fine, but again if you can not manualy setup the wins server ip in the mediaplayer this will not work.

MyBook 1 TB is the NAS
the mediaplayer is an EMTEC N200 (has linux but not sure of what can be activated)
in the middle just an hub
PC running xp pro

all with static ip

If you see in the first post you'll find other information you may need

So, if this helps, i was explaining that the mediaplayer can see the workgroup only if the
pc is on, so i have to turn it on if i want to browse the nas.

UPNP works too (even with pc off) but i find it poor.

so my question was: there is something that i can activate on the nas to share
folders (or workgroups) in the same way windows does, keeping in mind that the mediaplayer
can browse windows workgroups?
At the same time i'd like that windows isnt affected by this 'service' or whatever i have to do to make things work

well if it is linux then it should be possible to give it a wins server to look to. You will have to look into the documentation to see if there is a way to do so. As far as the network broadcasting samba should just do it well as long as all the pcs are on the same subnet mask.

I am in the same boat….I have an internet radio with media player functions. The radio can browse media on the nas fine when pc is on….when the pc is off however the media player can not browse the nas. The radio is an elcheapo Aldi branded beast.

If it is running linux then you would need to edit the smb.conf file on it and put in the wins server xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx line also make sure that wins is in the name resolution line.

Just to restate, you did make sure you have the same subnet mask on both devices correct?

yes, upnp and with an xp pc on all works, the goal is to make it work with the pc off
