Almost a year to the day since my previous MBWE died, the replacement has gone the same way. It's a 500Gb blue-light.
The disk powers on, the lights are up but it doesn't respond to any services which means ssh, samba and http are all gone, so I can't run the firmware hacks. The box does respond to ping requests however.
I have managed to remove the disks and mount them to linux and the partition contents look OK, so I'm working on the assumption that the MBR might be corrupt; that the ping response is being provided by the network controller before the disk needs to boot?
Question: should it be possible to just copy the MBR image provided in the Backup Images page into first 512 bytes of the disk? Without damaging the rest of the disk contents?
Alternatively, any other theories on what might cause this behaviour?
Thank in advance
