When OpenVPN is running, it causes disk activity which causes Smart_Spindown to never spin down. This is a problem as the user is then only able to enjoy the benefits of either OpenVPN or Smart_Spindown, but not both at the same time. If you are away from home and would like the drive to spindown as you will not be using it, but also want the flexibility of being able to VPN into it when needed, the configuration will not work in the standard setup. I asked TeinturMan if it was possible to start a script through AccessBook which would turn on OpenVPN remotely, that way OpenVPN would be off and not spinning the disk until it was actually needed. He gave me a Turn-On script and a Turn-Off script which work perfectly. Copy the text below and create the files StartOpenVPN.sh and StopOpenVPN.sh in /shares/internal/PUBLIC/WWW/Admin/
nano /shares/internal/PUBLIC/WWW/Admin/StartOpenVPN.sh
copy and paste the text below
# StartOpenVPN.sh
# This starts OpenVPN remotely
echo "modprobe tun">/shares/internal/PUBLIC/WWW/Admin/RemoteStartOpenVpn
echo "/opt/etc/init.d/S20openvpn start">>/shares/internal/PUBLIC/WWW/Admin/RemoteStartOpenVpn
sudo /shares/internal/PUBLIC/WWW/Admin/SetWebUser.sh EXEC_SCRIPT /shares/internal/PUBLIC/WWW/Admin/RemoteStartOpenVpn
rm /shares/internal/PUBLIC/WWW/Admin/RemoteStartOpenVpn
now save and close the newly created file
on to the next one
nano /shares/internal/PUBLIC/WWW/Admin/StopOpenVPN.sh
copy and paste the text below and save the file
# StopOpenVPN.sh
# This stops OpenVPN remotely
echo "modprobe tun">/shares/internal/PUBLIC/WWW/Admin/RemoteStopOpenVpn
echo "killall openvpn">>/shares/internal/PUBLIC/WWW/Admin/RemoteStopOpenVpn
sudo /shares/internal/PUBLIC/WWW/Admin/SetWebUser.sh EXEC_SCRIPT /shares/internal/PUBLIC/WWW/Admin/RemoteStopOpenVpn
rm /shares/internal/PUBLIC/WWW/Admin/RemoteStopOpenVpn
Assuming OpenVPN is stopped and you want to start it remotely, then from AccessBook go to the folder /WWW/Admin/ and select the green arrow which appears in front of the file StartOpenVPN. After you are finished your VPN session, use AccessBook to select the green arrow beside the file StopOpenVPN. That is all!
Thanks to TeinturMan for this quick and easy solution. Now as long as you have AccessBook installed, you can use OpenVPN and Smart_Spindown perfectly.
