Hello guys , 3months months ago i purchased a mybook world edition white light 4tb. A few weeks ago i noticed a strange sound coming out from the hard drives mostly when the drives are idle and not doing anything. So naturally i got a bit concerned and started doing some investigation. People say that its the western digital green drives parking and unparking their heads. This is done very often and can be checked from your smart data. So i run some smart tests and the results confirmed this.
smartctl -d ata -a /dev/sda for the first drive gives me a
Load cycle count = over 1600000!!!
and for the second drive smartctl -d ata -a /dev/sdb
gives me Load cycle count = 100000!
This is quite annoying since western digital gives an average of 300k before the drive starts failing.. so in a few months i have all these load cycle counts. Not only am i worried about my data but the noise that this parking/unparking does is annoying. I woke up today and it seems the drives were stuck trying to park heads since it was clicking every 5-8 seconds.
This seems to be a common issue just search in google for "western digital GREEN HEAD PARK NOISE"
I read in another forum an official statement from WD support that those green drives are not supported for use in a raid environment. Then why the hell has WD put them in myBook.
Anyway i want to ask you if anyone has noticed these sounds from their mybooks and if anyone knows what should i do?
In the synology forum they suggested using the WDIDLE utility to disable this feature in the firmware of the hard drives but it only runs from a boot disk in DOS and mybook runs linux and not all drives are supported.
