I tried changing the MTU of eth0 to Jumbo Frames, via

ifconfig eth0 mtu 9000

But no improved performance (my Windows PCs have been optimised for GbE).
Still only get about 7 MBytes/sec :-(

Is there a way of modifying the SAMBA configuration to improve transfer speeds ?

P.S. I few years back I did some nfs tuning at IBM Hursley Labs, but I have forgotten what I did to "tune" nfs !

Can we enable nfs on the MyBook ? If "yes", we may be able to get far faster than 7 MBytes/s.

What do others think ?

Any links to existing GbE/filesystem optimization tips would be handy :-)

about tweaking the SAMBA, yes, but I am not sure how much effect it will have on you.
I think I notice a speed improvement in at least listing and downloading… this would have no effect on uploading.

/var/oxsemi/smb.conf

add this to the bottom of the [global] section

read size = 65536
read prediction = true
socket options = IPTOS_LOWDELAY TCP_NODELAY SO_SNDBUF=4096 SO_RCVBUF=4096
wins support = yes

no reload or reboot should be necessary.

If you client is OSX, you should notice the increase than on a Win box.

I have a gigabitSwitch that has jumbo frames.
I can ping the WD hdd and is working. No difference in speed. Only 30MBytes/s reading and in writing about 18MBytes/s max.
The only thing that I had probles is with the Twonky media player.
It just keeps the CPU at 90%.
Removed JumboFrames and everything is back to normal.
No difference in speed
