Everybody knows the story of the Linksys WRT-routers. Build around Linux, so thanks to GPL, the source has been shared.
And because of that there's some nice custom firmwares out there.
So, would this ben possible for the Mybook? Well, only if it's all under GPL, and guess what? It is.
Here's part of the user manual:
GNU General Public License (“GPL”)
Firmware incorporated into WD's My Book World EditionTM Network Hard Drive
includes third party copyrighted software licensed under the GPL (“GPL Software”).
In accordance with the GPL: 1) the source code for the GPL Software may be
obtained at support.wdc.com/download/gpl; 2) you may re-use, re-distribute and
modify the GPL Software; 3) with respect solely to the GPL Software, no warranty is
provided, to the extent permitted by applicable law; and 4) a copy of the GPL is
included on the enclosed CD, may be obtained at www.gnu.org, and may also be
found at support.wdc.com/download/gpl.
So the source can be obtained here. It's about 400Mb.
Unfortunately, I've only started exploring the Linux-realm a few weeks ago, so I'm a bit underexperienced.
But if we put our heads together we can get something going, right? ;)
Is see there's another thread like this here, i've also posted there, this thread can be closed, it's in the wrong subforum anyway.
