just bought my mybook world today and since i found out that it ran linux i thought i would check to see if people have hacked it and they have. my first question is how up to date is the info provided here? i see at the front page there's a warning that this site was originally made with the older version of the mybook so how many of the hacks and things here still work? second im on a mac and primarily bought this to use as a time machine drive but if i can also use it for other things that would be awesome too but if i mess with any of the configuration will it still be time machine accessible? anyone here use it with time machine have any issues?
White book is discussed extensively here!!
Using the search dacility, there are about 150 pages with time machine quoted, however the search facility is a little simple.
The Western digital support page explains how to use time machine on the white book, or search google for Time Machine and
WD World Book for more info.
A word of caution, try to always power down the WB correctly, ie via the web page, or you may experience corruption, better still,
run it on a UPS (though it has no support for automated shutdown on power fail, duh)
do i have to power down the unit? i was thinking of just leaving it on all the time that way its always available.
You can power it down if you would like to save power, but other than that it is not necessary. Additionally if you have services running or cron jobs that you want run then you would have to leave the device on.
to clarify, you can leave it on, however, if the power is interrupted, you can get corruption, this happened to me, twice.
I run it on my ups system, when the mac detects a power fail, it shuts down the WB, HOWEVER, the mac will not shut down the
WB as part of its normal shutdown procedure, so I always power it down via the web facility as a precaution.
OSX does not appear to have a hook for running a user script during shutdown (duh apple)
