New network drive from WD - MyBook Live. http://www.wdc.com/en/products/products.asp?driveid=872
Do you think that we'll get a firmware update to match its features / GUI?
I doubt it, and a quick browse of the user guide shows no ssh access by default,
and its no longer a browser based configuration but instead accessible only by the WD software.
I hate to be negative but these things seem to feel like a step backward. I'm still interested in one to try however.

Browser based configuration should work (according to pages 54 and following).
Haven't seen ssh and/or telnet …

Say hogmaster, would you being willing to run and share the output of these commands on your live box?
cat /proc/cpuinfo
cat /proc/meminfo
Love to know whats under that box, I'm guessing 400mhz ppc cpu and hmmmm 128-256mb ram

Some other quick infos :
it looks like it is running apache web server… ( it will probably be possible to run AccessBook on this … )
Regards,
I see that this uses a ppc 44x CPU on apollo3g board, I have no idea what that is no relevant info on googl.
to get extra packages for it you should look for the openwrt project but the c libraries used might be too different.
hmm, i'm starting to think that I will buy it.
Reason - 800MHz CPU & 256MB RAM + they announced that it have much better LAN speed than current WD My Book World.
Only questions is:
- How to install custom software on it? (default debian 'way' with apt-get will work?)
- Does it run Debian?
- Is gcc included in default version?
- Optware will not run on it?
p.s. Here some review which shows nice LAN speeds - http://www.smallnetbuilder.com/nas/nas-reviews/31314-wd-my-book-live-reviewed
I dunno about the rest of you but I like to make sure my data is somewhat secure. IMHO this is an epic fail as you have to plug drives into it, and unless you wanna roll up your sleeves and see if RAID support is in it or can be added you do not have the redundancy of a mirror. Not to mention the user would have to build the array and what not from USB drives, which would be above most basic and intermediate users.
hmm.
RAID?
I believe this is single drive unit, not RAID.
What I want from NAS is good reliable, not much noise making machine you can use for your internet stuff
(downloading and storing stuff from web with pyload, using torrents, running ftp server, sharing content via web server, running irc client e.t.c.).
I agree that is what I want from mine too (and currently get), but I also would like to know that if the disk dies I will not loose all that data I stored on the device.
It looks to be a single disc system so, yea, if it dies there goes your data. In the MBWE if you have set it up in a mirror raid, you can loose one drive, replace it and be good to go.
I asked our member darwusch to share some command output from MyBook Live and here it is:

^
Judging by this it looks MyBook Live sctructure is totally different from My Book World :(
Dunno, if there is any ipkg feeds you can use for this new hardware..
I would love to buy it due to better hardware (CPU & RAM) but i'm scared that i will not able to do all things I currently can
with MyBook WhiteLight (installing tons of custom software with ipkg, fully using it as download machine, ftpd, httpd, irc client, e.t.c.).
one of main concerns is that you can't have mirrored file system (RAID1?)
Linux Toys
http://linuxishbell.wordpress.com/
Yup, with out a mirrored system, if your drive dies you just lost your data! Now I know we can back data up to (insert medium here), but the fact of the matter is if I wanted to play things off of dvd I would just burn them and use my Wii to watch'em.
I like having all of my media available to me with out having to load discs or hook up other drives, but then again that is just my 2 cents.
as a side note, I see that mdadm is listed as installed, which means it would be possible to raid together external drives. As I stated though, most people will not want to go through all the trouble of (or lack the proficiency to) setting up a raid for themselves; not to mention the extra cost for the external drives to raid together.
Some how I doubt it
Buy (costs a lot) QNAP TS-410 if you need RAID.
Ehh, if I get anything it will be a whitelight when I see one on sale. I have a bluering I picked up cheap and I love it!
well, the veteran blue ring has been working well for me. It runs RAID1. unfortunately, the read/write speed is a pain
Linux Toys
http://linuxishbell.wordpress.com/
@ ishbellnas - I'm with ya on that one, the read/write speed is a bit slow. Maybe one day I'll upgrade to a whitelight. ;)
Well I went out to buy a live some time ago only to find they were not in stock. However I have two points of useful information.
The live uses a power pc chip well it happens that optware does have a ppc feed: DS101G found at http://ipkg.nslu2-linux.org/feeds/optware/ds101g
While I am no ppc guru I have seen optware feeds migrate across ARM chips beautifully so I think it would be worth a shot to any brave mybook live owner.
Secondly I ended up picking up a non-WD NAS device, a Buffalo LS-VL. I took it home and found out it sports a 1.6Ghz ARM chip and 256RAM with a samba read/write of 66MB/s and 33MB/s. Its easy to hack like our mybooks and even runs flawlessly with an optware feed. Far be it from me to step on anyones toes I understand this IS a mybook based forum but I feel its relevant to the discussion.

Thanks for useful info, Silver Knight!
'Buffalo LS-VL' looks like nice gadget. There is only 1 downside for me.. it does have FAN :(
I really want fanless solution.
This device looks very promising (with regards to speed etc)…
However, since I'd like to install own software like I did on the WhiteLight, I'd like to know a few things:
- Are there any signs that WD uses u-boot as bootloader like they did with the WhiteLight (one could see that e.g. if we knew where
the serial console is) ? Or would someone owning the MyBook Live be willing to post the first few hundred sectors of the disk so
I can have a look (assuming the bootloader is still there and the board has no flash memory) ?
- Are there any signs for a serial console connector ?
- Maybe someone could post photos of the mainboard please?
- Is there a file /proc/config.gz ?
- What output does 'lsmod' and 'ps x' show?
- Are they using busybux and if yes, which version with which applets (execute /bin/busybox) ?
I'd be willing to buy one and go searching the serial connector like I did for the WhiteLight if I see a chance to find it ;-)
Also I think crosscompiling for PPC should be no problem.
Blip
@bleep : you can get good look of mainboard in this review - http://www.smallnetbuilder.com/nas/nas-reviews/31314-wd-my-book-live-reviewed
