I had tainturman involved getting his MyBookClone package working on MyBook. Well, we did end up with alot of troubles on my NAS so we decided to reinstall the software using his Format and Rescue procedure. At the end, everything seemed to work pretty well, even the data partition seems to backup the right way now (I didn't try to boot from the clone disk yet but it looks totally different from what it looked like before so I think it might work now.)
I also installed the latest fw 1.02.05. Actually the book runs well, I didnt have any major problems, so the questions below are most likely for my understanding only.
Well I came across some problems when installing some featurepacks.
1st one was, that I installed Samba35 again, which did successfully finish.
After that I created all the users via the standard WD Web GUI. Well, noone was able to access his/her share except the public ones.
So I added all the users via ssh by running the smbpasswd -a <user> command. After that (restarted my windows machine, and also MyBook)
and I still wasn't able to access the shares. So, after some research I found out that I had 2 different smbpasswd on my system.
One was located in /opt/bin/smbpasswd and another one was in /usr/bin/smbpasswd.
At the end I had to run the /opt/bin/smbpasswd -a <user> command to get the shares working as the standard web gui is using the one in /usr/bin.
I'm just not sure why this happened and how I could do it to make the standard web gui also using the one in /opt/bin/? - So I would not have
to add the same users twice.
2nd one is the spindown. I recognized that it didn't go into 'sleep' mode since I installed the system.
- I already disabled the MIONET thing using the guide on this forum.
- SK91atalk is also disabled as I do not use any Apple device here.
- Transmission is installed, but not running. Also the post download script is started by manual only.
- No-IP is updating every 120 minutes so it can't be this as well
- TwonkyServer is running, but set to 0 (update database = NO)
I also disconnected the network cable to make sure noone is accessing the device while I was testing my sleepmin:1min setting in monitorio.sh
Further installed packages are WebServer, MyBookClone and ABSkins
Installed Optware's are zip, unzip, unrar, nano and mpack, hdparm (for testing)
Actually it is the same installation as I had on the original drive, except the firmware. On the original drive it was 1.02.04
and it went to sleep when not accessed after 10mins.
I also pointed the monitorio.sh to the OPT ware version of hdparm and I only saw it going to sleep ONCE! for 3 mins only … then it 'woke' up
again and not even a lullaby can make it going to sleep again.
3rd do I get some strange log entries as for example:
[2010/12/25 01:44:34.280254, 0] nmbd/nmbd_packets.c:1631(retransmit_or_expire_response_records) retransmit_or_expire_response_records: Failed to resend packet id 22697 to IP 192.168.1.255 on subnet 192.168.1.10
[2010/12/25 10:50:28.631759, 0] param/loadparm.c:7588(lp_do_parameter) Ignoring unknown parameter "realm"
in /opt/var/samba/log.nmbd. I don't have any IP in use that is 192.168.1.255 and IP 192.168.1.10 is the one from MyBook
And it seems I have 2 active NMBD logs. Another one is located in /opt/var/samba/log.smbd and also shows very recent entries as:
[2010/12/25 01:48:18.542616, 0] param/loadparm.c:7588(lp_do_parameter) Ignoring unknown parameter "realm"
I think one is the WD standard web gui log and the other the one from Samba35. But why 2 ???
Did I miss something?
