This is a desperate plea for help!
This Q has been posted by others and ignored in at least 2 threads and answered with a "Blue Rings" or white-light-single-drive answer in others (can cite). I found no real, existing answers for this, but can't imagine I'm the first one to have this box and want it upgraded w/o WD's (crappy?) HDDs.
I have a WDH2NC20000N, which is a MBWE2 (or MBWEII), white light, double-wide for dual drives that came with 2TB: 2x 1TB WD Greens. [I write like this for others to find this, as I learned the hard way.]
I ran RAID1 from the beginning to keep multiple copies and cover drive failure. I filled the RAID and ordered 2 of the best 2TB drives I could find at the time (Samsung Spinpoint F4 HD204UI) to convert to a 2TB RAID1. If I only knew then …
With HDDs ordered, I found THIS … close enough … even has non-WD HDD instructions. My entire Christmas, New Years, and subsequent illness time off has shown me those instructions, though helpful, are NOT close enough. Now I'm really running out of time.
The main sticking point (now) is the MBWE2 rejecting a Samsung (to get the OS from an existing HDD). After hours of searching, the only thread I found here "resolving" that is THIS, where the author concludes that he has it fixed. However, when I follow the not-quite-complete breadcrumbs, I still have non-WD drive issues. I contacted the author privately today (don't expect an immediate response, but I'll take help from anywhere now).
That lone fix was to mod the factoryDefault.sh and then do a Factory Restore, blowing away all of my data on existing drive A. I naively tried to restore drive A by dropping untouched existing drive B into the HDD1 position (moving A to HDD2) thinking the RAID1 would see B as the master and copy data back to A; now I have partial data left on drive B. Fortunately, I followed instructions and have a full data b/u on one of the new 2TBs … now my only complete copy.
I tried the factoryDefault.sh trick multiple times, and still end up with "Hard drive 3 not manufactured by WD. My Book World Edition II can only operate using WD hard drives. Replace the drive." in the GUI, no cooperation under Volumes/RAID Mgmt, and no idea what will fix this via SSH, though I'm confident enough to try anything, and have tried a lot so far.
Remember, this is not blue rings … there is no temp monitor issue … that process doesn't exist here. This is WD's new way to make non-WD more difficult/impossible(?) to use.
* How I can I get the box to ignore the drive mfg and just let me use the Samsungs?
- And are there more detailed instructions available for white light dual drive HDD upgrades?
- Or am I just at the wrong site for that?
- Where can I go?
- I'm tired of spending 10a-2a of my recovery time on this.
- WD is getting no more of my $$; if literally impossible, DIY RAID with these drives is my next step. ["proprietary"=hate]
My *n*x experience: I used to run existing UNIX boxes back in the early 90s (back when the Bastard Operator From Hell just started writing) and some through early 2000s (but no RAIDing), then nothing/rust, then put Ubuntu on a new home box last year and rarely used that boot side. I now have the sole backup 2TB HDD in my Ubuntu box, and an external eSATA shell to drop the other 3 drives (old A, old B, new A) into as needed.
This experience is bringing back memories, teaching me new things, keeping me in Ubuntu, and taking years off my life. Please help me to END THE MADNESS! What can be done?! Thanks for your appropo advice. Just let me know what addl detail you need.
[Edit: forgot who I was here]
