I sniped a cheap MBWE off ebay about a week ago, i been lookin at an external and i seen this come up and it had networking capabilities - useful i thought!
intially i just wanted to share files between the computers in my house, but when i found out i could also access things remotely i was quite pleased with it.
subsequent reading up found WD's rediculous DRM management, and, to be frank, having to install access anywhere on every computer i want to use to access the MBWE seemed a load of trite.
So before booting it up i read around. I came across martin hinner's linux hack and thought great! Im knowledgeable enough to normally hack things confidently after a days googling, but I dont know the first thing about linux, and i dont like doing things i dont have the gist of. Im reading through a few beginners guides and tutorials, if anybody knows a decent idiots guide please do link.
So, now for a few questions.
I used the web based setup to setup my drive, and i can now access it fine over LAN using windows explorer or firefox. In an ideal world i would like to be able to access my files remotely using a web browser or explorer and without the need to run linux scripts everytime. MY mam will be accessing the drive, and she barely knows how to turn the damm computer on.
Now that my drive is part of my network, can i not mess around with global and local ip adresses, ports and such like so that i can type \\ipaddress:port\folder or something?
i tried messing about with the port forwarding of my router and using my global ip adress and all its done is let me access the MBWE's setup page remotely. Can you even use ip address and http to do this?
Im still not confident about using linux, and i guess i wont be unless i start, but given the unapologetic nature of linux, id rather not mess about on it until i have a decent understanding of what im doing. Looking around for a more noob-friendly interface i came across webmin, which is a gui for linux admin, and removes the need to type linux speak, or so it claims.
Would i need to install this onto the MBWE? is this even possible? webmin has inbuilt ftp and samba etc, so installing it and having a windows -esque panel to control things from would be great. Will the drive run this, or do i have to install it onto my computer? will it run and most importantly, do you think it will work?
Answers on a postcard please, the best one wins a blue peter badge…
