Taking the cover off my Blue Light, I count ten (10) blue LEDs.
The question in my mind is, why the phrack didn't WD, instead of making this silly blue ring, just put in a 7/8 segment, 9 segment, 14 segment, or even better, 2 side by side 7 segment LED displays that could of displayed 256 / 512 / 16384 / 65536 /262144 pattern combinations. They could of done the spinning circle effect just as well, AND output all kinds of status information (percent full, for example, temperature, or transfer speed) or error codes.

7 LEDs x2:
If these lights are user controllable from the OS, which I believe reading somewhere they were from a custom little program someone wrote, it should be feasible to unsurface mount these LEDs and wire them up to a 9 segment display.
If WD was to go all out in a future version, I myself would go for a 1 or 2 character wide dot matrix display, then you could do all kinds of symbols and bit pictures.
Example of a single Character Dot matix display: [http://www.futureelectronics.com/en/technologies/semiconductors/optoelectronics/led-segment-displays/Pages/1654607-LTP-1457AKY.aspx]
