Can anyone help a newbie who is not a linux user? I have set the mybook up just fine using basic windows software. No mionet in site. The mybook is seen and I have set the public folder a letter z:/. My problem is that I can only write to the drive at 3meg a sec on my 100meg network! Is this the way it is? I want to use this drive as a home media hub where my 3 HTPC can all access the same drive for their media docs. Any tips?
Also. Is there a page with instruction on how to hack the book in windows friendly speech?
Welcome to our family at first :)
You should install SSH Secure Shell software to hack you book. The search about opening ssh of book. I suggest you martin hinner's. Then do the hacks. Thats all. Transfer speed is slow.. There is nothing to do with that..
1. I dont think there is something wrong with the speed of your network, but the interpertation of the meaning Mb as network links are refered in megabits and not megabytes.
2. Depends a bit what you want todo ofcourse. The default windows netword-file-sharing application (SAMBA) is fine for sharing folders with your HTPC's. I use my XBOX to stream movies/music and this works perfectly with a standard MyBook. If the HTPC supports windows-file-sharing, i would just stick with this.
However if you want to connect other devices (such as UPnP streaming audio/video devices), you might want to install additional software using the SSH hack. For instance I installed mt-daap, so iTunes reconizes the MyBook as an iTunes sharing device and i can connect a DAAP supporting slimbox to stream audio to my kitchen and
Next to DAAP, there are also UPnP daemons, such as Firefly and MediaTomb).
almost forgot to mention… it would help if you put all your clients in the same domain or workgroup, so the computers are part of the same network (if using windows).
i've installed ssh access on myebook via the website of martin hinner but can anyone tell what the username should be and also the password. What i try , nothing will work.
using the web interface, create a username and password. login via ssh with that user/pass combo. You should then be able to su to root when you need to change system files.
IIRC there is no root password at first, but as soon as you su to root you should change the password to lock down your system.
I got the Mybookworld recomended by my IT boss at the council and tyed to install it using mionet software that followed and i got it up and running i was not allowed to get ip from dhcp so i configured it manually with a static ip and dns by conecting it directly to a worstn xp pro and doing a reset as described in the manual. Ok so far so good now the mionet sofware find the disk and i could map the networkdrive from my nt script net use m:\\ip\public and all computers could write to the disk with or without using mionet software but not delete files i could not ping my sever with ping Mybookworld so what i did to come around 2 problems was i added a wins entry for it and bam it reported itself in as a windows nt server ver 4.9 on the network. and every computer winxp win95 winnt4 server can acsees copy delete files on it and do as they please thats the purpose i wanted it for a big storage for my huge files 4gb and more and that is now possible still using the linux patition on it so if you just want it as a big disk thats a way to come around the problem and the speed i have it hooked up with 1 gb is no good but that i think i have to take i just use the disk for storage nothing important any file is possible mp3 avi etc etc not as described in wd that they only support some file extenstions. Ofcorse i cant create new shares on it but in my case its not no need for that. Mionet and Wd anywhere is crap pardon my lang
