I've got a 750GB World Edition last week and should have waited with hacking when on the first day it seemed to have 'crashed' without even entering ssh. Allas; now I have a hacked MyBook and on unexpected moments, it just freezes up on me. Connections get dropped, even when I am not running anything special: just this moment, after about 4 minutes and without even typing a first command, I get disconnected from shell.
Laptop:~ DWizzy$ ssh 10.0.0.134
DWizzy@10.0.0.134's password:
[DWizzy@BitBoek ~]# Read from remote host 10.0.0.134: Connection reset by peer
Same happens to rsync's connection etc. The strange thing is doing a portscan first lists some ports open, but running it a second time lists all as closed. It seems they get closed after trying to reach them.
Sometimes it will restart after a minute without power, sometimes it won't - the disc spins up but no lights will blink. Sometimes I have to wait an hour or so before it will start up again, leaving me to think this might be an error with the HDD, making Linux apps crash one by one because they can't access the drive.
Do any of you share my diagnosis or have another suggestion?
As I have modded my MyBook now, could I expect any form of warranty?
When I get it back and running for a moment, could I restore as much as possible from the original state without opening the casing (thus really voiding the warranty)? Removing programs, rsync and ssh would not pose such a problem, but resetting the root password to the pre-Martin Hinner hack?
