A week or so after I purchased a 1GB single harddrive MyBook World Edition, it stopped working one morning for no apparent reason (no bumps or drops :-).
The drive sounds perfect (spins up, head unparks, etc) and all the lights come on properly, but the drive now never gets assigned an IP address when connected to our wireless router or directly into a computer. When the ethernet cable is connected directly from the mybook to my computer, the light pattern on the drive begins spinning just like it should, but nothing else happens… I tried all the reset procedures on the drive, but it did not help.
We had several power outages around the time the drive failed, but I didn't really notice a direct correlation. Just mentioned in case it helps anyone guess what's wrong.
I took the drive back to the place where I bought it for a refund, but after doing so got home and read a bunch of horror stories about people who were the victims of identity theft after their returned hard drives ended up on the black market (I was using this drive as a full backup of several of our computers)… I bought the drive back from them, and have decided to recover some data I had on it myself.
Since all the computers I have access to are laptops, I purchased a sata to usb cable to connect the hard drive inside the mybook to my computer.
After disassembling the mybook and connecting the hard drive to my computer's (MacBook Pro running OS X.5) usb port with the adapter cable, I was presented with a message saying that the drive can not be read, please format it. Disk utility has nothing to say about the drive except that it can't be mounted.
I tried using Parallels Desktop to mount the drive using Windows XP, but although I am able to see the drive using Western Digital's disk diagnostic utility, and the drive passed the basic check with no errors, the drive does not show up in windows explorer.
I also tried using Parallels to mount the disk using Ubuntu Linux, but it didn't do anything at all when I connected the hard drive.
Hopefully someone will have some ideas for me to try.
Thanks very much!
