Serial Line (RS232) + Debian Install

Hi
I'm trying to install debian on MyBook World Edition and I'm trying to make head and tales of all the information on this and other sites. I 've just bought the "TTL-232R-3V3" USB cable for Serial Line Interface. I have some questions about these steps.
1. Is it the right cable?
2. How is the cross-compile procedure done(?): A HDD is attached to a ordinary Linux computer. The HDD is prepared for the MyBook (partitions, filesystems and later on inserted into the MyBook to be booted?
3. When should the serialline be connected? Att bootup? After bootup?
3. Is the tty for USB cables the same ass /dev/ttyUSB0 ?
