I am using a 2x1Tb MyBook World edition (blue rings).
Some time ago, I posted a thread about removing RAID, but I am feeling that now it is the right time to refresh and restructure the discussion in order to simplify things.
In the "shared storage manager" under "drive management", WD is giving us the choice between "large single volume (LINEAR)" and "secure volume (RAID 1)".
What I want my MyBook to do is:
1) RAID 1, with my special wish that the two disks are shown seperatly (for example in Windows My Computer).
2) JBOD, two disks are shown seperatly and can be used like I want.
The first proposition is a new one, so I don't know if it is possible or how to do it.
The second one is my classical fight. I have to say I am a total Linux Newbie. At the beginning I was totally clueless, got some interesting and helpful posts (which I honestly didn't always fully understand) and I googled a lot. Here is what I did until now (before I gave up for some time):
I enabled SSH.
I used PuTTY. With "cat /proc/mdstat" I got:
Personalities : [linear] [raid1]
md1 : active raid1 sdb1 sda1
2939776 blocks [2/2] [UU]
md2 : active raid1 sdb2 sda2
104320 blocks [2/2] [UU]
md3 : active raid1 sdb3 sda3
987904 blocks [2/2] [UU]
md4 : active linear sdb4 sda4
1945407104 blocks 64k rounding
Appearantly I should stop and remove the mds. But it only works halfways. When one sd is done, the other one is busy and can't be touched.
After restarting the MyBook, everything is resynced, and all my actions are undone.
As I said, I am a total Linux newbie so in case you have a solution for either 1) or 2) please help me with clear instructions for the Linux part.
Thanks a lot in advance.
