I'm new to this forum — recently bought a WDMBWE 500GB and have been having fun setting it up with info from this great site.
After only a week I've notice that the drive starts making an awful squealing noise when it is accessed. I have about 15 days left to return (Circuit City in the US), so I thought smartmontools would be the best way to see if there is a major drive problem.
I installed smartmontools from the optware repository, started the smartd daemon and ran
smartctl -a /dev/sda
It says the WD drive doesn't support SMART (see output below)!! Is there some way to enable SMART on this drive or has someone gotten smartmontools working? Do SATA drives even support SMART? (I would have guessed so, but not sure of anything now…)
Also, has anyone else encountered the squealing drive?
I love this unit and would hate to have to return it, but I've also read of reliability problems with the WD mybooks, and don't want to put all my data onto a dying drive.
Here's the output
