I was having problems with my Shares that I was setting up (either through the web interface or manually through ssh) not showing up. In fact my MyBook was not showing up at all in my 'My Network' on my PCs. This was all due to the fact that I had given the mybook a device name (through general setup) of NetworkStorage_1. Apparently the maximum legal name length for a NetBIOS device is 15 characters (ie 'NetworkStorage_')
It took me a while to track this down because in the script for SAMBA (/etc/init.d/samba.sh) it has a -l/var/log option specified on the start command for Samba. I had been checking /log/var/log.smbd for problems since I was assuming this was a samba problem when really this is a NetBIOS issue that manifested itself by the MyBook not being found when I was looking for Samba shares. The netbios logs (i'm assuming) are luckily in the folder (/var/log/log.nmbd) and had the following error in it
register_name: NetBIOS name NETWORKSTORAGE_1 is too long. Truncating to NETWORKSTORAGE_
So even though it was trying to gracefully handle the problem of the name being too long, things were still not working properly. I changed my device name to something shorter (although less understandable for my less-techy family members) and with a quick reboot of the MyBook everything worked as expected!
I hope this helps someone in the future should they have the same problem.
