keep in mind that i'm not a total noob but im not a pro eighter and sorry for alota text in advance.
litl info: when i connect to my WD using \\[name] all of the shares are named in capital letters and when i try to access my shares the only one that doesn't give me the '\\[name]\[share] is not accessable. you might not h….' error after trying to log-in is \\[name]\ID14410692\ which was here before i even turned the thing on for the first time (i didnt create it). i got the user:passwrd for this share from mionet (which i disabled recently), it said that this login information should be supplied to programs that do backups or smthng…. so i mapped \\[name]\ID14410692\ and used this share for everything. but the problem is that it's username and password is awfully long and it's simply impossible to remember it (i use KeePass as an alternative for my memory), so after a long time of this torture i created a new user and a share for it. i moved all of the files from ID14410692 to the FILES(my new share) and then the problems started. i couldnt even access the share using \\[name]\FILES, i got the '… not accessable. …' error. i freaked out. but after some time i noticed that using \\[ip]\[share] is totaly diffrent. for starters the share names are not in capital letters (weird, huh?) and i can access all shares with the appropriate logins. that would be good enough for me but another 2 problems revealed themselves:
1) all files (only files, not folders) that i copied over from the old share to this one had the 'hidden' attribute checked (again, weird) which i fixed by simply changing the attributes of the files through 'properties'.
2) whenever i use the \\[ip]\[share-name]\ address to access my files and try to for example rename a file (in explorer) nothing happens, no visual change, no errors and no name change eigther. although when i refresh the current directory (simply do 'Back' and 'Forward') i can see all of the changes i made. this is the most annoying thing i had to go through for a really long time and it's simply not acceptable.
(by the way i had to change the permissions of the files after the copy cause apperantly the user forced to be used by the ID14410692 share was root and files created by root can only be written by root.)
so i have the 'invisible changes' problem and 2 questions:
1) what diffrence does it make if i use the IP or the NetBios name of my MBWE to connect?
2) why were the attributes of the files i copied from 1 share to another changed to 'hidden'?
thanks for any help in advanced and again sry for so much text…
love the forum by the way….
