will a firmware upgrade work?
how to restore the internal OS?

which would be the easiest way to restore MB OS to origins (remove installed files, settings etc.) without loosing all stuff I got in /share/internal/PUBLIC?

ATM I got 1.1.18 firmware and seems to be a 2.0.18 upgrade
if I make the upgrade will it clean all stuff I've installed\copied around the disk?

BTW where could I find a changelog and a tutorial how to make the upgrade

As far as I understand doing a firmware upgrade to 2.0.18 WILL wipe all the SYSTEM files and replace them with the new firmware (I may stand corrected). The upgrade will NOT wipe your public files. Therefore by doing this firmware upgrade you will be putting your system back to the way WD intended. Hope this helps

Andy.

Andy,

How confident are you about this? Can anybody confirm?

I recently bought the 2-disk 1.5TB version, upgrated to 2.00.18, and probably jumped into hacking it a little too quickly. Now I have a few things that are partially working and nothing that I fully understand. I think what I want to do now is reset the box to the way it shipped from the factory, and use mionet while I learn a bit about Linux. Once I'm more confident in my abilities, I might learn about cross compilation and have an experimental space where I can work. Perhaps by creating a separate partition on one of my other PCs and installing fedora/ubuntu/etc on it so I can learn how to setup/compile/configure Samba/Cups/someWebServer from scratch.

BTW… on another note… I know the processor is pretty weak on these boxes but does anybody have a feel for whether it could support a J2EE web container, for creating simple JSP-based web applications, maybe simple Struts with JSF.

Thank you,

Kevin

well moinet runs on some version of java so if you can figure out how to use the pre installed version of java…………..

/usr/mionet/bin/cvm -showversion

I will not change the firmware if its working now. Many had problem accessing files after upgrade.
Just remove the programs you've installed from start up and they won't take any resource.
You can turn Mionet on and off in the Web setup. It called WD Anywhere or something like that.

my problem is that following a sh**ty howto I've forced the installation of an amuled that it's actually broken, and now I've its file sparse around directories
since I'm not so confident with linux commands I'd love to clean OS partition

All I can say is that I installed some stuff and wanted to reset everything and it worked for me reinstalling the firmware. However I am a novice too but I have manged to get the grasp of Linux and now am enjoying ftp, media server, ssl and am really pleased with what the box can now do, without the limitation set by WD!
