Open SSL and VSFTPD

Has anyone got Open SSL and VSFTPD to work together?

I keep getting this error when I try and install VSFTPD with SSL support

ssl.o: In function ‘ssl_cert_digest’:
ssl.c:(.text+0x54c): undefined reference to ‘EVP_sha256’
collect2: ld returned 1 exit status
