Hi there,

Maybe someone can help me with this one. Don't know if i understand it correctly.
What is was assuming when i transfer files, that the "very slow speed" was normal because of crappy hardware.
But then i tried some idiot tests to see if i could us a media extender with the mybook.

Copy a file from the mybook (at 5,833 MB/s) ok i knew this crap :(

Running 3 different video's (divx 700 mb). No problem there. (nice, can use it for my extender)

Ok here it left thinking. did another test , same result.
What is always assumed, was that a divx uses about 2 MB/s, so this would be 16 MB/s (strange?, why no higher file transfer then)

Ok, another test.
Running 3 different video's(continues switching timeframes until video's begin to stutter) AND copy a file from the mybook (at 4.76 MB/s)
Network card detect continues 50 % load of 100 MBps. NICE

But if i assume correctly, filetransfer is screwed down in speed. Why?
Or am i missing something here?

700MB @ 2MB/sec = 350 sec/5.83 mins of video. Huh?

Lets say your videos are 1.5 hour (90 mins/5400 secs) movies. 700/5400 = 0.1296…. MB/sec is more likely.

I think the point is that streaming a divx movie is not actually that bandwidth intensive (correct me if I'm wrong).

Another problem here is everyone is using different measures of speed and using different connections. While my book is connected to my network by ethernet, I still only ever connect to it over Wifi. I'm sure everyone else has their own little bizarre LAN quirks. Personally I never bought the thing thinking I'd get great performance out of it, the plain fact that it does all my torrent downloading unattended for me is good enough,.

Oh yeah.
Stupid of me, could have calculated that myself.

The problem is that filetransfer of a single file never exceeded 5MB/s.
While maximum capaciteit is 8 MB/s (tested it with the gbs connection)
Why the difference in transfer rates?

I'd presume its something silly like packet overheads or whatever.
Nothing based on technology runs at 100% in a literal sense ;)

'Up to' and 'Capable of' are two commonly used technical phenomenons. :)

I often "sync" files between my PC and a MBWE using a program called FileSync, which displays the transfer speed in real-time, and it usually hovers around 4.5-5 Megabyte's a second, which would translate to about 36 to 40 megabits per second. Slightly less than half the normal bandwidth of a standard 100 megabit connection. Even though it's connected to a gigabit network, those are the speeds I'm getting.

It's a well-known fact that these boxes are not fast. WD has acknowledged that the CPU that's onboard is not powerful enough to get real gigabit speeds out of it. I use it to stream MP3s and Videos, and store backup files and ISO images. While it's a pain to load 100GB of data to it, once it's on there, using the stuff is plenty fast enough. The only real time when it gets annoying is when you're dumping a lot of data to it at one time.

Additional Thought: Samba isn't terribly fast either. Even with a faster box, Samba is typically slower to serve files than Win2k, WinS2k3, etc. This is fine with me, because MS charges hundreds of dollars for licenses, and Linux is free, so I can't complain much, but the fact is that it IS slower…

dunno i usually get 7.5 -8 MB/s down and 5MB/s write via nfs…
