I have a WD My Book World 1TB (white lights) for more then 3 years and never had any problem. I use it mainly for torrents download, using Transmission client.
I believe I can keep using transmission on My Book Live, right?
The reason I want to upgrade is because the 100Mbps ethernet on my current NAS is terrible when I want to transfer big files, and sometimes I reach full capacity on it. I'd like to get a gigabit NAS.
Some people suggested me getting a QNAP or Sinology NAS, but those are really expensive where I live. With the price they ask (for a diskless NAS) I can buy a 3TB WD My Book Live and keep the change.
So, is the gigabit ethernet transfer speed ok on this device? Will I see real difference compared to my current NAS? Or should I really open my wallet and get another brand? Keep in mind that torrent download and occasionaly media transfer to my WDTV are the only things I need.
I've both (world and live), both are gigabit but live have more memory and faster processor.
Both are connect to gigabit switch, in write mode I've have something like 15mo/s with world and 45mo/s with live.
In read mode I've something like 35mo/s on world and 60mo/s on live.
For your torrent use I think you will have no difference, what's your internet connexion speed and type ?
For media transfer, you will see a 2 to 3x difference depend you read or write.
Qnap or Synology are more memory and faster processor (and more expensive), it's like having a computer, so you can expect 110mo/s in read and write (in this case you will be limit by your gigabit wire), but if you only use for torrent and media transfer I think it's useless…
My first thought was to keep using the NAS as I do today.
The benefits of buying a QNAP or Sinology is, probably, having all my files centered on the same place, with or without automatic backup. I thought of doing that, removing a 2TB HDD from my computer and keeping only the SSD.
But again… is it worth doing that, spending a good amount of money? I don't know.
Thanx for replying.
