MBWE Fan upgrade enquiry
windsorrwindsorr 1214932851|%e %b %Y, %H:%M %Z|agohover

Hi
I read here that some have upgraded or replaced the little rattly fan with something bigger and quieter to make cooling more efficient. I was wondering what the power limit is..ie whats the biggest fan you can fit in terms of the amps or watts that it draws from the box.
I have four MBWEs sitting in a cuboard which is now pretty warm and so would also like to make the hard drives work less..they spend long periods of time doing nothing as they are mostly used for Media…Will follow the ideas here for doing that and truning off useless services such as Mionet and the fuel guage thing….
Any guidance on fan upgrade would be very helpful…would prefer to go the route of replacing the fan ie reusing the power socket on the box for another fan rather powereing an extra one via the USb..(frankly the coding required to get that to work, I think is beyond me..)..

Any help much appreciated

Cheers
Rich

If they're in a cupboard, why not just get a 12V power supply and put a few computer fans in there? Much better and easier then changing fans in MyBook.

Many thanks…are there any fans that you would particularly recommend?

Any computer case fan will do. As long as you keep nice air flow across the MyBooks, you're fine. You can 12V power adapter for the fans.

Here's what I did.
80 mm fan connected to USB port (5 Volts), temps under 40 degrees Celsius ALL THE TIME and VERY QUIET !
Probably lost garanty, but who cares (can send disk directly to Western Digital when it should fail…)
