Slow transfer via SCP
ridiculously slow (600KB/s) - what am I doing wrong?
cuteusmaximuscuteusmaximus 1215022633|%e %b %Y, %H:%M %Z|agohover

I have the MBWE connected to my Linux laptop via a crossover cable. I am able to connect to it using ssh and copy files
with scp. My problem is that the transfer speeds are S-L-O-W. I'm getting ~600KB/s via scp, which means 2GB/hour.
At that rate it will take 500 hours to fill the drive - over 3 weeks!

I have stop several services (mionet / lightworld / cron) to try to free up memory, it hasn't made a dent.

Any suggestions? I'd be satisfied with 5MB/s!

Thanks

p.s. I should mention that the laptop is not connected to any network - it's a standalone system. So the problem is not caused
by other network activity.

Do you have both ethernet interfaces set to auto negotiate? Try setting your laptop to 100/full or 1000/full (if it will handle it).

You are unnecessarily stressing the ARM-CPU by using an SSH-transfer.
I just did a test and got even worse results.

4~5 MB/s is a speed you'll get using NFS / FTP or SMB

BTW if you were in a network using a switch, it will not slow down when other files are transferring to other nodes.

That did it. I followed the instructions elsewhere on this site to enable nfs and set up an nfs server. It took a bit of time
but I eventually got it working, and the transfers are up to the 4-5MBp/s that I expected.

Thanks for the help!!!!!!!!!

Are we still likely to see a rubbish speed using the USB port?

Can someone test?

This thing set me back 120 euro's which is not really a lot for what I'm getting.
It would be nice if the thing was a bit faster, but if you take it in mind and don't move all your data back and forth you can have a lot of fun with it.

For instance… I have a cronjob that will automatically unrar the RARS I downloaded and move the data to another location. The moment I notice that the download is ready my files are extracted as well….

If you try to connect it with USB, you'll get 0MB/s.
The USB is for adding another drive to the MyBook. It's not for connection as external drive.
Let other has posted, it is fast enough for most purpose. Like ftp server, media server, daily backup, torrent download etc which you can't do with a USB drive.

If you want speed, take the drive out and plug it in a SATA port.

I've tested mine again last night. Writing files to the drive is about 4MB/s, reading from it is 6.5MB/s.
