I am trying to modify my mbwe. I tried two different ssh clients. With both mybook accepts the user name as root, but neither accepts the password as root, as the instructions say. I was able to update the firmware but cannot go any further. Am I missing something?
Make a different user in the web interface, log in with that newly made user via ssh, and then go to root using the command "su -", then change the root password using passwd. Then you can log in with root.
u need to enter the username in capitals
Thanx for your reply. However, I did enter the user name "ROOT" in caps, and tried lower case and caps for the password "root". I keep gettting the message "access denied". Is there a setting in my SSH client(Putty) that I need to change?
That's because the root user currently doesn't have a password! You need to make another user in the web interface, (i.e. JOE), then log in with that user JOE via ssh, then go to root with the command "su -", then change the password with the command "passwd"
Thanx for your patience.
I created a new user and successfully logged in as that user.
I entered the "su-" command. It accepted it.
I entered the command "passwd"
It asked me for my old password. It told me my password was no good. I tried caps and lower case.
WHY. I entered the same password as the one for the user I just created.
Why do you need to change the password in order to be able to log onto the root?
If only I knew someone that understood this better…Ugh!
Sorrry for the last message. I didn't have a space between the "su" and the "-".
Now that I can get to root I would like to take ownership of the drive from mionet and have the drive behave like a normal drive. How do I do this? I would like everyone on my network to have full read-write access. I would like to have everyone be able to map the drive to a drive letter as I can do with the public directory. I'm concerned that the drive will stop working or the data on the drive will disappear. How do I accomplish this?
Once again, thank you for all your help.
Hey guys, any idea what to try when "su -" prompts me for a password? If I'm reading all this right my root acct shouldn't have a password but I'm being prompted for one and I have no clue what it is. I can successfully SSH in using the personal acct I created but am unable to get to root to perform further functions. TIA!
