Hello all, I love having a stand alone file server in my home and appreciate all that have contributed to this forum.
To date, I have only installed SSH via the Martin Hindler method. I have 5 networked computers of varying speed and capabilities. I have been loading all my files on the MWBE II and haven’t had any crashes. I have easy access to them and can stream both video and audio files to my Windows computers.
Initially, a had planned on programming it as a network print server, with the main printer being USB’d to the MWBE II using CUPS. Aside from that I really do not have any WWW networking applications I currently desire, but I am somewhat a Windows Techie and would consider experimenting in the future. My main concerns being security and I currently only allow approved MAC addresses to access the Network.
What I am trying to determine is what else I should install on the MWBE. I have 2 young children 5 and 6 and would not want them to have access to my private files. I have spent quite a bit of time reading the various forums and I am concerned and confused as to what exact programs are LINUX network specific (ie having LINUX operating workstations and what work well or better then the Windows counterparts.
If anyone can help enlighten me of the benefits of using CUPS over the Windows print manager I would appreciate that. Additionally, if there are any programs that work better then Windows I would like to know that too.
I have two routers, a U.S. Robotics Wireless MAXg Router (USR5461) and a Linksys WRT54G version 2.1 DD-WRT hacked (I use this as Repeater Bridge for my XBOX 360).
