I have My Book WII 1TB in RAID1. I'd like to fiddle around with hacks, but I wouldn't like to end up with bricked book. Could I play safe by disconnecting the second disk from book and playing with the first disk. And if the box gets bricked I could just disconnect the first disk and reconnect the second one. Does this trick work or is the something in the MBR or elsewhere that differs with RAID1 disks?
koodari, welcome to the club. I had the same idea a while ago. I think the ultimate question is:
Has anyone ever successfully replaced one of the two disks? Does the MBWE2 really format and copy all the data to the newly installed disk automatically?
You can find the procedure for replacing one of the hard drives and restoring raid, on the wdc.com web site.
see support article number 1496 "How to rebuild a Mirrored RAID array on a WD My Book World Edition II Dual-drive storage system"
-thankfully I've never had to use it , and I hope I never will!
There is also a Rescue Procedure on this web site here, which is probably what you would have to use, if you accidentally 'bricked' your mwb.
If you are interesting in how playing around with raid, suggest you google "mdadm".
