I guess there must be some document that explains why 2.00.18 exists, with lists of feature changes, bug fixes support etc, but I've not found it.
Does anyone know?
Tim

That wasn't really an answer was it?
Hasn't someone asked this already?
Those who are flitting between V1 and V2 must have a reason?
I've asked a similar question half a year ago, but I didn't find an answer.

I've sent an email to the support of WD but haven't got an answer.
JpgOrganizer
MBWE II (blue rings), 2x 1TB WD10EARS in Raid 1 mode
Firmware 01.01.18
Hacks: SSH, optware, spindown
Applications: dokuwiki, nightly backup script
For one thing, they introduced an undesirable "feature" that I noted here:

Thanks for useful feedback.
Yesterday I upgraded from 2.00.18 to 2.00.19 and I noticed this upgrade was much quicker than normal, not much more than 10 minutes, compared with perhaps 30 mins when I upgraded from 2.00.15 to 2.00.18
It appears this upgrade was what I would call an incremental upgrade, just upgrading some files that needed to be changed.
The process went through cleanly - in as much as no errors were reported and the upgrade was reported as successful and Shared Storage Manage now reports that the firmware is 2.00.19.
Why is this important?
Because some of the linux files in /etc, and /usr had been corrupted, and what I really wanted was a total re-write style upgrade of my sda1. But this upgrade did not do that. Some of the old files remain, so the upgrade did not fix my problem.
I now need to go back to a much earlier FW version, perhaps as far back as 2.00.14, and then upgrade the FW from there. I am pretty sure 2.00.15 is a total re-write and not an incremental upgrade, but I know nothing about 2.00.16 or 2.00.17. Based on the 30 plus mins time for my upgrade from 2.00.15 to 2.00.18, at least one of these is probably a full upgrade. Does anybody know which one or have more information on this? Comments appreciated.
0.o there's a new fw out for the old one? well you can still get .18 at http://cache.websupport.wdc.com/wdgxnc-02.00.18.wdg and use the manual upgrade ….
.. ooh yes the .19 update is only 4mb so it cant be a full upgrade… lol and hope that wd didn't get hacked again
most likely some pointless mionet update…
Thanks kevku. Yes I already downloaded the 2.00.19 FW .wdg file of just over 4 Mb and this confirmed it was a very small partial upgrade. So I then downloaded 2.00.18 [just like you suggest] to get myself a full upgrade [I hope]. What was interesting is that when you download 2.00.18.wdg WD site insists on re-naming it as 2.00.19.wdg. It is about 46 Mb but has the same file name as the 4 MB one !! What I think WD are doing is combining 2.00.18 and 2.0019 into one pkge and that is why they rename it, because if you install it you will effectively get a full upgrade to version 2.00.19. But it is confusing - have two files to choose from, quite different, but with the same file name.
I was then wondering how I can trick my MyBook into accepting this firmware when it thinks it is already at 2.00.19. However then I saw your post which mentioned a MANUAL upgrade. Yes - that what I need - I thought - and now I found the link and am about to study the procedure. Thanks.
Again I'm going to ask,
I have just had to rebuild my single drive system and am therefore back at 1.00.18
So, apart from losing GCC and NFS, what other differences are there between these two software versions that wou;d convince me to upgrade to 2.00.19?
Tim.
You are so lucky to have only single drive system. Thats really easy to revive when you havent software raid to recreate. I have MBWII 2TB with two hdd's and I was total idiot to install firmware 02.00.19. Now I am stuck with factory defaults and couldnt even activate ssh. Thats realy s*cks…
I tried following sites:
http://192.168.1.249/auth/firmware_upgrade.pl?fwserver=highlevelbits.free.fr/download/MBWE/MBWE-SSH-ENABLE
http://192.168.1.249/auth/firmware_upgrade.pl?fwserver=martin.hinner.info/mybook/firmware.php
http://192.168.1.249/auth/firmware_upgrade.pl?fwserver=mybook1.110mb.com/firmware.php
http://192.168.1.123/auth/firmware_upgrade.pl?fwserver=www.geekoh.com/mybook/telnet
which is everytime followed by "There is no new firmware available" response from WD.
It seems that in this firmware, WD added some check to recognise if you are uploading real firmware or some other stuff..
What I should do?
try telnet?
http://mybookworld.wikidot.com/telnet
or edit the /etc/inetd.conf directly
Thanks for response, but telnet also returned same result "There is no new firmware available".
Hopefully I make some progress, but now I am almost stuck. I wondered why is it returning "no firmware" statement and I set harddisks to raid1 (mirror) (so hopefully data on both are same (including firmware)), and connected one to computer using r-studio for reading partitions.
At first, i didnt find folder named "auth" or file named "firmware_upgrade.pl" on any Ext3fs partition (it seems, that these file is somehow created or extracted when mybook starting), so I opened SWAP partition for at lest ANSI reading and found some file called firmware_upgrade.pm and firmware_progress.pm (second one is less interesting, but could be good to know what is happening after download). First file seems to handle all the way to download new firmware.
firmware_upgrade.pm
firmware_progress.pm
My questions are:
1. Why is there no folder "auth" or file "firmware_upgrade.pl"? (are they created when mybook starts?)
2. How must I change firmware.php and latestfw.sh to get working "ssh enable" again? (I will probably figure it out, but in a very long time without help of skilled Pearl programmer (for "firmware_upgrade.pm") and experienced MyBook users).
I think that there will be more users with this problem later, when they upgrade to 02.00.19 and I would like to help
to solve this issue.
Thanks in advance to everyone..
Update:
Script in "firmware_upgrade.pm" automaticaly add "/list.asp" at the end of fwserver parametr. That is probably first problem.
For example:
you call http://192.168.1.249/auth/firmware_upgrade.pl?fwserver=martin.hinner.info/mybook/firmware.php
and stript trying to call http://192.168.1.249/auth/firmware_upgrade.pl?fwserver=martin.hinner.info/mybook/firmware.php/list.asp
Update2:
Also is there a script to check a version of firmware:
sudo("$nbin/wget.sh /var/upgrade/fwv.tmp http://${fws}?type=${sys_type}+fw=${fwVersion}");
this is just a part, whole script is much longer, begin on row 109 and ends on 160 in firmware_upgrade.pm file.
// nevermind, there is probably no need to deal with update2, but update1 is still problem.. just rewriting firmware.php is not working
allright.. I found http://mybookworld.wikidot.com/forum/t-19138/ and it seems, that there is not so much changes.. there are few actually, but it shouldnt affect firmware upgrade process..
so my question is still:
why cant I enable ssh?
And the answer was simple.. thanks to reply of one user on this forum, I realised that I didnt set gateway and dns.. so MyBook cannot connect anywhere for firmware. Now ssh working great..
so.. SOLVED :)
Hi,
I have successfully updated my 500Gb blue ring as described here to 02.00.18. Lucky one :)
When I logged to MyBook through web-interface, it said that a new firmware is available. And I updated to 02.00.19.
Has somebody tested 02.00.19 as well? As I understood, after firmware update I've lost all my modifications - is it true? But MyBook spins down the HDD - is this a new feature of 02.00.19?
Why would you do the update if you do not know what the new features are? As far as I know the my book was supposed to spin down all along, but alot of the time ipkg sofware will keep that from happening due to logs or what ever.
Personally, I don't see a reason to upgrade but that is just me.
I did not have any special reasons to upgrade from 01.00.18 to 02.00.19 was. But just decided to try. Original problem was in fact that I can't connect to this MyBook from WD TV Live mediaplayer . And it was just my curiosity - can I connect with a latest firmware? Seems that answer is - not.
And also seems that MyBook does a spin down now with 02.00.19
Your issue has nothing to do with a firmware update, instead you need to look into how you have samba setup. It sounds like the NAS is not announcing its shares to the network. i would suggest updating to samba 3.2 (it is in ipkg) as I was never able to get the default working right. From there take a hop onto the samba site and read up on setting a samba server up and editing your smb.conf file.
Once you have done this you should be able to configure samba to do what ever you need. Here is a copy of my smb.conf but bare in mind you also have to have users/groups setup to use it and the shares would need to be in the same place (My Mybook is highly customized so don't expect to be able to drag and drop the file and it work).
Awww come on boon where is your sense of adventure?….going out on the internets downloading new firmware, meeting new source code. :D
and I agree that the mybook has supported spindown all along.
I eat syntax like you for breakfast on my way to fight real errors.

Don't get me wrong Silver Knight, I love source but I also take calculated risks ;)
Unless you know what you are doing you can really hose your devices and it is not like you can just plug a monitor into it. Now I'm not saying no one should do it, but if you are asking ?'s like the previous person… It kinda points to potential disaster, not to mention wasted time reconfiguring everything for some improvement that you hope exists.
