Okay here's what I've got: Buyed a MyBook WE with single 1 TB drive. Got it delivered on saturday, out-of-package firmware rev. 02.00.15. Upgraded to 02.00.18 and enabled SSH. after a few tries I bricked my system, no SSH, disabled Webinterface. Stupid - I know.
Anyway done the "Rescue procedure" and everything seems to be going very well. Installed smart_spindown, ushare, mt-daapd, etc. Still works fine. Rebooted the device, wrote some files through Samba on it, etc. pp. no problem at all. After a while I got the strange read-only mount. Didn't knew what went wrong, so I decided to make another Rescue.
Now everyting works fine again, exept for the drive. I've not even copied files through Samba, neither created any shared folders. Just unmounted /dev/sda4 and wanted to run a fsck. Here is what I got:
# fsck.ext3 /dev/sda4 # The filesystem size (according to the superblock) is 243175905 blocks # The physical size of the device is 121081905 blocks # Either the superblock or the partition table is likely to be corrupt! # Abort<y>?
WTF is going on here? The drive is labeled with 1 TB, no damages, nothing else. Everything seems to be fine, even S.M.A.R.T (used via smartctl) tells me the drive is okay. Fine, so I tried to reformat the /dev/sda4 partition.
# mkfs.ext3 -m 0 /dev/sda4 # Block size=4096 (log=2) # Fragment size=4096 (log=2) # 60555264 inodes, 121081905 blocks # 0 blocks (0.00%) reserved for the super user # First data block=0 # 3696 block groups # 32768 blocks per group, 32768 fragments per group # 16384 inodes per group
Wait: Only half of the blocks are getting formatted so whats up with the rest of the blocks till block 243175905? Is my physical drive smaller than labeled and recognized by cfdisk during the Rescue procedure? How can that be? Now I've only got 500 GB of space, the drive seems to be working and no I/O errors and/or read-only filesystems anymore.
# df # Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on # rootfs 2.8G 188M 2.5G 7% / # /dev/root 2.8G 188M 2.5G 7% / # /dev/md3 950M 151M 751M 17% /var # /dev/sda4 455G 129M 455G 1% /shares/internal
I've opened the MyBook case, there are some traces of opening-attemps on the top case, so I think my warranty is gone isn't it?! Anybody got an advise for me? Or is it just a problem with the RAID-config of my MyBook? I mean I have a Linux-Filesystem-RAID. But wasn't it meant to be still 1 TB of size?
For now I'm lost:
I've got a smaller drive than I've payed for, no warranty and absolutly no tendency to pay another 100 Bucks for a new 1 TB drive. I even havn't found the drive in stores or onlineshops. Drive is named "WD10EAVS".
Anybody who has a plan or could help me, please? -Thanks in advance.
